DAMAGING WINDS ARE LIKELY FOR MUCH OF KENTUCKY OVERNIGHT. Gusts in excess of 80mph will be possible as this line snakes its way eastward. Southern Illiniois recoreded a wind gust of 105mph a bit earlier!!
Take precautions now! More updates to come. Take care.
10:25pm Update
A DANGEROUS situation is unfolding across Kentucky tonight. A line of damaging wind producing thunderstorm is working eastward and may put down isolated tornadoes as well. Gusts to 80mph or better will be LIKELY overnight. A TORNADO WATCH is now out for much of the state until 5am. Here is the watch outline and the latest warnings…
Updates as needed and via twitter. Take care.
7:55pm Update
a TORNADO WATCH is now out for parts of western Kentucky until 2am CDT. This watch includes Paducah and Owensboro. Here is a look at the watch outline and the latest warnings…
I will have more updates as needed and will have rapid fire updates via Twitter. Take care.
7pm Update
It is shaping up to be a long night across Kentucky! Thunderstorms are still off to our west early this evening and will be pushing into far western Kentucky very late this evening. The severe storms will then roll eastward reaching eastern Kentucky by morning.
No time is good for severe weather… but the nighttime is the absolute worst time of the day since many people will be sleeping and not paying attention to what’s going on. Everything is still a go for a big severe weather event for western and parts of central Kentucky. The farther east you live the smaller the threat for severe weather.
The blog will be here with you each step of the way and have updates as needed. Take care.
Previous Update
Good Tuesday everyone on what is likely to become a very busy severe weather day across the state. A major severe weather outbreak is likely today into tonight from the midwest into much of the Ohio Valley. We have the blog set up with your normal tracking tools.
Before we get to the toys… Here is a breakdown of how this may play out…
– Clusters of storms will be around into the first half of today and some of these may be strong or severe. Heavy rains will also be likely and this could cause some local high water issues.
– Skies should clear out late morning into the afternoon as temps soar into the 80s on a strong southwesterly wind.
– Thunderstorms will begin to develop across western Kentucky and roll eastward during the late afternoon and evening hours. Some of these storms may get out on their own and those will really be the ones to watch for possible tornadoes.
– This should transition toward a squall line racing eastward into the overnight hours.
– Scattered storms would then continue into early Wednesday.

For those wondering about the analog severe reports site that CB put up in recent posts, here’s the home page.
http://www.eas.slu.edu/CIPS/ANALOG/WARM/analog.php
From there, you can navigate to a certain run and click on it, then select ‘impact’ for severe reports based on the top 15.
Remember, though, just like the NAM snowfall maps, it’s more speculative than anything
Nevertheless, expect a widespread severe event for most of the region later today and tonight.
Got moderated…
Here’s the severe analog site CB posted recently. This is the home page…

Navigate through the runs and select ‘impact’ for the top 15 analog severe forecast.
Thank you for helping me through all those tough times in life. I would thank you from the bottom of my heart. It’s really helpful information.
Thanks for the tools, Chris. Looks like we are going to need them for sure later today and tonight. Going to definitely be a day to keep an eye on the weather and the blog. Thanks in advance for all you do, Chris.
It looks like it is in Northern parts only. Will these shift and eventually affect EKY or SEKY? I look forward to hearing from some of the regulars.
Wow, latest SPC discussion mentions a possible Derecho to sweep through KY tonight. The last Derecho I remember here (June 2005 I think) was intense and literally shook the walls of our house. I believe that nobody in Kentucky is totally safe from the potential of damage tonight.
Look like SE Kentucky is gonna miss out on this round, am I right?
Latest sounding shows freezing level around 10,000 ft…which would make you think that very large hail will be possible with any storms that fire this afternoon across KY. The main event tonight still looks to affect everyone, especially if a Derecho does indeed form.
No, it will come tonight. Get your weather radio ready.
i see a few KY SUPER CELLS forming this evening, and as u know thos e indivudual cells are the ones that can lay the HAMMER DOWN.
er u at WXMAN what u seeing on ur end.
It looks to be lifting North more than anything right now. I would love to know what time frame would the storms develop in the west and what time they will be close to EKY if they do form.
