Good Thursday afternoon everyone. A SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WATCH is now out for most of eastern Kentucky until 7pm. Damaging winds and large hail are the main threats with the storms that blow up this afternoon into the evening.
Here’s a look at the watch outline and the current warnings…
Here’s your regional radar to track the action as it develops…

I will have updates as needed and will send out warnings via twitter. Follow me @kentuckyweather .
Have a great afternoon and take care.

So sick of this LONG stretch of heat and no storms. For my area, we had that one storm the other night (better than nothing) and it didn’t last very long. That’s been it. This heat can cause the storms that do go up to be nasty!!! The one that came through here the other night didn’t look that bad on radar at all, but it was FULL of wind and intense lightening and a wall of rain.
Well lets see which way it goes to miss us this time
I was just thinking the same thing…
Decent hail storm hit here on the Morgan/Wolfe line about 15 minutes ago lasted about 10 minutes with lots of pea sized and marble sized hail. Raining now.
Models today for the first time are encouraging that some drought denting rains may occur next week with a front stalling out. Models tend to overdo movement of frontal systems south in the extended during the summer season thus just today seeing that it may stall. Would be not surprised if this front leads to several days of rain and storms next week. However still I would only put this in the chance category right now. Monday is the best bet for rain.
My little piece of Bourbon County is getting rain again. 🙂
I looked at the Defender and there was nothing in my area. Everything is east or south. It started raining so I looked again. There is a tiny green/yellow blob right on my house. It is forming here and moving south. I am east of Paris and just west of North Middletown.
In other good news, my friend in Cambridge, Ohio, finally got her power back on after the derecho Friday. Her entire town looks like a war zone and some people won’t get power until the END of July.
well dissapointed in WKYT as they are letting WTVQ kill them lately and TODAY on bad weather coverage. WTVQ been on alot in last hour as lex18 and WKYT are asleep as far as LIVE coverage goes.
hmm ohh lets watch THE TALK while some people COULD be in danger.
Is Bill Meck hacking your computer or something?
reverse bow echo on the radar ?
and a wall at HWY 80 …lol..so far nothing has made it any further south.. I watched an individual storm cell over clay county( that was headed right for me)split and fall apart..I sure hope that line of storms will bring liquid GOLD to southern ky…
It’s either feast or famine. Amazing to watch some areas repeatedly pounded and others (mine included) dry as a desert.
Yup been a month since we have had any rain
Me too. It’s skirted right around me and went to Boyle Co.
FINALLY !!!! first measureable rain in over a month !! and I’ve almost got 2″ of rain and its still coming down in buckets….
Good for you (and Knox County). Kind of like what Bowling Green got on Sunday. Hope there isn’t too much damage/flash flooding/power failures.
Sure wish Nashville could get some of this love (officially only .29 inch rain since June 1st) 🙁
LOOK AT THE RADAR. If that doesn;t prove there is a DOME over the LEX area, I don’t know what does, LOL. It shows at least light rain for all of Fayette Co, yet, not even a sprinkle….the verticle column of air must be super-dry….
Did you guys not get dumped on recently i think so hence no dome for you:-P
Nope, not the Nicholasville area. We missed the rain that hit parts of Lexington on Tuesday night, and it was only “parts” of Lexington that got the rain.
Sounds like what happened here
As usual, radar is very misleading. Parts of Laurel county picked up very heavy rain. However, about 3 miles southwest of London, we picked up just some light rain, but very gusty winds. A few tree branches down, but no real relief in regards to rain. Despite this, the radar shows a very intense band of rain over my house, not so. Reminds me of the dry thunderstorms they have so often in the Rocky Mountain states
Russ…we are getting a pounding here in Barbourville…very, very heavy rain, wind damage! and 2″ of rain!! and its still coming down…first time in over a month my yard has seen measureable rain!!!….
Good deal. We got a good soaking rain after the gusty winds came through. Probably a good 0.5 inch of rain so far and a decent shield of very light rain to work through. The guys at NWS in Jackson are saying we may have another MCS move through after midnight.
According to the radar, looks like we should be getting rain in Jessamine County. Not a drop at my house, but at least the cloud cover is keeping the temperature down a few degrees.
Is seems strange to me to get hail is late in the year. Shouldn’t the higher levels of the atmosphere be getting too warm by now?
it can hail anytime jan-Dec…
True. Just last year, south Florida had a damaging hailstorm – in June:

one heck of lighting show and 1/4″ hail in south east owen county.
I just got back from Huntington, W.VA. where there was a lot of damage from the other day. A lot of people still don’t have power. My sister who lives in Hurricane just got hers back on yesterday. I hadn’t been home long when a storm came through here (Hazard area). Lots of lightening, heavy rain and some hail. Shew. I need some sleep now. 🙂
We here in Nicholasville have received almost nothing the last couple of days just enough to make concrete wet then dry in 2 minutes! DRY
Derecho in the making coming down out of Ohio?
