Good Morning everyone. A TORNADO WATCH is now out for much of western and central Kentucky until 1pm. Tornadoes, damaging winds and large hail are possible in and close to the watch area.
Here’s a look at the watch outline and the current warnings…
Regional radar is lighting up…
I will have more updates as needed and will be sending out rapid fire thoughts and warnings via twitter. Help us out by posting the weather conditions from where you live. Take care.
Violent lightning in Lex. C’mon home, Mr. B.
Wasn’t “C’mon home” this a WKYT slogan at some point in the past?
Seems the stuff moved in quicker than expected, unless during the day also includes 3:30 am. Maybe it is.
Do you all think that Eastern Kentucky will also be placed under a tornado watch? I’m hoping that the storms will dissipate as they head east, but I know absolutely nothing about weather.
I actually think this line will intensify more as it progresses into CKY. Watch out for isolated tornadoes and damaging winds.
Is the line moving through Western KY right now the back edge? Or will there be more storms develop behind it?
KYT announced that T.G. is retireing on Friday. Hope they are announcing Chris Bailey as his replacement. T.G. is too young to retire, but if you can at his age, why not? Everybody, keep an eye to the sky. Gonna be a wild ride. Lots of heavy rain hit Georgetown about 3:30 this morning. Chris, you rock. Be safe everybody.
This line of storms moving through western KY as of 7:45EST has verified tornadoes with it, so we must watch it closely. But, I do think it will likely fall apart as it reaches central KY.
The third wave of storms this afternoon has potential to tear up a lot of stuff so it’ll be the one to watch. Stay near a NOAA radio today, and know your plan in case it hits your area.
What time, WX, for round this afternoon?
So far, round #2 is holding together nicely and is continuing to prompt tornado warnings. Bullitt Co. is currently hearing sirens. Like I said, we must watch this closely.
If round #3 develops, we’re talking lunchtime today.
dont llok like it falling apart yet as IT BLISTERING FAST MOVING, hope it does WXMAN as it has some serious indy storms in it.
Idont get worried alot bout SEVERE STORMS in this part of state SE/E but kinda worried bit bout today. be safe all and join KEAVYMAN chat/chaser room today.
Needless to say, even strong straight line winds are destructive enough. As if eastern ky didn’t have enough power failures during the snowstorm.
People in mobile homes need to be especially on guard.
True that eastern ky has had far fewer twisters than rest of the state. This is more to do with rising elevations and rough terrain of eastern ky making tornado genesis difficult.
When twisters do happen in rough terrain, the terrain has little effect. I’ve posted this before but note the graphic of tornado path up and down the Ozark ridges:
http://www.theweatherprediction.com/weatherpapers/103/index.html
While the Ozarks mountains have shoulder drop heights nearly comparable to Black Mountain in ky, the Ozark ridges and valleys are relatively low above sea level, so tornadic storms have more chance to retain high dewpoints and other factors needed for twisters. Also helps Oklahoma is next door to Ozarks, Oklahoma being perhaps closest thing to perfect tornado breading ground on Earth.
there not be much after this line moves thru, MAYBE IN EASTERN KY,
the line u see west is the MAIN EVENT.
If Chris Bailey is not T.G.’s replacement….Im gonna protest!!!…lol
OKay, totally unbelievable or actually maybe that it IS believable makes it worse? Watching TWC not five minutes ago. They say, “We’re currently tracking tornadoes across Kentucky. But first, let’s go to the seven day forecast!” So, they spend five minutes on the seven day then go to a commerical after they’ve just confirmed that they’re tracking tornadoes on the ground. Unfortunately there are still a lot of people that only have satellite in rural Kentucky that still count on TWC for life-saving weather.
How the mighty have fallen.
/rant off
I only have satellite. I come here to you for weather Chris.
I would like to thank the National Weather Service for the 5:30am wake up call.
Is there a way to disable certain alerts on a weather radio? I don’t want to turn the whole thing off in case a “warning” is issued and a tornado or severe storm is bearing down on me, but I could care less if a “watch” is issued, especially at 5:30 in the morning.
Report of funnel cloud forming near Windy Ridge in Grayson county
starting to train out on southern end as northrn part weakens. going sret up flooding rais SW
As expected, this line is weakening some as it heads into central KY.
Out west, Tornado Warnings are still ongoing. Remember, another round is possible later today. Stay safe everyone.
