8pm Update
Good evening everyone. This is a very interesting evening and night ahead as we have heavy rains, high winds and the threat for severe thunderstorms. Much of western Ky continues to be under a TORNADO WATCH until 9 central time.
The line of storms prompting this watch will race eastward this evening and overnight and eventually impact the entire state. The severe threat with it will likely diminish the farther east it gets. We will still watch it into the wee hours of Saturday morning.
Storms or not… winds are cranking out there as gusts have been near 50mph in some areas. This trend will continue into the overnight.
The heavy rain threat is a real one and some areas will pick up more than 2″ of rain by Saturday morning. This will likely lead to, at least, some local flooding. I have no idea why there are no Flash Flood Watches out anywhere across the state. Given the recent flooding and a soggy ground… a watch would seem like a no brainer with torrential rain producing storms moving in.
I will have updates as needed so check back. Your tracking tools are below. Take care.
3pm Update
A TORNADO WATCH is now out for much of far western Kentucky until 9pm central time. Here is a look at the watch outline and current warnings.
More updates as needed. Take care.
Good Friday everyone and welcome to another day of tracking possible severe storms and heavy rains across Kentucky. As is the case when we have the threat for big storms… we have set the blog up for your tracking needs.
Before we get to the toys… here is a look at the breakdown…
– A line of showers and storms will enter western Kentucky this morning and slowly work eastward through the day. Some of these storms may be strong or severe. This action should reach eastern Kentucky by evening.
– There is likely to be some clearing behind this first line and that should fuel another line of storms in the west. This line would then sweep eastward this evening and tonight and may become the main severe weather maker.
– Damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes will be possible. The highest threat for severe storms will be across the west and south as of now.
– Torrential rains will also be likely and many areas could pick up another 1″-2″. This may cause more local high water issues.
– Winds will be gusty from today into Saturday as the big low responsible for the severe weather moves into the Great Lakes. Leftover showers will be possible Saturday as temps take a tumble during the afternoon.
– Sunday looks good as milder air fights back in.
– The 70s return early next week and we will have to watch the setup for the middle and end of the week for possible rounds of strong storms and heavy rains.
Here are the tracking tools for today’s action…

I will have updates as needed through the day and will send out quickies through twitter. You can sign follow me at Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog.
Have a great Friday and take care.
Worst spring fishing season I ever remember here in Eastern Kentucky. Averaging two storms a week, lakes are most all 5 to 10 feet above pool and muddy. Very aggravating. We have had horrible weather since December, we have gone straight from snow to floods.
Thank you Chris. Here we go again with more stormy weather.
Wow, the Jackson Purchase area of Kentucky is already highlighted in SPC’s hatched zone for “large and violent” tornadoes today! I’m waiting on the new update coming soon to see if they change the lines up much…
Thaks, Chris. I have been reading every day, but been so busy at work that I haven’t had a chance to comment.
We had hail the other day, but nothing really big on our end of town. The northern part of the county was where you were showing the pics of grapefruit sized hail, though, so I consider us very lucky! Will be watching the blog, and the radar closely today! Thanks for all you do.
WXman,
When you talk about a “negative tilt”, is this storm what you mean?? Where the storm line goes from NW to SE? Are those generally stronger than going from NE to SW?
My basement is still drying out from the last rain. 🙁
Mine, too, Nancy. There was 4.5 inches of rain in my rain gauge this past Tuesday morning — luckily, we didn’t have that much in the basement, but it’s still soggy here.
It seems to me to be getting to be a “regular thing” that when severe weather is brewing, KY seems to be in the slight risk every time…at least, this year. Wxman, let us know what you think after you see the updated SPC stuff. I am sure Chris will, as well.
Have a great day, guys!
Any idea of what Lexington can look forward to? Thanks 🙂 I really enjoy reading the blog and the comments!
A little surprised at the front’s progress on the radar, as it wasn’t supposed to come through until Fri *night* for Central/Eastern KY. Why would it speed up so much since last night?
Yes, today’s storm is a perfect example of a negatively tilted system. Imagine swinging a baseball bat. When you first swing the bat doesn’t have much power. But as it makes it’s arc and passes the plate, it gains power. It’s basically geometry and physics. Cold fronts are the same way, you get that swing around the low where the front is outrunning the low and it really creates a ton of lift in the atmosphere.
My other comment is in moderation. 🙁 But I think time of day will decrease severe weather in the LEX area. If this was going to blow through in the middle of the day, we’d have been in trouble. Western KY is where the action will be (mostly) today.
the storms in the SOUTH is the problem as far as BAD WEATHER this afternoon, ROBBING ALL DA ENergy.
The storms for our area later today are going to be from the upper level low spinning out west.
Jackson MS apparent tornado damage. Barely misses elementary school.
Our severe chances may be going up…
Sprinkles of rain in Frankfort…
We have ballgames at 5:30 in Johnson County and I am wondering if we’ll play. What time will the rain get here and how long will it last???
Tornado Watch for West Kentucky now.
The main part of the system is out west and things are just now beginning to fire behind this first line out closer to the front and main low. This first dying batch of rain raced out ahead of the warm front and I’d say now is probably getting eat away at by downsloping winds.

