Good Tuesday folks and welcome to an ugly day for much of the region. We made it through Monday with very little in the way or strong or severe storms around here and that was the first system all spring to underachieve in that department.
While the severe weather didn’t pan out… the heavy rains sure did and those rains will continue out there today. That is especially the case across central and eastern Kentucky as low pressure wraps up along the eastern Appalachian mountains. This low will bring a nice shot of chilly air in here as well with temps staying in the 40s for the east. The west will warm toward the 60s as some sun returns.
You can track the rain and temps here…
Current Temps
Winds today will be rather gusty once again… what else is new there?
Here is the breakdown of where we go from here…
– Sunshine will return to the area on Wednesday as high temps warm back into the mid and upper 60s with low 70s west.
– Thursday looks great with highs in the 70s and mainly sunny skies.
– Low pressure makes a run at us later Friday into Saturday. This will be a slow moving storm that will bring some thunderstorms in here for Friday before on and off rains take over into the weekend. This looks to be a soggy weekend that will see the return of much cooler air by late weekend into early next week.
– There is still a lot of cold air up in Canada and this means our active pattern will stay that way for the rest of the month. Periodic severe weather threats and a lot of rain should be common. This should also mean an active May.
– How does the summer look? I will have a sneak peak into the summer months with a post later this week.
Have a great Tuesday and take care.

Thanks for all your hard work Chris, It is really appreciated! Looking forward to that summer forecast, until summer gets here, looks as though we are going to have a good shot at some high water now through May, not to mention all the rounds of severe weather yet to come. I just hope we don’t end up in a drought situation, cause I was looking forward to having a lot of fresh veggies from the garden this year. Everyone stay safe and watch out for the rising waters.
We have had some pretty heavy rain and very gusty winds here in northwest Lex. I’ve heard some thunder too.
Thanks,Chris. Appeciate all the info on strong storms- I can prepare my students for them so they aren’t surprised, and we lose less classroom time!
I would say the KY river will be coming up a lot tonight and tomorrow. Mesonet sites along the river have recorded over 3” of rain and it’s still coming down hard. If i recall correctly, last May when the river flooded, we had seen about 4-5” of rain on the basin. Could be wrong…but I think that’s about what we got. And it resulted in a top-5 flood here at Frankfort. This could get interesting tomorrow.
not an advisory, watch, or warming for Lewis Co., KY and the water is over roads in many places this morning–and still raining.
The flooding is really being downplayed this morning. Many roads are covered throughout the Bluegrass, please be aware of your surroundings, the water is rising fast.
ILN must have heard your rant as a Flood Advisory was issued at 8:22 for Lewis, Mason and Robertson Counties until 2:15PM.
So tired of this rain, and it looks like on the radar it is hardly even moving.
Question:
This storm that is moving through; would this be the IDEAL storm track for a large snow in central KY had there been arctic air in place in the winter?
Those are the 2 things we never could get to come together this winter. Below freezing temps and moisture.
Any word on rainfall totals thus far in Lexington & surrounding area?
Looks like the Lexington-Lawrenceburg-Harrodsburg vicinity got a total of just over 4 inches of rainfall from this system. The KY River is projected to crest just below flood stage. The flooding is certainly going to be the biggest story with this system.
You are correct…went back and checked…..May 1st-May2nd…Frankfort area received 6.37 ” of rain….don’t recall the end of last April being as wey as the last couple of weeks have been…flooding may be a big issue….
A little under 4″ here in Valley Station (Louisville) at 3.83″.
Ohio river on the rise, expected to crest a little above flood stage on Friday.
Remember, this Saturday is Thunder Over Louisville and the waterfront will most likely be submerged…
