Good Friday everyone and welcome to another stormy pattern. Just like our last stormy setup… this one will have the potential to produce some severe weather to go along with heavy rains. This will lead us into another very ugly pattern for next week and one that will be a total opposite to the one we are just wrapping up.
Showers and thunderstorms will be on the increase across the region today as a slow moving low pressure approaches from the west. Some of these storms may be strong or severe with damaging winds and large hail the main threats. Here is the area the Storm Prediction Center is watching today…
These storms will contain very heavy rains and this can lead to local high water issues today. Follow the showers and storms across the state…
Showers and storms will carry us into the weekend. Saturday may end up being the stormiest of the bunch as the rain and boomers look to be fairly widespread. Just like today… heavy rains and a few severe storms will be possible. Highs will be in the 70s.
Sunday will see low pressure working over us with more showers and some early day thunder. Winds will be rather gusty as temps begin to take a tumble. Highs will be in the 60s.
Next week looks nothing short of ugly! A series of cut off upper level lows are forecast to rotate across the Ohio Valley. That shows up very well on the 500mb maps from the European Model…
From a weather geek standpoint… that is actually a cool thing to see on a map. It is not so cool to deal with as it means a damp and chilly pattern for much of the region. Check out the temp departures from the GFS Ensembles…
Again… that is just flat out ugly! The chilly pattern looks to hang tough for much of next week before finally going the other way by next weekend and beyond. I am seeing signs of a prolonged stretch of normal to just above normal air for the last half of the month.
I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great Friday and take care.

Hey Chris!
I was thinking……..Remember in 1997 how WET that year was and was very similar in that even up to MID June it was very chilly. I think in June some nights were even in the 40s if I remember correctly and during the day (if overcast) it would be in the 50s at times. There was a TON of rain that year as well. I had just moved to Lexington in late 1996 so that was my first spring/summer here and I remembered thinking, “is this what summers are like here?” That year it took FOREVER for summer to finally kick in.
Though not exact of this year, I have to say that the following year (Feb 1998) we had that crazy blizzard. I know that was an ODD storm but who knows. Just an interesting thought I had since their could be something to the pattern. Sorry to ramble

Keeps getting moderated. Their=there (lol)
good site and good spot i like very very much.
Apple cell phone calls it digicam! terrible high quality (you can find several sample photographs on the internet), absolutely no video, absolutely no flash.
Whereas SPC basically sucked out loud last year, this year they are doing a great job. They have pretty much nailed the convective outlook areas perfectly.
Had about 3 drops of rain and a couple rumbles of thunder in Knox this morning about an hr or so ago
So this morning I typed two long paragraphs. Moderated the first time. But I had cut and pasted just in case. Tried again. Moderated two more times….This was six hours ago.
I have to agree, SPC has really been on the ball this year.
On a seperate note, why didn’t JKL issue a watch for the counties in Watch Box #297?
We did have some decent sustained wind for a while here at the house but no heavy rain no lightening no hail
Looks like it has made it up now. 🙂
Despite being Friday the 13th, which for some reason people have a problem with, remember that it’s also “Blame Someone Else Day”.
No really, look it up…
If it does not rain at my house today, instead of me blaming Chris, he can blame me for that.
Good post! Thank you
