Good late Friday morning. The first TORNADO WATCH of the day is now out for the western part of Kentucky and it’s a PDS Tornado Watch. That stands for particularly Dangerous Situation and is a designation that doesn’t come lightly.
Here is a look at the watch and the latest warnings…
This setup can produce large and violent tornadoes across the watch area and I fully expect the entire state to be placed under new watches later today.
I cannot stress enough how dangerous this situation really is. Widespread damaging winds, numerous tornadoes and very large hail are all likely across our region today into this evening. You need to have a plan of action ready to be implemented at a moments notice.
The SPC continues to have much of Kentucky in a high risk for severe storms and that is VERY rare.
Current Risk
I will have more updates as needed and will continue to send out rapid updates via twitter. Stay safe and take care.
Here we go 🙁
Cancelling Softball practice today…although I still think having the kids at a brick and stone school is better than sending them home to stick built houses….
I have a really bad feeling about today. We dont see very many Tornados here in Eastern Ky. But when we do its always bad. To many trailers
Storm area of basement ready with supplies. Ready at a moment notice.
Wow..Just seen a picture of Hail on the highway somewhere in virginia..Gate city i believe..Looked like 3 inches of snow..Amazing..
Does it look like SE Ky will be dodging this one?!?
London KY area has always been a tornado alley in KY. So my guess is no place in Ky is safe today.
If I were in London, I would be in the basement already. Tornado magnet.
I wouldn’t count anyone out at the moment..You never know when or where a strong cell may pop up..Especially through out the day..Right now flooding is a concern..Its has been pouring the rain in parts of knott co..
Man i hope we can dodge this one, i live in morgan co and we got hit hard wensday, id rather be talkin snow anyday over this weather, the severe weather lovers can have my part of this lol.
For the more experienced weather folk, how’s it looking for SE KY..Particularly Manchester???? Tornados are rare here, but I don’t recall a time when the weather situation was deemed this serious either, so I guess I answered my own questiion, anything is possible. But, if anyone has more they’d like to add, I’d sure appreciate it!! Thank you!
London/Corbin/Somerset areas were devastated in 1974. North Corbin was hit, then that tornado came rather close to Manchester before lifting. So Manchester is not out of woods. Heck, who knows, perhaps every 200 years or so a tornado goes over KY’s Black Mountain
One hundred plus years of weather history shows southeastern ky has had very few twisters as rising elevations and terrain that’s rugged and irregular limits tornado genesis somewhat. But not the same as saying mountains block actual twisters, no way, Arkansas’s Ozarks have lots of twisters, mountains have little effect on existing tornadoes (note graphic of twister going up and down ridges)

Barometric pressure in Richmond at 29.61″ and steady at the moment. Overcast skies with a departing moderate rain shower. Radar to the west is clear–clouds may break to add more instability to the air. Very volatile situation. Everyone stay safe today.
Schools letting out early all over central Kentucky, including Fayette County.
Heard them testing the warning sirens in Boyd County a few minutes ago guess the whole state needs to be on the look out
Jim Cantore on top of Jewish Hospital parking garage in Louisville. Not sure if I make that out as a good thing or bad thing.
Be careful everyone. Going to get a little crazy around here later this afternoon.
Dewpoints in the 60’s in Lou.
I think its never a good sign if Jim Cantore comes to your town to cover the weather.
Good for Louisville. Cantore is always about 60 miles from the real action.
Temp 76 in Paducah, fuel for the fire?
Tornadic storm approaching Middlesboro, look out!
I don’t EVER remember being the focus of an outbreak like this. I live in a house, but I do not have a basement. I keep asking myself which room is the best, the small bathroom in the middle of the house or the laundry room close the the garage, both small rooms. I really really can NOT wait for this day to be over. I’m sure the chasers are just loving this, which is fine; I understand the beauty and power of mother nature, but that doesn’t make me any less creeped out at this point.
100% agree. I will be exhausted at the end of this day due to worry.
Financial center parking garage basement. Right across the street from my office. Three stories underground.
Sounds like my setup Mark. I think the general advice is to go with the middle of the house- i.e. the room with the most walls between the outdoors.
Bathroom in middle of house.
Can someone tell me what Chris said about London on Twitter. I missed it and I don’t do Twitter. Are we at high risk or something?
Model parameters are off the charts. This is going to get bad. I think it’s not a question of will some folks lose their homes today…it’s who.
What are your thoughts about southern Ky from Bowling Green to London? I”m thinking this could be a particularly dangerous area late afternoon or evening
