Good Thursday everyone. What a gorgeous weather day we had for our Wednesday and our Thursday looks to take it up a notch with more sunshine and even warmer temps. That’s the good news of the forecast… the bad news is we will likely see another round of strong and severe storms Friday into Friday night.
Since back in February… we have been plugging a very active severe weather season for much of the country and here at home. This has certainly been a busy start to the severe season and my fear is we have a long way to go before we get to the end of it.
Take a look at the severe weather reports across the country…
The numbers here in Kentucky are even more impressive…

Those numbers put Kentucky behind only Alabama and Georgia in total number of severe weather reports. Wow! We have had more severe weather than any state in the traditional tornado alley. That is pretty amazing when you think about it.
As mentioned… we will surely add a lot of severe weather reports to that before the year is done and we have a good shot at seeing severe storms Friday and Friday night.
A powerhouse of a low will crank up in the plains and head into the western Great Lakes Friday into Saturday. That will put us in a favorable section for some big time storms as we begin our weekend as a cold front plows through here by early Saturday. Here is the latest severe weather risk from the Storm Prediction Center…
Friday
Saturday
Damaging winds, large hail and isolated tornadoes will be possible as these storms blow through here. Lingering showers will then continue into Saturday as gusty winds continue. Temps will be much cooler during this time.
The cool shot doesn’t have much staying power as warmer air begins to fight back in on Sunday and really gets going early next week. This may not be such a good thing as it may lead to a period of round of strong storms and heavy rains for the middle and end of next week.
This is a pattern that can continue to dump a lot of rain on us over the next several weeks. We are already way above normal in the rainfall on the year and this looks to continue for the rest of spring. If that is the case… it will be very hard to get a lot of hot temps in here this summer as a wet ground and lush vegetation will have something to say about it.
I will have updates as needed so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

Severe weather poll asking how many preliminary tornado reports for this Friday.
Also, a bonus question that involves Yazoo City MS’s chance of another tornado.
Just click on my initials above. You have until 6:00 am Friday morning to submit your votes.
Actually, 7:00 am edt
My mom lives near Houston and my in-laws live in Fort Worth. They are all begging for rain and an end to the dry wind. (wildfires are everywhere)
I was raised in Texas and we always had severe weather in March and April, but now it seems the focus has shifted to Kentucky and surrounding states. Texas seems to have moved into the weather pattern that used to apply only to Mexico.
Excellent post Chris. Excellent. There’s a lot of chatter about Tornado Alley actually shifting eastward over the past few years and maps like this really move that idea along.
Any idea at to what time the rain will start tomorrow? Got a day off work and was planning to take the family to the zoo.
Those are great maps! What strikes out at me is the lack of severe weather reports west of basically I-35, especially in Oklahoma and Texas. That definitely used to be the “hotspot” for bad storms when I was growing up.
Found a great websight that I go to where I can watch the tornado chaser live. The link is http://www.tornadoalleylive.com/subindex/weather/maps
I was watching this last weekend when a tornado was caught on the link I was looking at. Just went to the sight and there are around 30 chasers in Oklahoma and Kansas right now. Check it out. It is really cool being in the car with them while they are chasing. So far I have seen 1 tornado on a live cam.
I love Kentucky Weather Center and come here pften to keep intuned with our upcoming weather. Just wanted to share the link. have a great day
That give me excitement of what may be to come!! 🙂
Have an update on my blog for those interested.
About when on Friday is is supposed to rain? Will it be well after dark so softball tournaments this weekend can at least get started?
I really found this website very interesting however my volume doesn’t seem to work in the live videos. Do you have this problem?
I have the same problem. I would guess that the storm chasers do not have it set up for us to hear. Wish we had chasers here in SE KY.
I was wondering if anyone else saw the “rainfall totals” that was forecast on WLEX this morning? My area, Jackson, was predicted to receive 3.85 inches of rain by 8am Saturday. I have been following the coverage for this storm all day and have yet to see any concern about the amount of rainfall. Can anyone tell me if that was possibly just an error or if the potential is there for that amount of rain?
Thanks for the reply. I appreciate it!
This is such a great resource that you are providing and you give it away for free. I love seeing websites that understand the value of providing a quality information. Thanks for sharing.
