Good afternoon, folks. Our arctic front continues to race into the region, bringing a major drop in temps, with the first light snowfall of the cold weather season behind it. This won’t be a lot of snow, but it’s not bad considering it’s the first one and it’s coming in early November.
A Winter Weather Advisory is out for much of Kentucky, but the NWS decided to skip several counties for some strange reason. How is anyone supposed to convey a consistent public message with this kind of a map?
Hopefully, they do the right thing and include the entire state in the advisory. This isn’t a monster event by any means, but it’s the first of the season, its happening as arctic air surges in, freezing up some roads and it’s still only early November. Plus, low end events seem to bring about some of the worst in road conditions.
I’ve also talked about the plume of snow showers coming from Lake Michigan early Tuesday. The GFS shows this perfectly…
I’m going to continue to roll with the First Call map with a general coating-2″ for the entire region…
Slick roads may develop as temps crash below freezing. This will likely lead to some delays and cancellations on Tuesday.
I will have the latest on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm and with another update here on KWC this evening. With the first of many times this upcoming winter, I leave you with the infamous winter weather tracking toys…

Still enjoying the 60’s for a little bit longer. Low to mid 40’s just west of me.
Perhaps residents not yet in the advisory could tune in here or some of their favorite media source for weather besides the NWS as this surprise storm that’s been talked about for at least 8 days is about to arrive.
Looks like Hamlin and Bubba just got added to the WWA for Madison county.
Be surprised with any accumulation in my area. Temp just hit 69 at house at 2:00pm. With 70 not out of the question.
Sending snow wishes your way! I hope we both get at least an inch but the speed of the cold vs. the precip exiting the region will be crucial! At least it is a nighttime event and that greatly works in our favor given how warm and early season it is!
According to Rapid Refresh short term family, snow depth will be far less than accumulation. The winner may be far west Kentucky
If snow falls quickly and with enough intensity, it can stick to the ground even if it was 90 degrees the day before. People often give a warm ground too much credit.
Folks out in the desert west know better than to say the snow won’t stick because the ground is too warm.
I drive 30 mi to work in Mt. Vernon and am hoping for decent conditions.
I am so hoping it is a winter like the wholly worms are showing!
Snow snow snow!!!!
Are those the worms that you see in Church? Lol.
No, that would be HOLY worms.
Wholly worms are worms completely giving of themselves to winter!
Looks like sharp cut off at Ohio River on current Radar not much out west to worry about. Might not even be salt worthy.
Future radar showsi it filling in nicely
Figuring the Huntington area will miss out, as usual.
Don’t give up. It’s not even here yet.
NWS in Morristown mentioning the dreaded warm nose showing up on the Nam and Gfs..Know they don’t cover our area but you can bet if there’s a warm nose close by it will find it’s way into S.E. KY..
And it usually makes it’s way up into western WV too.
I am wondering which area gets left out the most or predicted to being left according to posts… We do know, after all, the weather has favorites.
*Will it be the tri-sate”? (I still haven’t figured out which tri-state they are referencing – KY has seven of them. I looked at a map and counted them.)
*Will it be Harlen?
*Will it be Knox County
*Will it be “my part of Richmond”?
*Will it be South Central KY?
I will follow the comments to see.
The one I am referencing is the Kentucky/Ohio/West Virginia area. Usually takes a special/rare storm to overcome the warm wedge. Few examples were the two late storms in 2015 and the big January storm of 2016. Since then virtually nothing.
I am 30 miles of N. Carbondale IL. on I – 57.
I have not moved in thirty minutes.
Waze App has no ideal what I s going on.
Just saying it was 78 degrees one day not long ago in Denver . Next day in 20’s and 8 inches of snow. If temps drop and there is a flash freeze like they say snow will stick easily.
Exactly.
Anyone getting “virga”ed on yet? (Looking good in far west KY.)