TG leaving, hmmmmm.
they kept it QUIET, agree if they dont bring the LEGEND BACK! there be hell to pay..
but does CB want to come back?? uhh DUHHHHHHHH
Unconfirmed brief tornado touchdown in Grayson county
sad to say look like TODD BORAK will take over, just called a friend and he was mum pretty much, but i get impression WKYT never even thought bout bring our MAN BACK HOME. this is either a sad thing or there playing it close to the vest till they can get things lined out.
When Chris filled in for TG when he was so sick and in the hospital, the WKYT manager said the station was flooded with calls and emails from people who were so happy to see Chris. They had to know he was the only choice. Todd was on this morning and will be on at noon and so it makes little sense to tell viewers to tune at 11 p.m. to “meet TG’s replacement”.
It’s gotta be Chris or else I’m truly bummed!!!
hold my horses, ANNOUNCMENT on 11 clock news tonite as to who will take over at WKYT.
Line just now moving into east Lexington. Dark, rainy and lots of lightning and thunder.
Not sure if CB would tell us to “watch” tonight at 11 PM if there was not a good reason why…….hmmmmmmm
Marie, that’s what I’m thinking (hoping) too. Why would Chris want us to tune in unless it was somebody we all know and LOVE???
Yes, I am obsessed with the thought that Chris might return!! 🙂
The spc has most of tn and parts of south central ky within a 15% tornado probability range. Tornado warnings in Ft Campbell area.
Even though the storms aren’t close to Nashville yet, the clouds still look unsettling and they are racing by with these winds.
lots of wind andrain in georgetown at elkhorn meadows. Looks as if sunshine trying to break out toward the college. Really dark little scout clouds at the bottom of that somewhat sunshine
its LIKE UK WINNING A NATIONAL TITLE FEELING. my peeps say im crazy, but CHRIS THE LEGEND BAILEY COMING BACK HOME IS AWESOME BABY!!!
as far as storm goes, training now out west sw so we futher east ok for now, be serious flooding reports as well from that way.
I think it’s a good possibility that it could be Chris. Why else would he tell us to watch?! Got my fingers crossed!!
For those of you that have been around here for quite some time, I remember him dropping some hints to this return here and there it seems within the last year……I’m not sure if I was reading into things too much or if he really is heading back West but I’ll say that I’ll follow his forecast no matter what channel he is on. This will be a huge loss for WSAZ but they have slowly introduced Brandon Butcher as of lately and this seems to be unfolding as I had expected. No matter where the legend goes, he has my support, and if Lexington is where his heart is I hope he gets back to where he belongs!
Storms training across Grayson and bordering counties. Watch out for flooding. Golf ball size hail in Grayson county. Stay safe!
Is it me or do the storms south and east of Owensboro seem to be lifting northward and the storms seem to be in line for east KY instead of far southern ky? Is this expected?
Tornado on the ground on Hodgenville rd in Larue county, 6 miles se of E’town
Damage already being reported….
Unconfirmed report of possible trapped people in destroyed building….Still, no confirmed reports of injuries yet in Larue county.
I am pretty sure that Chris is T.G.’s replacement. On the WSAZ website, they have already taken down Chris picture & biography. I wouldn’t think they would do that unless he has taken another job. I will miss him on WSAZ but I get WKYT on cable so I will still be able to watch him. And I hope he keeps up this site because it is the best weather site in Kentucky!
Good luck to both T.G & Chris!
Looking at the satellite, it looks like there will be some clearing after this first line blows through…is this true? Will the sun create more instability for later this evening?
Sun’s peeking out in Somerset. Not a good thing at all.
yep, here in Barbourville as well, and its HUMID!
hope our weatherfriend Jeanette (E-town) is safe…TWC reporting serious Tornado damage in that area…
kentuckyweather RT @TWCBreaking: Law enforcement reporting significant damage in southeastern Elizabethtown, KY. Map: wxch.nl/zVDnye7 minutes ago · reply · retweet
YIKES, hope she’s ok! I cannot see EKY clearing out as much as southern and central today since the storms are training in on us so I’m thinking it will make storms weaken significantly when they approach our small region.
For those interested, here is the live feed for police/emergency radio in Hardin County. It definitely sounds like some bad damage down there:
http://www.radioreference.com/apps/audio/?feedId=10781
My sister-in-law says there is tornado damage in her area of Hardin County. She works at a school there and they’ve been in the hallways for an hour.
Listening to the scanner feed (I tried to post it but it is stuck in moderation) there is significant damage at “Pine Tree” Mobile home park and areas around Hodgenville Road.
A trucking company, mobile home park and the area around Dow Corning in the SE portions of E-Town have significant damage reported, but everyone is accounted for and no serious injuries being reported as of a report just 3 min’s ago from Hardin County dispatch.Thank God! 🙂
Storms will continue to fire and look to be moving in the same general direction.
