Good Thursday everyone. Wow is all I can say about the severe weather pattern of this spring. We are coming off a heart breaking severe weather day across much of the Tennessee Valley into the south as deadly tornadoes pounded many areas. The tornado outbreak of Wednesday will go down as one of the worst in the history of this country.
We escaped this outbreak with only a glancing blow and no one is going to complain about that. If you wanna see just how powerful these storms to our south were… take a look at this amazing video out of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
That is some of the most amazing tornado video you will ever see. I can only imagine what the light of day will bring to folks across the hardest hit areas. My fear is the death toll will hit triple digits.
Believe it or not… we have the threat for one more round of showers and storms today as a weak disturbance dives in from the northwest. There is a small chance these storms go strong or severe with high winds and hail being possible. You can track the storms here…
Winds will be rather gusty today and temps will be much cooler as we stay in the 60s.
What happens after today?
– Friday will see clearing skies from west to east as some milder air begins to work back in.
– The weekend will start out very nice with temps well into the 70s for Saturday with partly sunny skies.
– A cold front moves our way on Sunday and will bring scattered showers and thunderstorms with it… especially the second half of the day. Temps should continue to be warm.
– This front will slowly work through into Monday with another round or two of showers and storms. There is a chance for this to produce another shot at some strong storms and heavy rains.
– The long range pattern into May looks like more of the same in terms of an active severe weather spring. The month is likely to see a nice back and forth temp pattern with temps averaging normal to a bit below normal as a whole.
Thanks for all the hard work you guys have put into giving us severe weather updates. It is greatly appreciated and I hope I have returned the favor in giving you guys all the information you needed during this run of severe weather.
I will update as needed. Have a great Thursday and take care.
i live on state rt 1458 just out of the city limits of flatwoods, ky. at 3:30 am this morning the winds were really cranking. It woke me up i looked out and could see stars to my left and on the right a big almost white/gray cloud was moving over fast. it was very strange looking but it was dark. the trees were really moving and the wind was hitting two sides of the house it was a little creepy up on my hill there was no rain but alot of wind and a fast moving cloud of some kind. was there anything major going on at that time that anyone knows abt or any damgage from the wind at that time. my heart goes out to all the people who was affected by theses storms yesterday in the south.

Thanks Chris, I think I can speak for everyone here that you have done an awesome job during this severe weather season! Your Hard work is greatly appreciated more than you know. You have kept us very informed before, and especially during all these rounds of severe weather. I for one appreciate how you go into great detail with your forecasts, giving us a heads up days in advance of anything that may come our way. By doing things the way you do, you have us prepared in advance, and no doubt you have saved a lot of lives. This is the first site I go to daily to get the forecast.
Did I hear correctly that the storm that produced this tornado, that hit Tuscaloosa
started near Philadelphia, MS and traveled over 300 miles?
Thanks Chris!
I fell asleep this afternoon and missed the entire thing!
I can’t believe the video’s I saw. Wow! I honestly NEVER want to see anything like that in a city. The only way I would really want to witness a tornado would be in a controlled environment in a flat field. Seeing it go through a populated area is terrible.
Yeah, the same cell was still tornado warned about a half an hour ago and may still be, though I haven’t checked back.
Thank you so much for all the updates, and all the restless days and nights that you devote to keeping us updated. It is greatly appreciated! I actually had to set up a twitter account for someone today to specifically follow you and have your tweets sent to their phone. It was getting a bit hard forwarding that many through the day! 🙂 Thanks again!!
wednesday was something else. never seen that many classic supercells at one time along with helicity values close to 1000. would not be surprised if a few spots saw hail on thursday.
If you think hills offer lots of protection, here is a video that will make you think twice that valleys are safe.

My thoughts are with lots of people tonight…
I certainly agree. I’ve watched several different videos of the tornadoes in Tuscaloosa and in Birmingham and they are scary!
Here’s some REALLY good footage!

Thank you Chris. I, for one, am so over these severe storms and tornadoes. Sure, they are exciting for weather nuts like myself… but they have taken too many lives this time and the bloom is definitely off the flower.
Hoping there is no loss of life in these next storms, and my heart and prayers go out to all the people left in the devastation in the wake of these tornadoes. I am completely heartbroken for them.
Thank you to all the hard working mets and wanna-be’s that helped us stay informed and safe.
God bless to all.

