Good Thursday everyone. Old Man Winter is alive and kicking and looks to bring the threat for accumulating snows to much of the region late Friday into early Saturday. This is all ahead of an arctic front that will usher a very cold weekend into town. That’s my kind of weekend.
Today looks to be a fairly quiet day with temps into the upper 30s and lower 40s under a partly sunny sky.
The action picks up on Friday as clouds quickly increase from the southwest early in the day. Moisture will be surging in during this time as our temps make a run toward 40. A mixture of rain and snow will break out, but the atmospheric profile suggests a rapid drop in temps as the precipitation begins. This means a quick change to snow as temps drop to near freezing by late afternoon and early evening. Snow would then continue into the overnight Friday as our arctic front surges in.
Notice a good amount of precipitation showing up on the GFS…
This is actually pretty close to blowing up a major storm along the east coast and is something to keep an eye on. Snowfall from that particular run of the GFS looks like this…
The NAM looks very similar…
This is a setup that can easily drop a few inches of snow for much of the region. The question is… will it work out? I smell a first call for snowfall map later today. 😉
Snow showers and flurries should continue into Saturday as gusty northwesterly winds blow. Temps may not get out of the low and mid 20s for some areas and will fall into the teens by evening. Sunday morning lows may dip toward 10 degrees if we can put some snow on the ground.
Overall… this is a wintry weekend ahead of us.
The fun may not stop there, as the pattern for early next week features a low pressure working west to east to our south. This happens with cold air across the northern half of the country and that may put us in line for a wintry mix of weather Monday night through Wednesday. You can see this clearly on the Canadian Model…
Snow, Ice, Rain or a combo of the three? We have several days to watch it. Let’s take ’em one at a time and focus on the late Friday and Saturday system. I will have another update and first call map out later today, so check back.
Have a great Thursday and take care.
Please let this storm leave us snow in Versailles. A few inches or more would be great! Maybe we can slowly build up to Rolo’s “old school” snow later this month.
if ur keeping track cuple thread back i told u a BIG STORM would hit and it be a suprise, well ook at the weekend system i t went from a wimper to few inches in 24 hours folkls. dont let your guard down as this is going blow up a storm just to out east and could wrap around a good one. as CB says STAY TUNED!!!!!
Hope you’re right!
Hope you are wrong. I’m ready for the 80’s and thunderstorms.
Make it 70s and severe thunderstorms and we’ve got a deal.
You got a deal!
Now this is what the blog should sound like this time of year…..although I had accepted spring gladly with the coming of softball season, being a true snow lover, this has me pumped even if it is only an ankle biter…..Rolo, I’m hoping you’re right 🙂
Yay Yay Yay Yay Yay Thanks for the hard work Chris! Let’s go snow….and rolo I am hanging in there with you…ready for the kiddos to see a real old school snow like the ones I grew up with in the ’70’s.
Looks like the Lou. Metro area will miss out once again. Hopefully not to bad as we will be traveling to NKY for B-Ball game Friday evening. I least we have a little heads up. As rolo said this may be an over acheiver, but not what he is looking for. Fri/Sat system may just plant the seed for bigger storm down the road. Still feel rain for the next system, but what is behind that one???
THINK SNOW!! Have a great day and thanks CB
I sure hope we get some here in southern ky. We missed out yesterday n othing but rain. Trying to get snow to fall down here is almost like watching a gnat try to swallow an elephant!
Continue to remember my mom she’s still in I.C.U. In serious condition! Thanks gang!
Praying for her this morning Tim.
Hope she is better soon!
Praying man. I hope she gets better.
Praying for your mom!
Thoughts and Prayers are with you and your family….
Praying for her…
How cruel!
First both students and teachers were taunted with falling snow while going to school and now perhaps enough snow to cancel school- IF on Thursday.
Tis’ the winter of discontent! My tractor mower is coming back from repair. Will need it soon to battle the chia grass.
COMPLETELY missing Warren County 🙁
Local mets are only giving two-tenths of an inch for me 🙁 I’m ready for some continued Spring.
Bring on spring!
Please let there be snow for Jefferson Co…..this first map looks to be ignoring us totally….
I’m from north-central TN…and wanted to know if any snow that fell yesterday remained or if it all melted away? I’ll be making a trip up to Lexington tomorrow night or Saturday morning. For better snow depth, obviously if a new batch fell on top of whatever fell yesterday, that’d be ideal.
All gone
Of course, I would have to be in Knoxville for the snow.
And we’ll be in Chicago… I told everyone a couple of weeks ago that it would snow when we were gone, sigh.
I guess that is how it goes, maybe I will see a little bit of snow.
Jackson mentioned in their latest discussions about a possible winter weather advisory starting Friday evening.
Waiting for CB First call for snow map….\
But my call is 3in for CKY (lex, richmond) …Rolo, I’m routing for your call suprise storm though!!!!
Patiently waiting for an update, appears the bulk of this may miss me to the south. I don’t want to be selfish and hope it shifts north, so I guess I’ll hope it is more wide spread than the current model runs show.
Northern/Southern jet streams to phase & blow up an all out Snowstorm!!
All Met’s caught with their pants down, just like ’98!
A couple comments…
To me, a “Few” means ‘3’. Chris, how do you quantify that term? 🙂
Also at least one other Meteorologist had noted the models are trending wetter for Friday night/Saturday morning. I note this as well.
who’s that?
This storm for Friday night and Saturday morning keeps getting more interesting…little more phasing involved potentially
On a side not if anyone saw the 12z KING(EURO) it had a real nice hit for a lot of Kentucky in the 13th-15th time frame with snow and potentially ice. That is the storm I have my eye on .
Yes indeed The euro is leading the trend colder and wetter with this storm. If ther euro is right regionwide a few inches maybe even some 4 and 5 inch totals for southern KY Monday night. quick hitting 6-12 hour snow. Still to close for comfort on rain/snow line. GFS has 1-2 inch snow which changes to rain south.
how about Eastren kentucky
Winter Weather advisory is out ! 🙂
Okay Chris….please please tell me I will see snow this time!!!! Only had aa dusting all year…LOL…please send us some snow down here in the tropics!!!
