Good Friday everyone and welcome to be what promises to be a soggy weekend. Another big rain maker is on the way to much of the eastern half of the country with our region right in the middle of it… again! This will increase the potential for the third high water event in the past ten days. This storm system, unlike the others, may have a wintry twist to it as it pulls away on Sunday.
One low pressure will head toward the Great Lakes later today and this will drag a cold front into the state on Saturday. This front will have widespread rains and some possible thundershowers along it as it slowly works eastward. As it does so… a second low will develop along the front increasing the rain potential. When I say this will be a widespread heavy rain maker… I mean it…
An additional 1″-2″ will fall across much of the state with a local 3″ being possible. With a saturated ground and streams still running pretty full after all the rains of late… high water will again be a concern into the weekend. This will also add more water into our already swollen rivers leading to additional rises in the coming days.
The action will get started today for some as a few showers break out. The best chance will be in the west and north and you can follow the rains here…
Highs today will spike up toward the low 60s in the east with readings a smidge cooler in the north and west as those areas have the best rain chances.
Saturday temps will generally be held in the 50s due to the widespread rains. Much colder air will then surge in from west to east Saturday night into Sunday. There is a good chance some areas see a few flakes of snow as the rains push out. Odds of seeing these flakes will be higher the farther east you go on Sunday.
The NAM model is trying to develop another wave of low pressure on the front as it moves into the eastern slopes of the appalachian mountains Sunday. While I am not buying that solution… let’s take a look at the snowfall forecast from the NAM…
That is for entertainment purposes only and I do NOT think that is going to happen.
The storm train doesn’t look to stop anytime soon as another system moves our way by Wednesday and Thursday. This will likely bring another widespread heavy rain event with thunderstorms. Much colder air will then filter in behind it for the end of the week. Never a dull moment in weatherland!
I will update as needed so check back. Have a great Friday and take care.

All I gotta say about that is here we go again! I don’t know about you, but I’m gettin’ pretty sick of it!!!
Im so tired of this rain.
I am so done with rain. Really. I am.
Rain beginning here in Frankfort…just sprinkles for now.
I just want to say thanks for this blog year-round. It seems like a lot of people hop on here only for the winter. Hopefully, it only just seems that way, as this blog is the best weather resource no matter what the season. I read every day, not just when a storm’s coming. You’re doing a great job.
I agree. New to being a reader here, but will certainly continue no matter what the season.
I don’t enjoy this rain as well. I do, however, enjoy severe weather, which has rain inside itself.
These series of storms are pretty much a slap in the face for all the snow lovers who wanted this pattern to set up over the Ohio Valley all winter, to no avail. Bottom line, we all know, the lower valley is a miserable place to live if you crave big winter storms every year! I know Chris thinks we haven’t seen the last of accumulating snows. But, really, it’s too late in the season now for anything to really amount to much. I suppose we can all go with the Cubs famous slogan “wait til next year!” Ha…
lol.
Seriously though, March 7-8 2008, March 1996, March 1993. It’s possible…
Oh, I do remember 2008. So, its always possible. I’m usually the optomist. This winter had so much potential…just never got its act together over our area. Snow lovers were not treated to the events we all became envious of in the North, East, and even South! So, our consolation prize?? HMM….FLOODS! woo hoo…ugh =-(
The Kentucky River is already way up, another couple of shots of heavy rain and it may be bad.
Yup, cold enough temps and adequate moisture never seem to meet up around here in the winter. Seeing every state surrounding KY getting in on at least one good snow this winter got very depressing. I’m ready for spring.
Thanks, Chris. Appreciate the heads up. Guess I will try to do whatever running around I have or need to do this afternoon, as I plan to just stay home tomorrow. I’ve been out in the rain the past two storms, working. Tomorrow, I am hoping to stay inside and dry! (And HOPING for a UK win over UT!)
It only got to 22 ft. in Frankfort. Flood stage is 31 ft. We’re going to need a lot more rain than just 2 inches at a time to put this puppy out of it’s bank.
I haven’t been paying attention to the numbers, but it is def way up. I doubt this next system will do it, which is why I said another couple of shots of heavy rain.
I just hope it doesn’t get as bad as last year.