Chris, there are no words to express the appreciation for what you do. The fact that we “lucked out” on this go round does not alter the fact that many people to our south lost their lives and homes. My prayers go out to them.
As for today, I will take the sunshine, and enjoy it, and hope for more of the same. Thanks again for all you do.
well its a tragedy, but this guys who film yesterday the 2 big ones are guys with STEEL GUTS I TELL YA.
Chris, as usual you have provided a fantastic service to our community and I truly appreciate your efforts. I have what I feel is a good selection of people that I daily depend on and you are right on the top!
Death toll from yesterday over 200 now…
From the bottom of my heart I thank you Chris for all you do for us. You are the best.
It’s terrible!
I wonder if the ones who died just ignored the warnings or just wasn’t listening to the weather and not knowing what was even going on……….OR…….Maybe they did take shelter as well as they could and it just wasn’t enough. Sometimes going into the most interior section of your house isn’t enough in a tornado like that….
Really SAD 🙁
I’m guessing one or more of the above in every case…the toll is now up to 215, and will likely rise…a truly catastrophic outbreak, and when all is said and done my be the largest ever…
Is there any connection with all the tornadoes to our south and the fact that a lot of snow also went to our south this past winter?
I watched TWC as the huge tornado hit Birmingham. Today there are so many reports of building flattened and no way for anybody to survive even if they did take cover. How awful and scary for all those touched by this horrible weather event. It was nobody’s fault and so many suffered. We can only hope to continue to dodge these bullets.
251 last count I had 🙁
The Indians had a name for an F4 or F5 in the old days before they were even called tornadoes, let alone the modern EF scales. They called them “Dead Man Walkin'”-if you were seeing one that’s what you were. Moral of the story is that with ample warning and in your best safe place, if a hi end EF4 or EF5 rolls through, your odds are slim. My heart breaks for all those people.
That’s why Mr Bailey Sleeps about 2 hours a night during these events-To make sure nothing happens to us bloggers.
Thanks Chris
I’ve been reviewing the severe threat today, and it looks like there might be the smallest threat (and I do mean small) for some small hail in southern Indiana and northwestern Kentucky—but probably nothing strong enough to get hail any bigger than quarter size….lapse rates are high, but any hail potential will be dependent upon instability and CAPE values–and considering we’re at the near peak time for heating of the day—these CAPE values are not very strong. Shouldn’t be anything for us to worry about.
My thoughts are with those involved in the Alabama tornados yesterday. Kinda like the 74 outbreak but in a smaller area…
If this outbreak were to have occured in 74, when forecasting wasnt as good, the death toll would have surpassed the April 3-4 event. The death toll from this may just get to or surpass that event anyway. The public was aware of the situation, but when you are dealing with EF-5 tornadoes that stay on the ground for 300 miles, without a basement your odds are not good. Prayers sent to the South, and thank God for the cloud cover we had here mid-afternoon yeaterday. Chris, I give you 2 thumbs up for pointing out the higher risk this spring severe season had in store for us and the southeast. The EF-5 (speculating the intensity) Tus-Birm twister was on the ground for 300+ miles. WOW!!! That is the distance from Somerset to Atlanta….how is that for perspective?

While the tornadoes themselves traveled a large distance (300 + miles—that’s incredible,) the amount of real estate covered, in my perspective at least, was surpassed by the 1974 outbreak. Someone may have to do some research on this—just for research purposes only. The magnitude and impact on human life here is probably on par with or slightly greater than the 74 outbreak since the tornadoes yesterday hit more populated areas.
The weather coverage even before the event yesterday occured was MORE than sufficient–I saw comments on a leading news website that some people thought the weather coverage was “overkill.” All I have to say is that it is better safe than sorry–and although the meteorologists had to go through some long sleepless nights, at least everyone was safe. Things here could have been much much worse. I’ll definitely count my blessings. 🙂
Whoa. What’s with this intense wind that seemed to come out of nowhere?

I have a piece of adware on my computer that I obviously wish to get rid of (it slows down my computer… -.-). Avira Free Version is a perfectly fine antivirus program, but apparently it does not have this (insert obscene adjective here) adware on its detection list. I looked into this adware a bit more and found that AVG should have it on its detection list, which would mean a 😀 for me and a 🙁 for the adware… elimation of the adware in other words. There are several problems with this idea, though. 1. I am not sure about this, but I believe I read somewhere that having multiple AVs (AntiVirus) may cause confliction between programs… is this true? (read titular question for the specifics) 2. Supposing that the above question were answered with a “Yes”, I would have to remove Avira. I have also read that this action is difficult to fully complete… is this true and if so, how would I go about screwing the adware (FYI it is called WhenU SaveNow, and it is despicable in my personal opinion)? 3. Should someone else incidentally have this (virus? adware? program?)… thing… and have successfully removed it, could you answer back with your solution? Notes about the *censor*ing software… I am aware that you (ahem) should (ahem) be able to remove the “thing” (I refuse to name it except in an above example) in Windows’ Add/Remove Programs panel. It is not a part of the list of removable items, so I assume it must have latched onto a download (silly brother >:O). Because my computer is second-hand, it has a variety of rather shifty programs (in my paranoid opinion). Flock I think is decent, Limewire… not so decent, my idiot brother’s downloads off Limewire… VERY untrustworthy. However, the adware might have been present before that bozo downloaded Limewire, so I can’t fix the blame on Limewire. Also, this adware updates itself and seems to “read” the content on the web pages I browse and display related content… fortunately, it does not understand Mandarin. The adware PHAILS (phails, fails, same thing) in that it displays its unconvincingly poor “Click me” (the “click me” idea is displayed in many ways…) ideas in Internet Explorer while I browse in Mozilla Firefox -.- Any solution would be welcome.
