Good Thursday everyone. Mother nature is about to take a walk on the wild side over the next few days with a little bit of everything likely across the eastern half of the state. From heavy rain to a slushy snowfall… we have you covered.
It all starts with a cold front crossing the region early today as a wave of low pressure develops along it. This will prompt additional rains to break out across central and eastern Kentucky with locally heavy rain the farther east you live. Some areas of eastern Ky may pick up an additional half to one inch of rain through early afternoon and this may cause some local high water issues.
As the low pressure rides up the eastern slopes of the Appalachian Mountains this afternoon into this evening… colder air will surge in changing the rain over to snow. That change to snow will take place this afternoon in the higher elevations in the east. By mid to late evening…. a band of wet snow will take control and slowly lift northeastward into early Friday.
This is a fairly dynamic setup that can put down accumulating wet snows tonight for much eastern Kentucky. We do have a warm and wet ground and temps will only make it to around freezing by early Friday morning… this will work against the accumulations. That said… the snow may fall fast enough to stick… especially on grassy and elevated surfaces.
Here is my first call…
I am really going to keep an eye on the higher elevations in the southeast as there is a chance the snows can pile up a lot more than I am currently showing. I will update the snow map again later today so make sure to check back.
Lingering snows in the east will pull away early Friday as temps remain in the 30s for highs. Elsewhere… skies will become partly sunny with readings warming well into the 40s.
Another fast moving system dives in over the weekend. Ahead of it… temps should spike into the 50s. A quick burst of showers or a rumble of thunder will be possible on Saturday as much colder air moves in. The weekend looks to be on the chilly side.
We will also have to watch another storm system into the early part of next week.
As of now… it’s all eyes on the potential for heavy rain going over to wet snow and you can track all the action here…

I will have another update coming later today so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

While going through this post I felt that you have done a lot of research on the topic, I appreciate your efforts and glad that I found your blog. Keep posting such informative content.
I was looking back at historical crests of the Ohio River at Cincinnati, as well as looking to see how much rain we got at CVG yesterday. Although we had 1.32″ yesterday, the record rainfall for March 9th is 5.21″ in 1964 and that led to a crest on the river of 66.2 feet on March 11, 1964. The river at Cincinnati has not been that high since (although it came within 2 feet in 1997).
Imagine how much snow 5.21″ of liquid would produce…heh.

Thanks, Chris. I really hope you miss the snow part. It is too close to spring now to have snow. I, like you, am now in spring mode, and am ready for some sunshine, and warmer temps.
that being said, I am wearing a heavy sweater today, in anticipation of the
falling temps! Stay safe, everyone!

March 19th:
-Moon will be full
-Moon will be at perigee (closest to Earth that it gets)
-Moon will rise about 30 minutes after sunset
All this is perfect for viewing the largest moon you’ll ever see with the naked eye from Kentucky. Let’s pray that the weather is clear that weekend. Please please let it be clear!
