2:30pm Update
Good afternoon gang. This line of severe storms is racing eastward and will continue to produce widespread wind damage across central and eastern Kentucky. A few tornadoes are also possible over the next few hours.
We have received lots of damage and injury reports from western Kentucky and I expect more of the same for the rest of Kentucky before all is said and done. Please stay alert to the latest warnings and be prepared to seek shelter.
Take care
12:45PM Update

9:15am Update
Good morning everyone. Things are getting active in a hurry as watches are already out for western and parts of northern Kentucky.
A TORNADO WATCH is out until 4pm for the western half of the state. Here is a look at the watch and latest warnings…

A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is out until 1pm for far northern Kentucky…

I will have updates as needed. Take care.
PREVIOUS UPDATE
Good Monday everyone and welcome to an active weather day across the state. A strong cold front will blast through the region this evening and this front will likely produce a round of severe storms. We have set the blog up with your usual storm tracking tools.
Here is a breakdown…
– Scattered showers and storms will be possible early today across western and central Kentucky.
– A squall line of storms will come racing eastward across the state this afternoon into the evening. This will be the prime time for severe weather.
– Damaging winds will be the main threat with this line. Large hail and an isolated tornado will also be possible.
– In addition to the severe weather aspect… these storms will put down a lot of rain across central and eastern parts of the state. Up to 2″ will be possible in some areas.
– Regardless of thunderstorms… winds today into tonight will be a major player. Gusts can top 50mph at times.
Here are some tracking toys to help keep you ahead of the storms…