Where is everyone? I was in hopes there would be some updates as to how bad this is going to get around the Mercer/ Burgin area.
Web briefing really downplays this event for EKY….here’s a link:
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/jkl/?n=webbriefing
Moderation is killing the comments.
I find this interesting. The 12Z NAM run places a solid squall line parallel to the OH River at 2AM Wednesday morning. Here is the 500 vorticity chart from that exact same time. Notice all the vort maxes right along the squall line. That is indicative of a lot of potential for spin-ups along the squall line. Those tornadoes are the most difficult to warn for, and being 2AM this could be disastrous.
http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/nam/12/images/nam_500_018m.gif
I know it sounds like I’m paranoid, but I’ve been taking pictures of my house inside and out.
I think this thing could get pretty ugly, especially from E’ville and Henderson KY through Louisville to Frankfort and anybody 30 miles north and south of these areas.
Storms at night are a very scary scenario and especially if they go severe. You just cannot see them coming. Anyway, do you think EKY will get in on the severe threat or will it weaken?
RAIN RAIN RAIN!!! Been a solid rain since the early hours this morning, no sign of letting up until 5 or 6. Already at 2in+!
Expecting some moderate flooding, will have to see how the rivers do.
Will the squall line tonight extend up into southern ohio? Will it be traveling more northeast or southeast? Not liking the timing if it is going to be severe. May catch a lot of people sleeping!
Got long winded, thus got moderated. 2in+ rain up here and still coming.
Will squall line tonight be up into southern ohio and what direction will it be traveling? a northeast slant?
This blog is like drinking!
MODERATION is the key!?
I don’t blame you for doing that! Lol. I think a high risk will be issued at some point for at least western ky.
Any idea what Lexington is looking to get? Thanks!
Hope the Western KY peeps check in and let us know what they are getting. Everyone stay safe! Super cells scare the snot out of me.
Later in the day, if not tonight, some severe storms, have your weather radio up and running.
Hopefully there isn’t any large hail, I just got a check in the mail for 4500 dollars from the hail storm that hit two weeks ago in Northern Pulaski.
Wow, I agree that the main event tonight could be potentially disasterous the more I look at it. I think everyone should be on alert but I think mainly western and northern parts will get the worst part.
Moderation is driving me insane! The more I look at tonights round of severe weather, the more I see what could be a disasterous event around here…..are you all seeing the same? What about EKY? It looks to get in on the action too in my opinion.
Thank you! I’m alright with rain and thunder/lightning but I don’t like the wind. At all. Hopefully it will come and go 😉
Your welcome, I’m with you, don’t care for the wind that much.
I can’t get the impact to work. How do I do that?
I wouldn’t count eastern KY out just yet. Eastern KY has something the rest of the OH Valley doesn’t have…orographic lift caused by the mountains. That can be a big influence on forcing storms.
After going to the home page address above, you’ll see several graphic boxes depicting ‘runs’ based on 24, 36, 48, and 60 hours.
I selected the first box NAM212F024
This takes me to this address:
http://www.eas.slu.edu/CIPS/ANALOG/WARM/stats.php?reg=DOM1&model=NAM212&fhr=024&flg=new
Then, you’ll see a large box entitled “Impact Guidance”
Click on that for the analog severe weather report forecast.
Oh ok. Thanks for the help!
This is so odd…No post for 3 hours.
What is the site that you can sign up to receive weather alerts on your smartphone (besides Chris’ Twitter updates that is)? I think it has been mentioned here before. Thanks for your help!
It’s not that people aren’t posting, it’s just the fact that they get moderated and just give up.
curious about what a Derecho is? That’s a new term for me 🙂 Seriously whats the real risk for tornadoes in this area vs straight line winds? Both can be devastating I know.
Oh and timline for Morehead area? Thoughts on arrival of squall line/storms?
Think the line will lose strength once it reaches the Lexington area?
Km, from my amateur understanding of the term—I think a derecho is basically an extremely intense line of thunderstorms that move at a very rapid rate of speed, generally look like a squall line, and contain very high wind gusts and damage potential.
They tend to cross many many miles in a short time (300 or more miles, sometimes in a matter of several hours) and generally leave wind damage all along their path.
