Good Friday to one and all. Our Kentucky Derby weekend is officially off and running and it looks like some storms may become an issue out of the gate. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will fire up across the state today and some of these bad boys may be strong or severe into this evening.
This is a warm and humid pattern that may repeat itself into Kentucky Derby Saturday. Some thoughts:
– A few rounds of storms will work from northwest to southeast across the region later today into this evening.
– Some storms could be strong or severe with hail and high winds.
– Highs today will generally run in the low and mid 80s. Storms and clouds will play a big role in local temps.
– Derby Day looks similar with some more scattered action around. Let’s hope it all avoids Churchill Downs. 🙂
Here are your tracking toys from the Storm Prediction Center…
I will have updates as needed and send out quick thoughts via twitter. Happy Oaks Day and take care.
boy we had some heavy rain and wind around 4 AM this morn. Some lightening and thunder but that was some really hard rain and the wind was beating it against the house.
Happy Oaks/Derby Days everybody!!! I am picking Daddy Nose Best to wear the roses, but if it’s not him – I’ll Have Another or Gemologist.
Oh yeah, can’t forget Calvin on Take Charge Indy!!
Looking at the radar, there is a big squall line moving toward St. Louis. Do they get the worst of the worst or what? Crazy!
It’s Derby weekend! Let’s hope if Louisville gets storms it’s not during the running of the Oaks or Derby. Before or after will be fine, thank you.
There’s a lot of good horses in this year’s race and I’ve narrowed it down to 4. Might have to bet them all!
Looks like SPC is likely to issue a watch for parts of central and western Ky. Hail and especially damaging winds will be the main issues. At this time, the tornado threat is less than 2%.
After an early and fast start, this year’s tornado season sure has been quiet. Still, our area still have to get through May before we can breath a little easier.
Speaking of storms, I was recently on a night-time flight over Minnesota with t-storms in the distance. I’m somewhat of a reluctant flyer, but I had an awe-inspiring view of the frequent lightning flashes that I will not soon forget. Wish I had thought to record it.
Yep, Severe T-storm Watch until 22:00 tonight. Small MCS trying to get going out in southern IN…may smack the Louisville area in an hour or two.