Radars for the entire state…

I will have blog updates as needed through the day and will send out updates through twitter. You can sign follow me here Kentuckyweather or follow along in the twitter feed on the right side of the blog.
Have a great Monday and take care.
Thank you. What would we do with out you??
I agree with you Crystal.
Thank you for the update Chris. I’ll be glued here this evening. Thanks for being here for us.
At this hour, I crunched a few numbers from the SPC and am not that impressed with severe weather likelihood for Louisville. Better chance south and east of Louisville. Damaging wind primary threat.
We may have a little bit of a cap around 800mb, but otherwise everything looks great for severe wx. Shear is more impressive this time around too. If we get breaks in this cloud deck it’ll just fan the fire..but I think we see severe today regardless.
Thanks, Chris. Looks like a ot of you “weather guys” are in for a very busy Monday across the region! I appreciate ALL of you! (And our blog friends who do weather, too). Everyone keep an eye and ear on the weather today, and stay safe!
Thank you MS and WXman.
Hope to see some action later today 🙂
Tornado Watch issued for areas west of I-65 until 4pm Eastern.
I am now running a live blog for those interested.
Dark clouds have moved in over London. It already looks pretty ominous outside.
SPC has extended the 30% risk of severe storms northward.
*severe winds.
Strong winds out there… Sunny though, I believe this will help support thunderstorm development today…
Really dark overcast clouds here in Breathitt Co. Will it be like this all day or will the sun break out before the storms?
The latest soundings show an even stronger cap at around 800mb. This is keeping storms from blowing up in the Bluegrass this morning. The interesting thing is… I believe that may actually be an aid to the main batch of weather this afternoon and could increase the severity of the storms we see later.
Any thoughts on latest tornado watch??
I think severe storms should be limited especially tornadoes. By the time storms reach the I-65 corridor, should be a damaging wind threat by 2pm.
I’ll be paying attention to the warnings out west and see if any storm reports reach actual severe status…
I’m nervous about this afternoon. I hope we all stay safe.
Let me adjust my last statement…I think the tornado watch that includes most of west KY is unwarranted. I do think eventually a tornado threat could exist across TN and MS
Louisville Metro will not see much as storms will weaken as they approach. Storms will re-generate eastward this afternoon. Just my thoughts.
WRONG, to much juice in the air sir, and this line out west has develop this morning, at 6 or so nothing like that was developed to iour west.
Does McCreary Co. look to have any storms this evening? I’m not the best at interpreting/reading data like the rest of you! 🙂
My opinion is that due to the cap we have in place, and due to the sunshine central KY has seen early this morning, there will be an intense area of storms in central KY this afternoon. I think we’ll see scattered wind damage and a couple of tornadoes. There are already hail reports coming from western KY so hail is likely here too. Freezing level is only 12K feet so some hail could be large. I’m betting on a tornado watch for the Bluegrass by lunchtime or shortly thereafter.
Very good point. That could hold off larger clouds, and give more time for instability to build.
By the way, WXman, you in lawrenceburg?
Yes they do.
Storm in Ohio county is intriguing.
Thanks, I appreciate your response.
what abt my area here in north east ky. We will be at the funeral home this evening and we are concerned abt the weather this evening. I am right on the boyd/grennup county line near ashland. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks
Tornado warning for Ballard Co.
What are the chances for tornadoes in EKY today? A few days ago they built it up considerably and now it doesn’t seem as likely…….what do you all think?
“A TORNADO AND DAMAGING WIND THREAT WILL INCREASE WITH THIS ACTIVITY AS IT DEVELOPS EWD INTO CNTRL KY THIS AFTERNOON.” -SPC update from a few mins. ago
I really think this may be another case of hype hype hype. Yeah there might be some severe weather but nothing to justify the hype. I have been hearing about this event for a week straight. Every met trying to hype it into some tornado outbreak. Not looking likely as usual
Where’s the like button when you need it? 😉
Could you all kindly help me here – my daughter will be driving from Lex to Cincy this afternoon to meet her fiance, who is flying in at 3:30. I am a nervous wreck about her driving alone! Can anyone please tell me what weather conditions will be like for her? Once he arrives, they are coming straight back to Lexington.
I SINCERELY appreciate your thoughts on this so much! Thank you.
Prayers for all who will be dealing with the severe weather today. May everyone be safe!
“these storms will put down a lot of rain across central and eastern parts of the state. Up to 2″ will be possible in some areas.”
Yep…radar appears to be bearing that out. And I forgot my umbrella. 🙁
Hope the activity is out of Cincinnati/NKY by 6pm.
I would get in the car and go now. Wait it out in NKY, then come back.
From SPC:
FARTHER N WRN/CNTRL KY…DESTABILIZATION WILL CONTINUE MAINLY DUE TO
ADVECTION WITH A GRADUAL INCREASE IN SEVERE THREAT. OBJECTIVE
ANALYSIS SHOWS DEEPENING EFFECTIVE PARCEL LAYER/SRH OVER WRN TN/KY
AS MID 60S F DEWPOINTS SPREAD NWD. A TORNADO AND DAMAGING WIND
THREAT WILL INCREASE WITH THIS ACTIVITY AS IT DEVELOPS EWD INTO
CNTRL KY THIS AFTERNOON.
gonna be VERY VOLUTALE in se ky…temps have soared to 76* here in Barbourville with sunny skies and very gusty winds…BEWARE OF SEVERE STORMS IN THIS AREA TODAY!!!
Same place as the dislike button 😉
10-4. Reside there anyhow. You?
Yup, it’s where I live.
LOL!!! Dislike for sure. It would be different if we were in the plains out west with miles and miles of UNPOPULATED areas. But severe storms in this area is almost a 100% gauantee of affecting someones life. SIGH! Unfortunate but true. Exciting but dangerous! Ahhh the love for weather.
Thank you so very much for your help!! I have talked to her and she is getting prepared to leave now. Thank YOU!!
Is the line about to impact Louisville THE line of concern or just the first of a few lines? The tornado watch is out ’til 7, but it seems like things will move through by 3. ???
Tornado Watch….central KY….valid until 23:00.
Funnel cloud reported near Dawson Springs in Western Kentucky.
Never mind. John Belski just answered my question on his blog–the tornado threat will pass with the line.
Honestly, I’m feeling like this is all HYPE and we’re not going to see anything significant in Louisville.
Correction…19:00 (7pm)
I’m visiting with family in Paducah right now. Had severe weather about an hour ago with tornado warning. Winds hit over 60mph, power outages in the area. On local TV they were showing a view from one of their weather cams. Lots of rain that was making it hard to see, but definitely a lowering, rotating cloud was in one corner of the screen. Couldn’t tell if it actually touched down. Damage in neighboring Ballard County.
71 here, overcast with a steady stiff breeze. That intense feeling before a good storm rolls in. Looks like we have a few hours before it gets serious around here. I’ll check back later to see what is headed our way.
LOOKS INTERESTING!!
I wish it would hurry up and pass so I can go to sleep. I’ve been up all night and I’m way to paranoid to go to bed.