Also, derechos start to make a “hard turn” towards the end of their life cycle, as can be seen from some archived radar footage—someone posted one a while back but I dont remember who did it, or when the event was from.
Thanks very much Aaron…I figured it was something along those lines, but had never heard that termed used before..any thoughts on the intensity of the storms as they hit Morehead area..we are about an hour East of Lexington? I hate nighttime severe storms..
Thanks Aaron I appreciate the information. Any thoughts on severity of storms as they head our way, an hour East of Lexington?? hopefully this one won’t go into moderation haha
I have no idea why I keep going to moderation and last post was “anonymous”??shew
NOAA says by the time the storms hit central KY, they should be in a squall line, and they advise to keep your weather radio on since the storms will be coming around 2:00 – 3:00 am for Lexington and points east.
Looks like wind damage will be the main threat, hail being second, and tornadoes third. Paraphrasing the NWS’s outlook…
Yeah and lots of times Derechos take on the shape of a giant bow that can cover large portions of states. They cause extensive damage. The one that blew through KY in June 2005 had 80+ mph winds with it along it’s path and it lasted for many hours and traveled hundreds of miles before dying.
There has been a confirmed tornado near the Missouri/Illinois border.
You can watch live coverage of the storms near St. Louis here:
http://www.ksdk.com/video/live/default.aspx
This super cell has a nasty looking hook on it. KSDK in St. Louis has received a picture of a tornado on the ground in Bowling Green, MO.
I don’t want anymore severe weather! My roof has already been damaged and I have to wait on the insurance company. The Big Sandy is practically at a breaking point.
I don’t see far east KY (Johnson, Floyd, Pike, Magoffin, etc) seeing much action from these storms. An inch of rain and a couple of rounds of thunder at best. Anyone else concur?
For those wishing to see photos of the July 2004 Derecho that came through KY. pull up the NWS Louisville page, do a search within the site for “Photos NWS Louisville”, then click on the very first ‘hit’. It will take you to thumbnails-click on “Thunderstorms’ and when the list of events/photos come up, you can see the photos about halfway down.
I remember the derecho well here in Bardstown-no electricity for 3 days, stores couldn’t stay in Ice, Cable TV off for 6-7 days, and it was HOT & MISERABLE!
Here’s an archived motion radar image of that derecho
http://www.crh.noaa.gov/images/lmk/Events/derecho-dz-animation.gif
Interesting read about derecho’s…
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/misc/AbtDerechos/derechofacts.htm
There has been a report of a tornado in Girard, IL with houses damaged and people trapped. A rescue is underway.
A large tornado has been reported on the ground hear Litchfield, IL.
Tornado watch to be issued soon for parts of Indiana, as per the SPC.
I concur….it would have to be a mega cell to make it that far. If we were in the daytime with the heat helping the severe weather along I think it would be a different story but these are in the cooler part of the day and will be traveling a far piece to get here. I would love to hear someone else’s opinion on this….PLEASE 🙂
Classic tornadoes on the ground are being captured by Reed Timmer and his crew. These storms mean business. This is no joke. If you have family with no weather radio…keep them updated through the night.
what abt here in the Flatwoods/Ashland area. Will we see much of this sysyem tonight or in the morning?
WXman do you think we’ll see much around the Anderson/Franklin Co line? I appreciate your thoughts more than you know! Thanks
Apparently a large tornado on the ground near the southern suburbs of St Louis. Also, storms entering a ripe environment in southern Illinois. The Tor Con risk (Greg Forbes’ scale for tornado risk) is a 7. For parts of north central KY and southern Indiana it’s a 6. Looks like a very rough late night in store for Central KY.
I live in a=Anderson county, and I see a monster line of storms effecting us with isolated tornadoes possible. WXman may think differently though
Will this threat extend into EKY? I have a few family members that live in mobile homes and storms make me very uneasy for them, especially at night.
I am getting sick of moderation! Do you think the threat will extend into EKY? I have some family that live in mobile homes and storms like this make me uneasy for them, especially at night.

I have family that live in mobile homes and I need to know if this will stretch into EKY?
WOW! That’s a lot of tornado warnings just to the west of Ky. Guess I better get some sleep now, because in about 3 hours, will be up checking the weather. Gotta keep the family safe. Everybody out there stay safe. Gonna be a rough one.
