Good Saturday everyone and welcome the the last day for the month of April. Mother nature is sending this month out on a very nice note after giving us some ugly weather for much of the past four weeks. Speaking of ugly… that’s how May looks to start off. Moral of the story… enjoy today.
Your friendly weather dude has been sick all week and dealing with all the severe weather and will be taking advantage of a quiet day. That said… I can still throw you guys a bone about what is coming up.
– Partly to mostly sunny skies will be with us today as temps return to the 70s.
– A cold front snakes into the region Sunday with showers and thunderstorms becoming likely. A few of these may be strong or severe. Heavy rains are a good bet as well.
– This front will stall out across the region into early next week. Low pressure will then ride northeastward along the boundary in what looks like a winter time setup. This will bring heavy rain to much of the region and this may cause another round of flooding for some.
– Rainfall of 1″-3″ looks like a good bet for much of the state with locally higher amounts possible. Here is a look at the rain forecast from a couple of models during this time…
– Temps early next week look nothing short of CHILLY with a few days in the 50s. Maybe lower in the mountains?
– That storm may actually bring some snow in the highest elevations of the Appalachian Mountains!
– Nothing else has changed with my May thoughts… normal to cooler than normal. Rainfall will be above normal and the severe weather pattern will likely kick into overdrive again for mid to late month.
Have a great Saturday and take care.

Thank you for the updates — feel better.
Thanks Chris!
Was watching TWC yesterday and they were saying that (in a tornado like that) you really need to be underground. In addition to that, they had a bad squall line come in EARLIER that day which caused power outages and some of the city didn’t get siren warnings and couldn’t watch TV. Sad.
I have been looking at these storm surveys in Alabama, and these tornadoes were very, very large. I have seen at least five with a path width of 3/4 of a mile or larger.
thanks for all you do Chris! Hope you feel better soon! : o)

Hey Chris! I’m hoping the brief period of beautiful weather makes you feel a bit better. It looks like the same ole thing for next week! Will warm weather ever be here to stay?
Morristown has been doing a lot of survey’s the past few days and currently 17 tornadoes have been confirmed across eastern TN and southwestern VA. Three strong tornadoes confirmed, one half mile wide EF4 confirmed in southeastern TN, another in southeastern TN an EF3 in Bradley County (which was affected by the EF4 also), and an EF3 (3/4 a mile wide) in Washington County, VA…from just south of Abingdon up to Glade Spring. Abingdon is just up the road a little ways from Bristol. All of those were deadly tornadoes.

Wow!
Something interesting I never though to look up. The old Fujita scale vs the new one. In terms of wind speed, the OLD Fujita scale had lower wind speeds. So, as far as that goes, an old f3 wind speed could be considered an E f4, though other factors come into play as well, such as build quality etc.
It still amazes me that footage of the Tuscaloosa tornado. WAY out of what we have all known as tornado alley, yet here there is a MAJOR Plains tornado in Alabama and it was HUGE and awesome to look at but HORRIBLE seeing it go right through a city, which seems much more likely than ever before unfortunately.
The good folks in ND will be waking up to 4-8″ of snow on May 1st from the blizzard going on up there! The wild weather of spring 2011 continues.
Thanks Chris for all you do and I hope you feel better. Now, on to the bad 4-letter word you stated in the blog…BLAH!!!! Hope everyone has a great Sunday.
I’d say the Glade Springs area over southwest Va that was hit by the EF3 might be the hardest hit in this region. Some of the footage coming out of there is something else too. There was a truck stop on I-81 that was obliterated and actually has 81 shut down for a while with debris and semis scattered about. Some of those semis at the truck stop were thrown through the air by it. That tornado is the first EF or F3 in SWVA since the big outbreak of 1974. Some of those storm structures on radar were impressive. I thought for sure some of those large supercells coming up from the Chattanooga/Knoxville area would weaken coming north but they held together well and there some well defined hook echos and all showing up near Kingsport/Bristol. The local forecasters were amazed themselves during their live coverage.
There was another tornado confirmed in southern WV and two more in what would be considered as “western VA” out just past Roanoke. One of those I included in the 17 for Morristown was actually in Blacksburg’s CWA but Smyth County in VA is a SWVA county.
Still more survey’s to come I think too. So these could still go up. Just helps reinforce Chris’ point about KY dodging a major bullet with this too.
Moving from North Dakota to Kentucky, I totally believe that. Seemed it could snow from Labour Day to Memorial Day.
Jake
That’s how May looks to start off.