Looks like quite the tornado outbreak down in MS and AL. I’m wondering why the SPC doesn’t have a High Risk area out?
Well the baseball game has already been canceled and it looks like the softball tournament will be too. I don’t mind rain and sever weather but I don’t like it when it rains every day there is a ball game. So far the baseball team has played as many games as they have had canceled!
Looks like a large tornado just plowed through the southeast part of Tuscaloosa, AL. I need to get to a PC where I can watch a video, or maybe Chris can retweet something??? 😉
Following severe storm approaching St Louis
Our softball season starts tomorrow. We’ve had 2 practices. The rest have been cancelled because of the weather. It’s hard on everyone.
How is it that Reed Timmer is able to put himself in position to catch so many tornado’s on camera? They guy is amazing!
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
did you see my question above??
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ and instinct!
Yes and I got moderated. Basically, yes. This is a textbook negatively tilted system. The example I used was swinging a bat. As soon as you swing, you don’t have much power. But as the bat swings through the arc and crosses the plate it picks up power. These fronts are like that. The cold front is outrunning the low and that causes a LOT of lift in the atmosphere. I have 50 MPH gusts right now in Lawrenceburg away from any t-storms!
What are you guys’ thoughts on the severe threat for Central Ky into the overnight? Is this batch of rain we’re getting now going to limit the severe potential?
I noticed storms going up in TN..which is where it looks like any storm action we’ll be getting is going to come from tonight—-I’m not so sure (in my opinion) that these storms are going to weaken out that fast, considering how dynamic the system is.
Chris, anyone else?
What is the main threat(s) that we will be looking at here in South Central KY when by the time the storm(s) arrive here?
It has been raining in Burgin all afternoon. Could that keep the severe weather down some?
Joy, I’ve been wondering the same thing. The local mets are not hyping the threat–which is good–but I think this still bears watching some. The storms in Western KY are still intensifying right now and haven’t merged into a squall line OR merged with the rain shield out ahead of the front.
I’ve looked at humidity values and supercell probabilities, bulk wind shear, moisture convergence and general severe weather parameters—the threat doesn’t seem too high yet—but the SPC said it may issue a watch east of the one currently in place if the threat continues.
Working against us: Time of day, rain that moved through earlier (and continuing even now). No instability.
Working for us: VERY dynamic system.
I’m not sure the shear/dynamics can overcome everything else. But the storms in west KY and west TN are very interesting. I’m shocked that we aren’t see tornado warnings on some of those.
will the watch be tornado or severe thurderstorm? Tornado’s scare me badly !
Yeah—-WXMan, the dynamic nature of the system is what makes it unable to be ignored at this point….guess we’ll just have to watch the radar and see where the trends take us….
Tornado, more than likely. The rest of the watches today have all been tornado watches due to the amount of wind shear available in the atmosphere, and of course the changing of wind direction with altitude. The isolated tornado threat generally overrides any severe thunderstorm threat, since a tornado watch automatically means a severe thunderstorm is also possible in the same area.
Storms could get mavericky!! Just sayin…
I can see Bill Mecke’s head from my house!!!!
I can’t believe that south central KY (basically the I-65 corridor is what I’m thinking) isn’t already under a watch of some sort. What could SPC be waiting on?? The cells in the Nashville, TN area are clearly not weakening at all.
Yeah, well I can see Russia from my house.
Sounds like SPC is not going to issue any more watches for KY. They’re just going to let it go from here..
Yeah, am a little surprised myself. Those storms around Nashville moving NE look very formidable.
Tornado Warning! Green Co. Marion Co. Take shelter!
Not one, but two severe squall lines yet to blow through central KY….and no watch in place. SPC fumbles again. Thankfully LMK is putting out warnings anyway but it would have sure been nice to keep people alert with a watch box.
Pea-size hail, heavy rain, high winds, and EXTREMELY vivid lighting in Bardstown right now. Oddly enough, the thunder is VERY faint??! Three loud claps earlier and that’s been it, then the hail, etc started…oops..sorry..thunder is increasing…
Snowdome all winter long and now every single heavy rain is hitting us smack on here in Central KY! How annoying. I’m all ready for a raindome whenever it’s set to kick in… anytime now would be terrific!
Just as soon as I get my foodplots in it will quit….does it every year… I take that back, I usually get 1 good rain to sprout everthing then it quits.
Well apparently they felt the need wasn’t warranted because usually they have to feel at LEAST six (6) reports of severe weather would be filed in the watch area. We’ll see how many occur over central KY tonight—one more little line back behind the storms in Mercer Co. at the moment.
Is there still tornado threats in eastern Ky?
2.1 What is a Severe Thunderstorm or Tornado Watch?
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch outlines an area where an organized episode of hail 1 inch diameter or larger and/or damaging thunderstorm winds are expected during a three to eight hour period. A Tornado Watch includes the large hail and damaging wind threats, as well as the possibility of multiple tornadoes. Typical watches cover about 25,000 square miles, or about half the size of Iowa.
2.6 Why are watches not issued for all severe storms?
Many severe thunderstorms affect only a small area for a short period of time, making watches impractical. Watches are issued primarily for areas where well organized or significant severe weather is possible, or the severe weather threat is expected to persist for many hours.