I couldn’t have worded it better myself…..glad there are more out there that are fascinated with storms and weather in general 🙂
They are reporting some serious wall clouds in WKY and it says convection will increase into this evening as this thing bares east. Looks like its gonna get interesting today for Central and East KY. Watch out!
Yeah, good call. Only multiple tornado warnings, funnel clouds, and a possible touchdown in Ballard county.
Yeah, lots of structural damage, entrapment, and injuries reported. A child reported injured in Muhlenberg Co. This squall line is really packing a punch.
Just reported that on my blog. This squall line means business.
Thank you for all of your updates…..this whold weather community has really come to rely on you as well as the other weather experts on here 🙂
Thank you 🙂
Thank you as well, I appreciate all of the time you take to keep us all informed. As a weather nut, I feel like I am in good company here 🙂
Trust me, I am a SERIOUS weather nut!! 🙂
We are camping at The Horse Park. Getting a little bit ancy. We all have the weather radios on in the campers and I have the blog up and appreciate the updates. Please post any thoughts on this area if you get a chance. Thank you all so much for your dedication.
Wow. The mesonet is picking up .75″ of rain in 15 minutes with this line! Lots of lightning with this as well.
Damn. Get inside!!
wow, that is crazy. And, how about we all stay safe and inside away from the lightning with this one?
Any idea when this will be in the Lexington area? Thank you for all the updates!
3-5PM
Wxman, you ready?? 🙂
Thank you so very much! Think it’ll pack a punch?
The threat in the Louisville area has actually been fairly downplayed through the day. Don’t let facts get in the way, though!
The ‘numbers’ were there showing spin in the atmosphere. Although my comment about tornado watch being unwarranted for most of west KY was perhaps unwarranted, overall reports of tornadoes have not been confirmed. We will have to wait until NWS verification of these cells to determine that.
Nevertheless, damage has occurred from at least severe thunderstorm wind gusts over 60mph. My point was that tornado threat was not as likely as a severe storm threat. Given spin in the atmosphere, it is possible that something spun up and briefly touched down in western KY and perhaps now other areas That’s why we have all of these tornado warnings because of the spin in the atmosphere. Most not reaching the ground.
If you read my blog, I forecasted that much of severe weather would be primarily confined to the south and east of Louisville, east of I-65 and south of western KY parkway, which has occurred.
YUP! Severe T-storm Warning…Anderson Co… post what you see. I’m in Franklin Co. at the moment and can’t record the wind gusts remotely yet from my station at home.
I’ll post!!! 🙂
Rain bands have made it to the Horse Park. Lightning like crazy!!!
What time does it look like for the worst chances for severe stuff in McCreary County, please? Thank you! Long time reader but first time commenting today. This sure is a great group here!
Well, is it hardcore down there yet or not?? 😉
Not, it is actually quite boring. Nothing happened. The winds outside the storms were stronger than this.
Damage reported in Grayson, Bullitt, Butler and Logan Counties according to the NWS.
Is the tornado threat decreasing since EKY was put in a thunderstorm watch instead of tornado?
Very mild t shower here in nortwest Lex. Quite frankly, I’ve seen worse pulse pop up storms in the summer than this.
🙁 Looks like the energy went south through Harrodsburg. That always happens. Not fair.
@eyewall, Just to let you know that my daughter called to let us know that she made it safely to the airport! She is waiting for her fiance now and when he arrives, she will have him with her on the drive back, so that eases my worry somewhat. I just wanted to thank you again for your help with my question!
It is showing 80 on my weatherbug wonder if thats right? Wind is howling Wxman or anyone do you think we will get hit hard?
when will the snow arrive, how much will we get … are they issuing winter storm warnings ???
Just had a very intense squall come through in NichVegas, blinding rain and strong winds, hardest I’ve seen the wind blow in awhile. Still raining pretty good but winds have calmed.
The pros put that watch up for a reason. Making a comment like that could cause people to let their guard down. West KY got hammered and hopefully no one was killed. Nothing confirmed, but likely multiple touchdowns that did significant damage. Even if it was straight line damage people needed to be aware, not told that it wasn’t a big deal.
So disappointed that these storms seem to be weakening already before even getting to EKY….am I correct in saying that the tornado threat has diminished?
Well that warning was boring, but I guess that is o.k. Just heavy rain and wind for Nicholasville, in my area anyway. Not even thunder, bummer. But I would rather have it hyped up and nothing happen, than something major and not have a clue! :0)
I am wondering the same and hoping someone can tell us if its over or if it will strengthen again?
Very Dark here pouring the rain.We just got a severe Thunderstorm warning.
Yea
What’s up with the weakening at 3pm in the afternoon? I mean, that’s perfect time for storm energy….No?
80 DEGREES HERE WOW.
I know what you mean, wasn’t it suppose to get here at 5, it made it two hours early lol. I was hoping for a storm and got heavy rain instead lol 🙂
Mostly a rain event for Central KY it appears. Flooding rain perhaps at least two inches.
ANYBODY DIIAPOINYTED THAT A TORNADO AINTGOING HIT CAUSE OF WEAKENING OF A STORM IS A mMORON!!
lose a luved one in a storm and u bee sorry, KARMA A BITCH. I LOST ONE SO I KNOW.
Amen Rolo. Amen
Looks like the SPC extended the Moderate Risk area into Southeastern Kentucky.
Rolo I don’t think anyone is disappointed that we didnt have a tornado, I was just hoping for thunder to go with the rain. thats all
Bout dumb as a empty coal bucket…
Xenia Ohio, April 1974, do you have any idea how hard it is to help in the recovery of dead bodies of people you know?
I do.
Truthfully I love seeing severe weather and am very fascinated with it but I would NEVER want harm to come to anyone. Sorry but this is a weather board and I love learning from some of the very knowledgable people about all things weather. For the record I don’t want any harm to come to anyone on here. Sorry guys!
Bad storm just moved through. Heavy wind and rain, and reports of power lines down on some houses. No power on main drag of highway 27.
I think you speak for all of us weather enthusiasts there!!!! 🙂
Having a pretty instense storm right now at Whick in SW Breathitt Co. I measured the strongest wind gust at 68mph, no hail but plently of driving rain and lightning. Wind has died down but still raining moderately with lots of thunder. This is the strongest storm we have had at my location so far in 2011. Electric still on….. pray that it stays on.
sorry, memories are tough.
didn’t mean to upset anyone.
I love weather as much as you all do, and I think you all are wonderful.
Tornados are scary, and dangerous, and deadly. Love you all.
you actually want a CAP in many cases this was one of them. The trick just the right amount of CIN.
While going through this post I felt that you have done a lot of research on the topic, I appreciate your efforts and glad that I found your blog. Keep posting such informative content.
