Good Sunday to one and all. Wow is the weather word of the weekend. That’s what a lot of people are saying about the conditions across our region right now. This is a very wild weather pattern we are in and we have actually been in it for a while now. Extreme has become the new normal and another extreme event is on tap as a snowstorm gets set to slam the Appalachian Mountains.
This snowstorm may bring a touch of snow to far eastern Kentucky tonight into early Monday. Here’s a crude map I put together of how this bad boy may play out just to our east…
Areas from West Virginia into Pennsylvania may get hammered with more than a foot of heavy, wet snow. The numbers from the new NAM actually had one area in West Virginia getting 33″ of snow. Wow! There could be a lot of destruction and power outs for those areas over the next several days.
Most of Kentucky will see a mix of sun and clouds today and Monday with a scattered shower or two possible. Temps will generally run in the 50s for highs. Winds are going to be a big player during this time with gusts of 30mph+ likely at times.
Much warmer air will fight in here late Tuesday into Wednesday and may spawn a stray shower. Readings may surge toward 80 by Wednesday afternoon and evening ahead of a strong cold front. That may set the state for strong or severe thunderstorms late Wednesday into early Thursday.
The front should settle just to our south late Thursday and early Friday with chilly air trying to work back in…
That front may then work back to the north and become stationary by next weekend…
That’s something for us to watch out for and could mean rounds of storms and heavy rain as the warm air tries to take control again.
Like I said… “wow” is the weather word of the weekend. Have a great Sunday and take care.
Chris, what in the wide, wide world of weather is a going on here? Sheesh! In the winter, would have loved to see sOmething like this, but not now. I hope the NAM is wrong on this one. Thanks for the update . Have a great Sunday, all. P. S. Chris, how about finding some warmer, drier weather for a couple of days?
ROAD TRIP!!?! …LOL..
I’m with ya. I would willingly skip school to see this historic snowstorm. If this plays out to forecast, a very large chunk of trees could be lost in those areas.
Eeek.. thanks Chris. I take ALL your forecasts seriously. Some outfits have been saying “a few inches” for days.. looks like Summersville is going to get slammed pretty hard.. SO glad I have all my tomato and pepper plants in the greenhouse. Need to get the bird-feeders filled and the heated bird bath running again, but am very worried for the baby birds being raised right now.. I am curious as to what area is likely to see 33 inches?
Help me out, weather wizards. My M-I-L is visiting from Fort Worth this week and I told her it was supposed to be near 80 by Th/Fri. Where has that warmth gone? It was in the forecast a few days ago! We will be at Keeneland and it’s always colder there so now I’m thinking she needs to pack a coat. Any ideas for later this week in terms of what a warm weather Texan should pack? Thanks!!!
I was hoping for 80 as well but its looking like low 60’s for highs as of now with a chance of rain on Thursday.
Perhaps your MIL recalls when Dallas/Ft Worth recorded snow in April 2007; that could prepare her for any scenario here. This was the scene at Waco in April 2007:

As CB touched on, models are hinting at some storms here by middle of week and then again next weekend, that should make your MIL feel right at home 😉
Thanks! I will ask her about that snow in 2007. TVG showed footage of the snow that blanketed Keeneland in April 2007. The horses were barely visible and kids were throwing snowballs at the other patrons.
DFW gets the worst of everything Mother Nature has to offer so the MIL is happy to get away from that place for a week. They’ve had some huge storms lately after last year’s unbelievable heat and drought. Maybe we can squeak out some decent weather here for her.
my road trip to crippling snow may just be to the other side of my county! that is one heck of a sharp cut off on the accumulation, it would not take much of an eastward shift to have me outside trying to save some trees in the yard! Not sure how I would do this, I guess a long broom and a stepladder would save the ornamentals.
NOAA extended temps maps have been showing above normal temps in their forecast, I think their having major model issues? I knew April would turn ugly after a very warm March!
see this before, nothing FOOLSIH abbout a NARROWstrip of heavy snow in april and that what it is a NARROW strip that will causwe trouble.
