Good Friday everyone. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is now out for parts of noth central Kentucky until 7pm. A cluster of showers and severe thunderstorms is racing eastward out of southern Indiana and will move into the watch area over the next few hours.
Damaging winds and large hail will be the main threats with this cluster of storms. Torrential rains may also cause local high water issues. Here is a look at the watch outline and the latest warnings…

As is always the case… we have you set up with the latest radars to track the severe weather…

The overall setup into the weekend continues to favor a major rainfall event for much of western and northern Kentucky. Rain totals of 3″-4″ will be possible in many areas. This will lead to flash flooding and river flooding in the coming days. I will get more into the flood threat later today.
I will have updates as needed through the evening and will send out quickies through twitter. You can follow me at Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog.
Take care.
good to see southern and SE KY might be ok as far as bad storms this timer round, late nite storms overnite dont scrare me in our area as they always eeaken.
tx Baileyt boy. ent to DR today and im as of now free of the bad stuff. still have to go back ever couple months to keep rye on things.
Awesome to hear! Congrats, and continued good health.
So glad to hear this….nice to know there’s lots of happy weather tracking for you!!
Thanks, Chris. Even though we live right near Lake Cumberland, where we are at, we don’t hve much worry about it flooding here. But I know they do in Williamsburg and other places. Lake Cumberland is supposed to be at -40 feet from pool, but right now, there is nearly as much water in it as ther normally is at summer pool.
Rolo, That is GREAT news! So glad that you are doing good! Keeping you in my prayers!
Looks like a nasty storm is about to close in on Louisville right now. Lots of dark red in it.
That’s awesome news!
@packman
That’s not the company that built my house. It rhymes with bose and company.
Rolo…That is wonderful. Will continue to pray you do well
Looks like that line of storms moving east, just west of L’ville, is trying to get it’s act together and connect with the storms around B’green. Wonder if it will make it to central Ky?
Thundering in Lexington.
Rockin in Sadieville!!!
I hear it
The tornado sirens went off in Shelbyville, even though the Tornado Warning is for southern Shelby County.
Lots of rotation showing up near Little Mount in northern Spencer County. Funnel Cloud reported with this storm.
This is what confuses me about squall lines. This looks to be about the same intensity as what came through the other night, yet this squall line is loaded with lightning but the other wasn’t.
I’m about to take shelter in Lawrenceburg. Not liking what I’m seeing on 88D radar at all. This is going to be a bad dude when it rolls through town.
I would take shelter too. The rotation on the Shelby, Spencer, Anderson County line looks very strong.
By the looks of it, hunkering down would be your best bet. WOW!
Will these make it to Johnson County before they weaken or will end up mainly rain for us?
It looks like it’s headed straight for northwest Fayette too. I’m starting to pray that this thing dies out!
I’m glad to be out of town. I’ll check back with you to see if there is damage in Versailles!
Report of a rotating wall cloud near Lawrenceburg.
Another report of a wall cloud at Hwy 151 and US 127 in Anderson County.
This storm continues to look very strong. It has REALLY rapped up now. Northern Anderson County should definitely seek shelter! This storm looks very nasty!
Storm looks impressive on radar. Get ready, Lexington… it’s headed your way and will be there very soon!
WLKY news chopper is following the super cell in eastern Anderson County. There is definitely a wall cloud with this storm.
The tornado sirens went off about two minutes ago in Nicholasville. The thunder and lightning and with the sirens going off this storm is already worst then anything that happened two days ago.
Jake
So dark in Frankfort that my security light came on. Lots of rain, thunder and lightning. Sirens were on for 30 minutes. Still raining, but no wind.
Can anyone report what happened in Lawrenceburg sowe know what is headed east?
We had visual rotation…textbook rotation…as it passed directly over town. We were VERY lucky it did not touch down. This storm was hard core. Wow..haven’t seen that in a long time.
Lexington police reporting funnel cloud in Hamburg area
Thanks for the update WXman!! Looks like this thing will slide just north of us here in Powell Co.
I live near hamburg and you could see the rotation. Very impressive.
Wow. The rotating wall cloud passed right over us near Cooper Drive at Tates Creek Road. Saw it coming and headed for the basement. From the basement window could see things get green, then the wind picked up. All clear now, but lost in the shuffle is that we are now under a tornado watch until 2:00 a.m.
Guys, can anyone tell me if this will weaken before moving into the EKY area?
