Good Friday afternoon everyone. The threat for severe storms is on the increase for parts of western and central Kentucky late this afternoon into the evening. A line of damaging wind and large hail producing thunderstorms is dropping southeastward toward the region and will blow through over the next several hours.
The Storm Prediction Center did a fabulous job during the hyper active severe spring we had across the country. They are struggling around here over the past few weeks and today finds those struggles continuing. After having us in a slight risk for severe storms for a couple of days now… they took us out of the risk area this morning. Then they stick out a discussion saying a watch will soon be issued all the way into central Kentucky near Lexington. A few minutes later… they stick out a watch that does not match what they said was coming. This is VERY frustrating to those of us who are the messengers to the public and I strongly suggest the SPC get everyone on the same page before sending information out.
Regardless… after the day of confusing… here is the SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH for parts of western Kentucky until 8pm EDT…
You will also see the warnings on that map as well.
This is the beginning of a very active weekend across the state as waves of thunderstorms impact the region. Severe storms will be possible through Sunday and torrential rainfall is likely for much of the state. This could lead to local high water concerns.
Track the storms here…
I will have updates as needed and will send out quick thoughts and warnings via twitter. Follow me: Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog.
Have a great Friday and take care.

Thanks Chris. Yes it was confusing. I was up at around 1 am when the new post email notification came through, so I read the new post saying that our area was in a slight risk and there the map was with us no even being close to being in a slight risk………Thanks for the explanation 🙂
This MCS is really looking good on RADAR, almost taking on derecho-like signature. Wind damage appears to be the main threat. Watch out Evansville and Owensboro.
Are these storms going to affect Bowling Green? If so, what time?
Chris I agree 100% with your take regarding the SPC – both during the Spring and now.
A cluster of storms is forming ahead of the main bow, just south of Loserville. Looks like we might get some rain at my house! Woo!
50 MPH winds in E-town…
I’m at the ichthus festival and they are evacuating everybody to their vehicles because of the approaching storm.
Dark and windy here in SW Lexington. I watered the flowers and veggies thinking we weren’t going to get a drop. Oh well. Glad I was wrong. We need the rain.
I lik ehow much of the Lex Metro missed out. Amazing how it just breaks up entering here.
Jake
I’m waiting for rain…I’m waiting…I’m waiting. Did someone say something about a line of strong storms coming through Lexington?
Loserville? C’mon give it a break already.
Ok, so maybe I am glad I watered after all…….oh well
I see the hype is still alive and well.
Harp on the SPC a little more.
What? I was being polite. 😉
its a good thing they changed Icthus to June to avoid all the spring storms. 😉
DOH!!! it broke up again!! my garden would like a drink! i guess i am going to have to do it myself….le sigh.
