Good Sunday everyone and welcome to the first day of spring. We are coming off a very nice Saturday across the entire region and our Sunday isn’t shaping up to be too bad as a blast of big spring warmth surges in. This will carry us into the first part of the new week before a change to chilly takes control of the overall weather pattern. ![]()
A warm front is lifting northward through the area today and will touch off a scattered shower or thunderstorm. Track any storm action here…
Temps today will really soar with highs in the west and southwest heading into the middle and upper 70s. Areas farther north and east will be a little more tricky because of a better chance for some boomers. Areas with some rain will see temps only in the low to mid 60s. For those with sun… 70 will be possible.
Monday into Tuesday will see some very warm air nudging into the entire region. Highs will head toward the low and mid 70s for many areas. 80 in the west? There will be a chance for some scattered thunderstorms during this time… especially in the north and east.
A nice storm will develop in the plains states on Tuesday and roll across the Ohio Valley by Wednesday. This will increase our rain and thunderstorm threat and may even bring some strong or severe storms in here. That is something we will be watching for in the coming days as this system has a heck of a temp gradient to work with.
As this low passes by… a very chilly pattern will engulf much of the eastern half of the country for the end of the week. Here is how the European Model sees it…
That is some big time cold air heading into the Great Lakes and Northeast. While we won’t get in on the heart of the cold… it will be plenty chilly enough with highs coming back down into the 40s. As a matter of fact… I would not be surprised to see some snowflakes with this air.
If you are thinking this cold will be in and out of here… think again. The extended models all have a chilly look into early April. You can see that on the GFS Ensembles…
Severe weather hounds… get ready. I continue to think this pattern will lead us into a very stormy spring and early Summer that is likely to feature above average severe weather from the plains into the Ohio Valley.
Have a great Sunday and happy spring. Take care.

I don’t like the GFS chilly weather!! Now, the early spring sounds just find to me!!! THanks Chris!! GO Cat’s and Hoops!!!
Hoping we don’t get an extended freeze like April 2007.
Congrats to Christian County Boys Sweet 16 Champs!
Chilly weather is expected just as long as it is short lived. Thanks for your dedication to this blog Chris. It’s the first weather site I visit every morning.
Thank you Chris, you are awesome. Even though I don’t post very often, I have read your blog and followed you since the beginning.
I really hope we don’t get the strong severe weather season like you think, I am NOT a fan of severe weather at all, mainly because of my wife’s extreme fear of the storms.
We have lived through some very rough ones in the last 10 years. Now a days, when severe weather threatens I tend to cower in my basement with my dogs and my wife 🙂
Thanks again for all you do.
Hmmm… could we possibly see a severe outbreak like this…..

or this

Only on that last one: the reports just don’t make a triangle over central KY!!! 🙂
i vote for neither
Why? Severe weather is so extreme and awesome. The damage isn’t awesome, but the actual severe stuff is very fun. But that is my opinion.
Anyone know whats up with the mesonet?
I hope that cold air stays away, forecast high for Frankfort today 60, it is already 74. 🙂
I agree, it fascinates me. I really think all weather fascinates me but especially storms…..one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen is a water spout forming and dividing into three separate other water spouts in the Bahamas…..that was awesome! I’m just glad there are others out there like me lol!
That would be awesome!! And trust me, there are more out there than just me. 🙂
ready to sit on the porch and watch some good storms roll in, but we don’t need a chill for that. Ready for a warm up and some good golf weather. Really need to dry out a bit, let the rivers settle down!
just a heads up Newark could have a decent winter storm wed-thu for anyone traveling there for the CATS. squall line a good bet wednesday afternoon here.