I live in hamburg near polo club and am currently out of town. Can anybody tell me the situation in that area? Damage?
Watched wall cloud from my basement in Lawrenceburg. Unbelievable rotation with the thing. I have no clue how a tornado didnt touch down.
Anybody on here from Winchester? Looks like a pretty good hook going right through northern Clark right now..?
No reports of anything serious- at least no indication of a touchdown.
live in Winchester. It’s eerily calm now.
So thankful you are safe!
Rotating wall cloud in Winchester. Very eerie, no rain or lightning with it, it is all ahead and north of it. I’ll try to get pics to chris.
This rotation has gone all the way from west of Anderson Co. to Montgomery Co. now and lots of funnel cloud reports, and yet thankfully no touchdowns reported. Looking to the west of Ky, looks like its firing up again. Tornado warnings in Missouri now. Wonder if it will hold together as it comes this way?
Damage in the Chevy Chase area of Lexington. Romany Road, Suggins restaurant, Cathedral of Christ the King.
The new storms that have developed aren’t wasting any time and appear to be strengthing…..I would have thought they would be more sluggish with the time of day we’re seeing them but who knows.
Well i’m glad you are getting what you live for enjoy and keep it up there 🙂
Rolo Thank God I have been praying for you. Also I hope the weather will skip us this time we have had alot lately not that I wish it on anyone.
I was also very surprised that a tornado did not touch down. The storm had very strong rotation and really rapped up in northern Spencer County through Shelby and Anderson Counties.
Now accepting bets…
How many people out there think the storms will weaken to just heavy rain by the time they get to Louisville? OR…they will split N/S over Louisville and come back together just east of the Metro.
Anyone??
I am watching live coverage from St. Louis. A tornado is on the ground just north of there.
http://www.ksdk.com/video/live/default.aspx
Same in Winchester…the rotation was spectacular. You could see it was trying to form something but never did. Very little wind at the surface were I was, just south of it, but the mesonet station was directly under it and picked up some good gusts…can also see the wind shifts on the live data around 8:00 pm
did an overview of damaged areas in woodford county being home for the holiday, found straight line damage off marsailles.rd with many trees down
Chevy Chase update. Just took a drive around. There are several large trees down. Suggins had the front glass windows of the restaurant side spontaneously disintegrate. No one injured. People in the bar never noticed (perfect). Shopping carts from Kroger are all over the area, though, even over to Chinoe. I mean, they are everywhere. Yuppie Moms remain in their basements.
Wow! What a night! Everybody stay safe- so glad no one hurt in Lex. Any thoughts on if the storms at St. Louis weaken overnight as they approach Kentucky?
Sure hope so-I don’t like night time severe weather one bit.
HEY! Two lines of supercelluar thunderstorms headed towards Lex! Think I’ll sleep it off in the basement at Malone’s tonight!!!!
Reports of injuries and people trapped on a plane at Lambert airport in St. Louis after a possible tornado went through. Weren’t these storms being warned for? Why were people still out there on planes?
Report that St. Loius’s airport to a direct hit by a tornado. Damage to terminal and injuries.
Weeellll…I’m not betting anything because I’m @ poverty level enough as is…however…
I live in Bardstown/NelsonCo., and I’m not sure if it’s the “Knobs” or what surrounding our area, BUT..?!- for the past several (when I say “several”, I mean 10-15-17 storms ago..lol), it seems that we’ve been in the ‘sweet spot’ far as being in ‘the clear’ far as any really BAD Wx is concerned?! Meaning: The storms are heading straight for us here in Nelson, but once they hit the Hardin/Nelson Co. line, they seem to ‘split’ and/or weaken considerably, resulting in basically just a pretty good noisy ‘light show’ along with a brief heavy downpour. But, as with any storm(s), it’s up in the air and as to anyones’ guess what the NEXT storm might be able to accomplish??! Being a major ‘scaredy-cat’ when it comes to storms/tornadic wx., I just prepare for the worst, and thank God when it doesn’t happen! 🙂
Thanks for the report Mitch! I live on Marsailles, but am in Fla. now. I heard there were a lot of trees down and privacy fences down. Also my niece who lives in the same neighborhood had all here patio furniture blown away! She has no idea where it landed!
Keep posting stuff like this i really like it
very good information.i like it
Your RSS feed does not show on my screen safari how can I fix it?