We just had a heckuva rainstorm here in Bardstown, wind is starting to pick up right now, first time all morning. Be safe every one of my blogging buddies! 🙂
WHAS in Louisville now has live streaming video of damage in Etown KY.
It’s dark and rainy here in S/SW Lexington…see how this one will play out.
where did Chris say to tune in at 11
Before we get to the tracking tools. I want to wish all the best to my good friend and WKYT Chief Meteorologist TG Shuck. TG announced he is resigning from WKYT to spend more time with family and Friday will be his last day on air. TG is a great guy and will succeed in whatever he decides to do next. Make sure to send him an email, tweet or Facebook message to let him know you appreciate his years of service. WKYT plans to announce his successor coming up on 27 Newsfirst at 11. Watch
it better be C.B. or im planning an OCCUPY WKYT !!!….LOL…LOL…
yep its a shame, i cant get straight answert, some say BAILEY happy were he at, NO CRAP but this is home. were he comes watch BALLGAMES can raiswe his family and not NEVER WORRY BOUT having to move again till he retires.
i understand they have contacted BAILEY, this per intern i talk to.
well as i posted 2 hours ago TRAINING was beginning and my worst fears are happening, feel for those areas out there. it A BAD SITUATION folks.
Yea, numerous flood warnings now starting to pop up like Breckinridge and Calloway Counties in ky
Dark and storming again in east Lexington, looks like the line from the west is training northeast which means we will get more of the action.
knox county schools dismissing at 12:30 pm due to inpending severe weather
Barbourville City will dismiss at 1pm…!
What’s the thought behind that? Let’s send the kids out of a sturdy school building and let them go home home to their mobile trailers!
Video out of the area looks like at least EF-3 damage…
Since Tango Golf Sierra is leaving WKYT, is there any chance Charlie Bravo is coming back?
BTW, TG rocks, but understand the need to focus on the family more.
WOW, areas in the west/central part of the state getting hammered. I understand that its devastation near E-town and in Hardin County. This is horrible. Hoping to hear from Jeanette soon on here.
Not heard anything like this. Hopefully, the bark from impressions is worse than the bite.
Another tornado warning for Hodgenville area.
Lots of sightseers driving around…That’s dangerous, impeding emergency access and more storms moving back in, not a good combination..Stay out of the way!!
fr u posters that are saying what bout next line, THERE IS NO NEXT LINE what u see is the STORM, now as it moves into easten ky more RAIN will spread out IMO and that be the biggest threat in the areas is FLOODING.
Sadly, media reporting 10 fatalities in Illinois. There were a couple of deaths in Missouri earlier. Please stay safe everyone.
Anyone on the Lake Herrington area have any reports? My home is there in Burgin on the lake, and I am hearing reports of bad radar indication of Tornado. Any updates are appreciated from those of you who I know lives there. I am 30 minutes away. Thanks!
By the way, hope to CB here in Central Ky again! Especially if that is what he wants. Winds starting to crank up here in Lincoln Co.
i looked at a map, and it looked like southern ky is in a moderate risk for severe storms. looks to be a bad afternoon. i got my vx-5r charging up, battery isnt very good on it . i need to order a new battery.
everyone stay safe out there today. its gonna be a nasty day.
all my comments today are on my site. No time to double post, sorry.
They just extended the Tornado Watch till 8:00PM tonight for Central, Southern and Southeastern, KY. I live in Lex but work in Frankfort. It appears to have moved through here in Frankfort although the temps have not dropped which would indicate that the front has not yet moved through and more storms could still develop…especially with clearing and heating of the day would increase the potential for more severe weather. That is my opinion. Time will tell!
From the NWS 12:37 Forecast Discussion:
Additional convection may fire along the actual frontal
interface which is still west of the region. Areas of southern
Indiana and portions of north-central KY north of the current
convection are not out of the woods just yet as this area still
remains in the warm sector. However, drier air will quickly push in
from the northwest this afternoon…effectively ending the
thunderstorm threat. From west to east.
Why are the radars always 45 minutes behind. Can’t get real time updates to check storms that may be intensifying before they hit my home city.
Some big storms firing up west of nashville tn now.
Still tornadic storms between ashland and pikeville ky, an area not all that use to tornadic weather. It will be interesting to see if nws jackson ky and nws charleston wv do any storm surveys in that area. Please continue to stay safe everyone.
I know that there will be a Tornado in Barborville if it’s not already happened.
