Good evening gang. A TORNADO WATCH is now out until 11pm eastern time for much of south central Kentucky. Here is a look at the watch outline and the latest warnings…
Severe thunderstorms are developing rapidly from central Tennessee into Kentucky. The atmosphere is primed for damaging winds and hail along with the possibility of tornadoes.
This is only the first round of severe storms as the main action won’t arrive until later tonight and early Monday.
Track the storms here…
I will have updates as needed and will also use twitter for rapid fire updates and to send out the latest warnings. I may also take the blog live at some point this evening. Take care.

Thanks Chief
Thanks Chris! Think it’s going to be a long night. Darkness + tornadoes = bad news. :o)
In Nicholas Co., KY at 6:00 nice little storm produced pea size hail and the first lightning/thunder of the season sounded pretty nice for a change… and to whoever posted the SevereStudios website, THANKS!!!
no severe storms now, don’t forget chris there is still a cap over much of region. the one supercell in TN has gotten into the cap zone and died.

Going to be a wild overnight ride!
What does the cap mean and where is it?
It’s been a while since ive seen the meteorology world this worried about a severe weather event.. I sure hope its not as bad as everyone is making it out to be, sounds like loss of life and millions in damage is about to occur..
It’s rumbling thunder in Madison County right now.

It’s going to be a wild ride over night. I plan on staying up and monitoring as this system moves through the state. Turn on your weather radios tonight!!!
Thunder, lightening and rain in Irvine.
So I was looking at the National Radar…And Quincy Illinois’ temp was 37 and a severe T storm warning……
How odd……..To have a severe T storm with temps in the 30s?
The term cap or capping inversion is where you get a little bit of a warm layer aloft which acts like a lid keeping thunderstorms from developing vertically.
I am not looking forward to all this bad weather. I see myself not sleeping good tonight. I will probably be checking the radar on my phone a 100 times tomorrow. Everyone stay safe.
Looks like the tornado watch has been cancelled. (the one for south central ky anyway.)
Will more storms come back late this evening or wee hours? Anyone have a timeframe for when the worst of the weather’s supposed to be here tomorrow?
From what I can tell from the radar, the tornado in Illnois looks like its been on the ground at least 45 min. But i’m not a weather specialist. But a 6/10 chance sounds pretty bad.
I was surprised by the Watch as the main energy was still far west. I guessed the SPC just jumped the gun. I would think they should be issuing a Watch for Arkansas and parts of SE Missouri and NW Tennessee soon.
It’s going to be just before dawn when the main show arrives. Things will be getting increasingly interesting as the night unfolds. I anticipate many Tornado Watches from SPC throughout the night and morning tomorrow.
Will the worst of the storms that are in the west as of now be as severe rolling into EKY?
Chelle- I saw on the earlier thread that you were asking about text alerts. I use one called Emergency Email & Wireless Network at http://www.emergencyemail.org. I found it from a list of serves at the NWS. It is free and you can register an email and/or cell phone.
To use the text option, you have to enter the email for your cell phone. For example, if you have AT&T it is yournumber@txt.att.net.
It is a little “commercial,” but it is free.
Thought I would throw that out there in case someone else is interested.
It could get really bad close to Chicago it looks like. There are 50 dbz bands heading northeast and the surface temp in Chicago is 31 degrees. That could put down a lot of freezing rain in a hurry
Within the past few minutes, I have noticed storms firing along a dry line in central Oklahoma. Dewpoint readings near 16 in Oklahoma City while areas just east are in the upper 50’s. Quite a contrast.
I think it will be from this line that may get the severe weather rolling across parts of Arkansas and eventually west KY. As you can tell, that’s pretty far away. We’ll see if these storms can stay together.
Wind seems to be picking up quite a bit here.
Its severe Thunderstorms and some isolated Tornado’s possible. It’s not the end of the world relax it’s all good we all been through this countless times. If severe weather threatens take the proper precautions and you’ll be alright. The mets are just excited it’s our first real legimate shot at some severe weather.
I will be trying to update my blog as things develop. I am tired, so no promises. I am also super excited about all this!!
I do think that they will be staying together. Shear is very high, and that can do a lot.
Whats up guys?! Lol. Hopefully everyone is doing well, it has been awhile. I am hoping for some severe weather. I feel like my town always misses out lol.
The wind is starting to get real gusty around here (London) area. Everybody stay safe!!!!!!!
Thanks I will check it out, can’t be too prepared since I can’t sit at home on the blog 24/7 haha 😀
Ain’t hap’nin tann ite. Karen ain’t huffin’ nuff, and Bruce ain’t suckin’ nuff.
The 60s at night in February….. seems we have a fair shot of getting smacked late tonight. Too warm, so plenty of energy differential for rough stuff.
Check out http://www.spotterchat.org for a great chat on this severe weather
You can have my severe weather. I hate when I see it heading my way.
Went in there. They were a little too fascist, promptly jumping onto me about not knowing who I am and wanting my name to reflect their rules and whatnot. I’m too much of a free spirit for that.