I am in Louisville, KY. Is it anticipated that tornadic cells will make it this far or will weaken as they approach our area?
I think it will last into EKY. It may be in the slowly weakening stage, but I expect the entire state to be walloped.
Thanks! I was hoping for a different answer though. Hope everyone stays safe!
The Storm Prediction Center has Northern KY/north central KY in a moderate risk area for severe weather, with a 10% chance of EF-2 Tornadoes. Seems pretty significant. Other folks may have a better answer, but it looks like the line will form into a squall line with some spinup tornadoes along the line.
EJM,
In my opinion, the threat for damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado is still possible in Louisville—-most of KY is still in a favorable area for development of severe storms, so you should keep yourself with a way to get severe weather alerts should the storms get bad where you live.
Curious to get everyone’s opinion on eastern ky. I can’t see if the storms will hold out this far or die down to just heavy rains. Any input?
Thank you 🙂
Not what I was expecting, but based on SPC, the threat for Louisville and Lexington seems to be increasing. Which of course means the storms will split and go north and south.
Ok havent posted in a long time but got to admit I have a bad feeling about tonite’s weather. I am about 35miles NE of Lex., we live in a dbl wide trailer on a hillside, don’t really have anywhere else to go. DOes anyone else have a feeling this storm system can be really bad here.
Parts of eastern Ky have a slight risk of severe weather. From what I’ve read, it’s probably a squall line type of event with heavy rains, high wind, hail. That said, since it’s an overnight/early morning threat, having a weather radio is probably a good idea.
This line is super legit. I’m excited!! 🙂
(not for death and destruction)
Don’t you wish it were daylight to see the storms….it seems better that way to me.
New mesoscale discussion for Central KY. I don’t understand half of it but it looks ominous. Can anyone translate?
http://www.spc.noaa.gov/products/md/md0480.html
In a nutshell, SPC expects the severe weather to maintain strength. therefore, a new Tornado Watch will be issued soon for central KY. It’s going to be a long night. I hope people are taking this seriously. All the parameters are in place for spin-ups at any time.
Basically says that these things mean business at are going to hit Central KY hard. Mainly a strait line wind event but tornadoes are still a distinct possibility.
I would love it in daylight, but it comes in the night mostly, so im ok. u can see transformers explode better that way. 😉
Weather radio just went off. Tornado watch until 5 am for Fayette.
Looks like a nasty line of storms will hit Louisville between 12 and 1am. I will be up as soon as I hear thunder!
I would wait a while before making the call, but I would not want to be in a mobile home tonight. If it still looks ominous at 1:00 a.m, I would get to the church, the super Walmart, or any place sturdy that you can go. 80 mph straight line winds can do a serious number on a mobile home. I live in a two story brick home with a basement, and I am nervous.
Just heard a report of a measured 103 MPH straight line wind gust. Holy cow. I think it was in western KY…trying to confirm..
My weather radio never goes off anymore. Cannot figure out why. 🙁
Thomas here in Lynn Grove, KY about 8 miles west of Murray, KY. Will update as the storm system moves in. Be safe all.
I heard that it was in IL.
Straight line winds with this bow moving through southern MO and southern IL has reports of gusts 60-95 mph. Been watching local coverage all evening. Damage reports of trees down, roofs blown off homes and small buildings blown over.
Tornadoes are starting to pop up in the boot hill of MO and just north including one down in northern AR. These are confirmed by trained spotters.
Unfortunately the line is strengthening so almost the whole line moving into far southwest KY has tornado warnings issued with them. Gust front is causing what NWS feared, supercell storms ahead of the front.
Ok. Need to know why. I broke my ankle in Jan. had surgery. Now every time we have severe weather coming it about kills me. Why is that ? Anyone?
Radar seems impressive right now but not in a good way. Folks in Western KY will take the brunt of this system but nighttime killing should choke out some power of these storms by the time they reach eastern KY, but i suspect they may be fairly strong all across the state.
From Belski:
“10:48 Louisville NWS says storms will probably not weaken and may produce widespread damage as they move through. Be prepared for power outages. The SPC said winds to 70 but that may be too low”
Nasty bow seems to have it’s sights set on Lex, South Central KY, in time. Moving fast, too.
