Good Tuesday everyone and thanks for dropping by the blog. The old saying “here we go again” is certainly appropriate when describing the weather around here as another heavy rain maker moves in. This will be the fourth storm to bring significant rains to our region in the past two weeks and could cause more high water concerns.
A strong low pressure will move out of the plains today and toward the Great Lakes later tonight and Wednesday. This will drag a cold front into through the region later Wednesday and it will have a lot of juice to work with. Heavy rain will develop this afternoon and evening in western Kentucky and will roll eastward overnight into the first half of tomorrow. Some rumbles of thunder will be possible during this time.
We may see a break in the action during the afternoon hours and this may allow for a line of thunderstorms to develop right along the front moving in. There is the chance for some strong storms and that is something we will keep an eye on.
As the front moves into eastern Kentucky early Thursday… a wave of low pressure will try to develop along it and bring another round of heavy rains across the east. Some showers would then linger into Thursday and Thursday night and these may be in snow form as colder air moves in.
Here is how much rain I am expecting to fall over the next few days…
With the soaked ground and swollen streams and rivers… we will have to be on guard for more high water… especially in the east. Flood Watches are already out for much of the region and a big kudos to the NWS folks for getting those out well ahead of the game.
You can track the first wave of rain in from the west…
On a related note… today is the statewide tornado drill for Kentucky. This will take place at 10:07am EST. This is always a good time to review your severe weather safety plans.
I will have more updates coming later today so be sure to check back. Have a great Tuesday and take care.

u smell; that??? a MARCH SNOWSTORM??? SNIFF,SNIFF…..
For those of you that know how to analyze the models.. Do you see any more of these Big rain makers in the next week or two?? Or will we get a break after this one? TIA
Rolo, do you think we’ll have more snow this year?
what??? smoke another one and go back to bed 🙂
Looks like our snowstorms were done for as of the end of February. It’s been all Spring since then and there is more rain to come this month. A few more systems are showing up in the modeling for next week and this might continue into the middle of March as well. I’m loving the warmer temps though.
Amen miss kate
Thanks, Chris. I have still not seen the graphic on the counties in the flash flood watch. Can someone help me out with this? Everyone be careful out there as the rains move in. Have a great day!
Most of the seasonal models keep us in weak La Nina or neutral conditions even into Summer. This could possibly play a role in a very active weather pattern continuing in the southeast. Winter has been wild…Spring could be too.
Lunar Perigee on March 19th. Good chance for a big weather event.
While going through this post I felt that you have done a lot of research on the topic, I appreciate your efforts and glad that I found your blog. Keep posting such informative content.
