Good Friday everyone and welcome to what is sure to be a very stormy weekend for much of the state. Rounds of showers and thunderstorms will come calling over the next few days and these will likely pack a hefty punch.
The setup for the next few days finds the heat ridge to our southwest bubbling northeastward toward the region. We will be on the cusp of the heat and clusters of showers and thunderstorms will become quite common around the outer edge of the hottest air. That will put us directly in the line of fire for strong and severe thunderstorms through Sunday. These repeat thunderstorms will also put down torrential rains leading to 1″-3″ totals for many across central and eastern Kentucky.
Here is a look at the setup…
Things should get started today with thunderstorms blowing up throughout the Ohio Valley. Damaging winds and large hail will be very likely with the strongest storms and the Storm Prediction Center has much of the region in the risk for severe storms…
Current Watches
We have you set up with the usual cast of radars to track the storms…
I will have updates as needed and will send out quick thoughts and warnings via twitter. Follow me: Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog.
Have a great Friday and take care.

Chris, finally got a minute to comment. This weeks weather has been pretty good overall. We could still use some more rain, and it looks ike we are going to get it. I do have one request….I would like for you to conjur up a beautiful day next Saturday, as my daughter is getting married. So I am puttin in my order early! 😉 Have a great Friday, everyone!
I don’t see our area covered in the slight risk at all. The NWS only has a 40 percent chance of storms. You would think it was be higher based on their discussion. I guess we will see what happens.
Local mets aren’t talking up the rain chances as much as you are, Chris. But as always, I trust your thoughts above all others! I could use a few more soakers at my place.
UGH!! All the big clusters od rain are well to the west again.
I don’t see anything on the graphics where the storm prediction center has put us under “anything”?? I checked the NOAA site and didn’t see anything either. What’s that about?
About .45in of rain in Frankfort area for the past 3 weeks! DRY, we need that rain Chris.
Do you guys think anything will pop up this afternoon..? Or will we be waiting on that cluster back toward Illinois. Looks like it will be a while before that gets here unless it speeds up.
IDK that much about it, but I think we are looking at a situation where storms will start to develop or could develop just about anywhere as it warms and becomes more unstable, the other day, we had a tornado warning (Morehead) from a line of storms that had developed earlier. I still can’t figure out why Chris said the storm prediction center has us under a risk for strong/severe but there’s nothing indicating that
I’d like to have “torrential” rain of 1 to 3 inches right now. 🙂
Didn’t I tell you it was hard to squeeze rain out in Summer? The models have painted INCHES of rain here for two weeks now. What have we gotten? .5″ for some folks. And there really isn’t a good signal for stuff today either. That MCV in IL is tiny, and here we’ve got subsidence keeping skies clear.
Well looks like another day of dragging the garden hose around! I was sure hoping I wouldn’t have to. But oh well maybe tomorrow.
Will this line of storms to the west of Central KY take a right turn, the front is a NW to South east alignment. Hope this will give atleast some rain for CKY??
