A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is out for eastern Ky until 6am. Here is a look at the watch and current warnings…
The main discussion is below…
Good Wednesday to one and all. We are entering into a rather tropical feeling air mass across much of our region. This is one that will see very warm and humid air set up shop for several days. It will also lead to a daily threat for heavy rain producing strong storms. That is how it looks for the rest of the week with the weekend seeing our rain chances on the increase as our temps slowly decrease.
Overall… it is a pattern that can continue to lead to local flash flooding as any storm that goes up can put down a lot of water in a short amount of time.
Storms Tuesday evening proved to be major rain and severe weather producers for many areas of the eastern half of the state. Take a look at this flooding pic from Ashland…
Many areas experienced major flash flooding. Hail and damaging winds also accompanied these storms with up to baseball sized hail reported in a few counties. Don’t belive me? Check out this pic from the Nicholas County Baseball team…
That is amazing! I appreciate them being fans of the blog and sending us that pic.
Wind damage was also common with these cells.
Similar storms can develop at any point over the next several days and that will be our concern. Whatever is out there will show up here…
Away from any storm action… temps will soar well into the 80s and it will feel mid summer muggy. Western Kentucky will likely see 90 degrees out of all this.
A VERY slow moving low pressure will work in this weekend and we will see an increase in the coverage of the showers and thunderstorms. This should bring another round of heavy rains to much of the region. You can see this low here on the GFS for Saturday evening…
This storm will crawl across the region into early next week and there is a good chance it becomes almost stationary not too far from here. If that is the case… it may create more big high water headaches. Much cooler temps should filter in here by the end of the weekend into much of next week.
I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great Wednesday and take care.

Thanks Chris! You’ve certainly been a busy weather dude tonight! I appreciated all the tweets! Now get some sleep!
Thanks Chris! My friend in the morehead area had golf ball hail! The pics were something!
I was so hopeful when you said summer may be cooler and wet. Now it seems that maybe that was wrong. We may be wet, but temps this hot already? I don’t want another summer of highs in the upper 80’s+ everyday and with lows that don’t wanna go below 70 at night and the relentless humidity. All of those reasons are big factors as to why I moved from Florida.
Is the drought in the plains the reason why the heat is overiding the moist ground here?
Johnson County getting hammered and it looks like it will continue for quite a long time.
Wow what lighting I was sleeping so good when I was awoken with lighting that lit up the room heavy rain and thunder here. Thanks Chris and those who sent in the pics.
This is my thoughts exactly! I don’t mind the rain if it means the sunny days we have will be cool. But you are right……its not looking too promising with highs predicted at 90 here in Bowling Green today!
You moved from Florida thinking Kentucky wasn’t hot and humid during the summer? Someone gave you the wrong info. 🙂 Upper 80s is a cool summer in Kentucky.
Chris I was really hoping for some spring weather, but it looks like, instead, that we are going to bounce back and forth between ‘winter’ and summer. Ah well….thanks for the update. Looks like eastern KY took the brunt of last nights storms, for sure. We did not see a drop of rain here in Somerset.
Hey guys, I’m curious to know if there are any sites to see radar for the past day. Last night we had some pretty amazing storms but the power went out and I didn’t get to see them on radar so I’d love to look at them today….It got a little hairy in Johnson and there’s quite a bit of damage as well. Thanks in advance guys 🙂
That Speedway photo is ironic, because they have been putting my finances under water for the past few months.
In all seriousness, prayers go out to all those flooded in eastern KY.
Can somebody tell me Chris’s email address? I have a picture of what I believe to be be a huge funnel cloud in Ashland yesterday. I saw at lease 2 funnel clouds & was really suprised nothing touched down. I hope Chris shares this picture!
I think this is the correct email.

Yes. There is a way!
Here is a site: I haven’t completely figured out how to view the loop past 12 hours. You may have better luck than me. There’s also a radar archive on wunderground.com
