Good afternoon, everyone. A few flurries and snow showers continue to work across the state as cold winds blow from the northwest. This is kicking off another very active weather week, complete with snow, flooding rains and the potential for severe storms by the weekend.
Let’s begin with the Monday taste of winter. These hit and run snow showers can put down brief coatings in a few spots…
From there, it’s full steam ahead toward an impressive system moving in later Tuesday and Wednesday. This one may start as snow and a mix, but the main threat comes from the potential for too much rain. Here’s my current area of concern…
That matches up well with the placement from the GFS…
The NAM is farther west and northwest with the axis of heaviest rain…
General flooding and river flooding will be possible in the coming days.
As mentioned, this system may start out as some snow or a mix later Tuesday into Tuesday evening. The NAM Fam continues to be the most aggressive with the winter weather potential.
Hi Res Snowfall
Hi Res Freezing Rain
NAM Snowfall
NAM Freezing Rain
The GFS isn’t spitting out much freezing rain, but it is now showing a touch of snow…
So is the new version of the GFS…
As I mentioned earlier, this is likely to be a situation where we have a Winter Weather Advisory and a Flood Watch out at the same time for some areas.
I’m also focusing on the weekend setup that has the potential to produce more flooding rains and even some severe thunderstorms…
That has a severe weather look for much of this region.
Busy enough for ya? 🙂
I will have the latest on WKYT starting at 4pm and then have another KWC update this evening. Make it a good one and take care.
could a Flash Flood Watch be issued and will it be a WKYT FIRST ALERT SEVERE WEATHER DAY
Basically, the usual NW shift looks to save SE KY, well, at least for round 1. Not very impressive for SE KY but we are still wetter than the rest of the state and that will still play into the lower numbers, however.
NW shift when it comes to rain is definitely a bit of good news for us indeed. The bad news….it’s still gonna rain and we are already soaked
I saw a “.1” inch of snow on the map. That seems a bit ridiculous to me. If we received “.1” inches of snow no one would even know. I couldn’t even measure that 🙂
About an hour ago, I showed my daughter, who is 8 and home sick, the snow coming in from S. IN.(We’d had a few flurries-about 17 of ’em! 🙂 earlier) and she said, and I quote, “Ohh, please…once it hits the river, it’s done!” Looks like she’s right. (I was thinking the same thing, and this isn’t even the one child I claim as “mine”….LOL!)
Summary for this winter:
Big snow No
Big rain Yes
Still once again, the one good thing is the longest trend of no big ice storm in over fifty years. That is better than nothing 🙂
And all the nasty road salt gets washed away. 😉
Hamlin you throwing in the towel for winter?
Rain has become a four letter word in my book.
Russell has been saying RIP since mid December … I want him to fill out my NCAA brackets, and give me his derby picks, he nailed it
Thanks Jim B you know I’ll do my best 😉
I called it as I saw it…..some here didnt like me saying so but they’ll just have to get over it. We just cant seem to escape the rain train and any cold temps dont hang around long enough….thus I have maintained my RIP WINTER….opps did I say that?
Even Vegas has gotten more snow than we have…
Even Seattle has gotten more.
Louisville even beat Seattle last year in RAIN. Imagine that.
Crazy Weather man
Wow. More heavy snow for the summits of Hawaii…5-10″ expected.
My fishing gear keeps bugging me every day about going out. I tried to explain the rain situation with high lake and river levels but they don’t understand. They are getting very restless.
