Good Saturday, folks. Our low-end Winter Storm THREAT for Sunday continues across parts of the bluegrass state. This is for possibility of a narrow stripe of snows that can reach 4″ in a few spots. Frigid temps will then follow this system into the first full week of March.
Here are some random musings about this setup:
- The track of this system is pretty much set and it will be fairly far south of the bluegrass state.
- Our storm isn’t the strongest in the world and will be moving at a pretty good clip.
- To the south of this low, severe thunderstorms are likely to develop across parts of the deep south. Those storms can disrupt the northward transport of moisture into the colder air. That acts to limit precipitation totals.
- If those thunderstorms across the deep south don’t flare up, then our snow numbers could overperform.
- The swath of snow working across the state is likely to have some lighter holes in it. When and where those show up is always a tough call.
Here’s the First Call For Snowfall…
Notice the bullet points in the top right corner of the map. I don’t expect this to be a consistent swath of snow with some low spots and a few hot spots. I’ve highlighted an area of eastern Kentucky as having the best chance for some of those hot spots to show up. That’s where our storm system comes together a little better after losing those southern thunderstorms.
I will have additional updates to the map later today.
I suspect we will see Winter Weather Advisories and possibly a Winter Storm Watch go up for many areas…
Behind all this comes frigid temps for the first week of March. Another system then tries to move in here with snow or a mix of snow and rain by Thursday and Friday. Once again, #teamspring ain’t happy about any of this.
Have a good one and take care.
Wow….then after this snow or a mix and….wait for it……
I’m expecting a cold rain with a dusting at the end as the moisture pulls away here in Northeast Pike County. Hoping for a surprise though with a few inches of snow.
Kentucky has honestly become one of the most boring places to live in regards to snowfall.
Anything that can go wrong here to shut off a big snowfall, will indeed go wrong. Thanks Chaos Theory!
Even the most enthusiastic meteorologists aren’t themselves anymore. I’m not referring to just CB either.
The snow train left this region 3 winters ago.
Will it ever be back??
I remember back in the day when a snowstorm was coming it pretty much did. Nowadays this has to line up with that and that has to line up with this and if that doesn’t line up with this then this will not happen causing that not to come into fruition. I’m not sure if this and that in order to get this is Chaos Theory or this is Mother Nature’s version of Who’s On Second?
Excuse me I meant Who’s On First, I’m just as confused as a snowstorm would be hitting Kentucky.
I agree wholeheartedly. Ky has just turned into a rain oasis in the middle of a snow desert.
March as had it’s fair share of record snowfalls, at least for Louisville. March 11th, 1887, had 10.0 inches of snow. March 22, 1968, had 16 inches and 10 inches on March 5, 2015. I remember snow in May back in the mid to late 80’s. I was at the Derby in the infield during that time frame and it was sleeting. Bring on Spring!!
Iv’e looked at the most recent national radar and the low pressure has not formed except for a clipper system in the great state of Nebraska. Hopefully it will combine with energy from the Gulf of Mexico and give all a major snowstorm tomorrow. Just thinking positive for all the snow lovers out there.
Like the positivity, but unfortunately in reality for the snow lovers it ain’t gonna happen this storm is not the trend buster.
Looks like less than two inches for the state overall. Not even seeing any hint of an advisory, yet alone storm watch yet.
Thanks Chris. I know one thing for sure…. if we get put in a winter weather advisory, we won’t see the first flake, even though you are calling for an inch or less here anyway. Every time we get one, nothing happens . So at this late date, never mind! #teamsprimg. Have a great Saturday all.
Hopefully we can move on to spring after yet another winter rain. No worse forecast than one that includes the word mix. The misery should be over after next week. Can’t wait for warmer days
Like I said early in the week, when those ridiculous early models show any green, change the screen, bout the only thing you can take away from those things, shows the atmosphere is not right for a good snow…anyone on the trend train yet? Haha
Accuweather forecast for the tristate dropped from 3”-6” yesterday
evening to <1” now. So done with this crap…
Lol
It’s been like that all year. Amazing how bad the models have been this year for our part of the world. They can’t even get it right for snow even around nowcast time. We have had a couple of decent looking outlooks only hours before the storm and have ended up with basically nothing when it happens.
‘There is lies, and then there is d@mn lies, and then there is GFS snowfall ensembles.’
Well, I’m choosing to look on the bright side, even though no money was wagered, I’m definitely gonna win a bet with a couple of friends this year…that we wouldn’t break the inch of snow mark. It’s in the bag!!! lol
NAM not impressed. Perhaps advisory status for north. Otherwise up to 2″ nothing to write home about.
NAM was never impressed
