Previous Update
Good Monday everyone. This has been a busy start to our severe storms season and that looks to continue today. For that reason… the Storm Tracker is back for some more action. We have the usual suspects lined up for you to track today’s storms and we will get to those in a bit.
We always like to give you a rundown of the storm threat and what to expect with the overall pattern before getting to the toys. Let’s break it down…
– A line of showers and thunderstorms will roll eastward across the state today. Ahead of the storms… sunshine should aid in the instability of the atmosphere giving us the threat for strong and severe boomers.
– Damaging winds and large hail will be the primary players with an isolated tornado being possible. Winds are also going to be very gusty outside of thunderstorms.
– Heavy rainfall is likely with this line.
– As the cold front sweeps through tonight… a wave of low pressure will develop along it. This should keep showers going into Tuesday across the east. Temps Tuesday will be on the cool to chilly side of things.
– Temps will bounce back for the middle and end of the week as readings head back toward 70 for a few days.
– A big, slow moving storm system will move our way from Friday through the weekend. This is likely to bring a period of nasty weather that starts with strong or severe storms… goes through some general heavy rains… then tries to end as something we do not speak of this time of year. Some very chilly air is likely to dive in as the low exits.
– The atmosphere is jacked up right now and continues to be in super charged mode. That looks to continue through the rest of the month. Frequent rounds of severe storms and a lot of rainfall will continue to be likely.
Back to the subject at hand… today’s severe storms threat. Here are your tracking tools…

Thanks for the update Chris. Wow. More thunder boomers. Everyone take care and have a great day!
How will this compare to the Saturday storms and will the severe threat diminish when the initial line of storms pass to our east?
thanks for the update, Chris. Looking at the radar and it looks like it is going to be an interesting day, for sure. Not looking fore=ward to the cool down, as I like the warm weather, but, I also know that we have several mini “winters’ to get through first.
Keeping an eye on it today. Thanks for all the tweets and updates! I figure we will be getting several today…
I think if anybody gets severe weather at all, it’ll be eastern KY. Most of us will just see rainy/showery weather today which will just be a killer for outdoor plans. But, April showers bring May flowers..right?
SPC says tornado watch likely from Lex, south, southwest.
Looks like central KY may get some severe action mid day today. I read one of your post pre spring saying this spring will not be to active. Your thoughts now? Opposite of what I posted a day earlier. I said very active spring season.
Are you originally from a coastal region? “Eyewall” is not a typical mid west handle. I’m from Biloxi, MS. Been in Lou since 95
Good morning, Coffeelady,
Would this week be dogwood or red bud winter? I remember my grandfather telling us about there are 7 winters, but can only think of a few….blackberry, linen britches, dogwood, red bud. Do you know the others? Thanks.
I’m in Johnson County and wondering if this will be anywhere near as severe as Saturday? Hoping so see some good storms fire up later this afternoon. Will the severe threat diminish with when the initial line moves east of the area or will it continue?
Small world. I lived in Long Beach/Gulfport during the 80’s. Went through the eyewall of Elena in 85. Since then, I have had a knack for being in the wrong place at the right time for hurricanes. Was in Destin on vacation for Opal in 95. Later that year, I was on business in St. Thomas for Marilyn. I was in a hotel above Charlotte Amalie. Scariest thing ever. Got chased from the panhandle by Ivan. Had family that lost everything in Katrina and had to house them here in Lexington for over a year.
I don’t recall that. Can you post a link? Because I didn’t see the late March period being active…but April-June is a period I have always expected activity. In fact, I posted an article to the news a week or two ago highlighting the increased threat for severe weather this Spring. For today, severe is still very unlikely for the Bluegrass. I’ll stick to my thoughts there.
Yep, southern KY and most of middle TN is where the action will be today. central KY won’t see enough instability.
What about EKY?

Thanks 🙂
Not one single warning or damage report yet. Eastern KY in a new Tornado Watch now, so the threat still exists there. But so far, these storms have been pretty quiet as expected.
Here in Versilles we only got wind and heavy rain, no thunder or lightning here!
Sunny and 83 VOLATILE degrees in Barbourville. Looks like another stormy afternoon in store for us down here!!!
From the SPC’s latest meso discussion, it looks like what they are really concerned about is the second line.
Yeah looks like that 1st line gets weaker with each frame.. is it going to die completely out?
Geeze… It was in February sometime. I’ll find it, if needed. LOL! I agree to your post except that one. So, wanted to give you a little grief.
I was in Elena too. The day I moved to KY ( Oct 3, 95 ) Opal seemed to be heading to Biloxi as a cat 5. I was in Biloxi during Ivan watching power flashes all night. Parents lost 90% what they owned from Katrina. They live near the Tchoutacabouffa river off Ceder Lake Rd. It is a small world!!
Well its been another beautiful day here in se ky. Sunny and in the 80’s most of the day a gusty band of clouds blew thru about 3pm with slightly cooler air but nothing more than that. Now going on 6pm and its a beautiful spring day! Here in the south. SO FAR. LoL
blizzardtim, I’ve been watching that Accuweather radar all day. Talk about crawling eastward. Glad not to be in Paducah – looks like the storm finally moved out of there. However, if/when it does reach us, hopefully I’ll be safe and sound at home (currently in London).
Wxman you look like your so right. It looks like things are going to get ugly again here.I am tired of all this awful hail and winds and losing power, but I am not the one that calls it lol.
Also Wxman could you explain what causes the hail esp over and over Thanks?
Nancy her is a nice article and page about the winters.