Thanks for the info from west KY..keep us posted.
Will do Russ. Nasty looking ride for all of KY tonight.
Ummm… not looking very good for Elizabethtown, is it?
Freaking out royally here….
What about SE KY…will the storms weaken before they get here? I sure hope so, just a little nervous.
Check out the live coverage in Evansville, Ind.
http://www.news25.us/
Three overturned semis around Mount Vernon, IL area around I-64 just reported. Alot of hail reports seems to be pea size to golf ball size with these storms. Looks like once morning comes MO, IL, IN and KY will have widespread damage either from straight line winds or possible tornadoes.
Really GREAT time for the Jackson radar to be down for maintenance… hahaha
Looks like the intensity of the bow heading towards Louisville is loosing some punch…
This got my attention:

What does it look like for Morgan County?
Thanks for the link. Great coverage!
metro louisville to get hit really hard in the next hour.
This reminds me exactly of the Super Tuesday Outbreak squall line that blasted through Kentucky.
I liked the comment from the guy on WAVE: “Folks, we’re going to have some wind damage in the area, if you haven’t figured it out by now.”
Heading on down! Stay safe everyone!
So once again it will be bad all over the state but pull then ou of nowhere pulls he Crazy Ivan around Lex and miraculously falls apart at the last after the heating of the day waines like an old man whoes Viagra fails and wears off!
tornado warning for metro louisville displaying on the nws radar, not showing up on there site.
I noticed that as well. I rely on that site fairly heavily. #fail.
I completely WANT this thing to fall apart. I’ve seen tornado damage in Lexington. My house was being built in May 2004 and the foundation was laid. The house beside of mine was almost finished and it got destroyed! Had my house been built, it would have been destroyed too. That’s what gives me the creeps about living on this side of town. I love storms but they make me nervous at the same time.
Better safe than sorry…..and who wants to get up later and take care of that.
Possible tornado on the ground in Scott County, IN, north of Louisville.
tornadic signature on radar to cross through central jefferson county it does have shot to produce a quick tornado.
How high is the threat for tornadoes in the Somerset area and what time should they arrive?
jackson radar down. technicans would have already left for the day.
that one is stronger looking on doppler.
I would imagine JKL will rely on Louisville, Knoxville and Charleston to issue warnings as needed.
Meant to say Morristown, TN to be accurate. 🙂
55 MPH gust here in NE Louisville as the line moved through
still week tornadic signal on radar moving into southern shelby and northern spencer counties. seek shelter now.
Hope the pink and purple cells on here aren’t debris from a tornado but it seems like that can show on radar as well. Is this thing weakening at all?
Any idea when these storms will be reaching east KY? I’m hoping hubby will be home from work before they get here. He usually gets in around 4:30.
there not. the higher dbz colors show a higher hail threat in those locations. this thing will not weeken much, in the daytime instabilty generally is a key player for severe convection at nightime a strong low level jet can take over to maintain storms which is the case tonight.
Wow thats bad timing. So you think these storms can carry some of the intensity into EKY, particuliarly Johnson County?
Will the tornadoes in the Louisville are move eastward or northeastward? Are the storms behind the main front also going to be severe?
Are the storms weakening some? There are broken areas in the line without warnings of some kind.
Thanks 🙂
Thanks Chris. We can always count on you to watch out for your NKY peeps too. Hoping this weather calms soon.:)
Let’s hope so!
There’s no thunder that I’ve heard at all yet. Sort of ODD since the storms are so close
Same here in Northern Jessamine. Just really windy and distant lightning. Boring so far…
Jake
East Frankfort seems to have dodged the bullet, at least as far as any major damage….some wind and rain, thunder rolling now. Louisville TV stations had excellent coverage and then the Lexington stations picked up coverage about 1:00 AM.
Crazy loud howling wind in southern Jessamine. Sounds like screaming and it’s freaking me out just a bit.
Wow. This has been a total non event in my area of town. Little thunder. A little gusty wind at first, then calm, the just light rain. Not even heavy rain. I’m not complaining. I’m surprised though based on that nasty looking line that was marching its way across this evening.
I know. The Lexington area can’t get good snows or storms. What gives?
