Good Monday everyone. Let me start out today by saying… USA… USA… USA… USA!! From a weather standpoint… heavy rain will continue to pound much of the region and this will cause more flooding problems for the western half of the state. As the rain continues… the chilly temps will now join the party for a few days.

Showers and some thunderstorms will be likely today with the highest totals being across western Kentucky. This is a region ravaged by flooding and the new rain will cause more issues for the next several days. Farther east… today’s rains will be a bit more scattered.

Track the rain and storms on our radars…

Rainfall Since Midnight

Low pressure will be moving northeastward along our stalled out front and will increase the rain shield for the entire region tonight into Tuesday. Heavy rains will be a good bet during this time.

We should see one heck of a temp gradient from west to east across the state today. That may mean a 25-30 degree temp swing. You can see that well here on the NAM forecast for this afternoon…

Tuesday will be another chilly day and Wednesday is likely to keep the chill around for another day.

The weather for the end of the week into Kentucky Derby weekend looks unsettled… but milder. We will be in a northwesterly flow that will bring a couple of systems to try to rain on us again. The first will be later Thursday into Friday and should be rather moisture starved. A strong system dives in for Derby weekend with a round of showers and thunderstorms. The timing on this will have to be watched as it can impact Derby day. Hopefully we can hold that off until Sunday.

The temp pattern for the month of May does not look very good as a cooler than normal regime sets up shop. That doesn’t mean we won’t have some warm days… but the month as a whole looks below normal. Check out the Temp anomaly forecast from the GFS Ensembles…

The warmth will stage a fight for the middle and end of the month and that is likely to spell a renewed supercharged severe weather pattern.

I will update as needed. Have a great Monday and take care.
