Good Monday, everyone. Rounds of thunderstorms are rumbling across the area today, bringing some big time rains. This is part of the stormy setup we’ve been getting you ready for since early last week and it’s one likely to be with us through the upcoming weekend.
We will spend the day watching the northwest skies for clusters of storms diving into the bluegrass state. A few of these storms may be on the strong side and the SPC even has a low-end severe risk for parts of the area…
Any storm that’s out there can put down a lot of rain and that’s the primary issue to watch for through tonight. Local high water issues are a possibility.
Additional rounds of storms will be with us through the rest of the week, but it’s not raining all the dang time, folks! 🙂 When it does, it can put it down in a hurry. Here’s the GFS through the rest of the week into the weekend…
The model is now in line with the GFS Ensembles in keeping the action going into next week…
This also comes with additional troughs trying to dig into the eastern part of the country. The European Model has been showing this for a while and the EURO Ensembles are all over it…
You can see how the ridge goes west as the trough digs into the east. Can we go ahead and lock that look in for the winter months? 🙂
I will have the latest on WKYT-TV starting at 4pm and may have another update at some point here on KWC. Until then, here are your tracking tools for the day…
Possible Watch Areas
Have a good one and take care.
Nothing better than an eastern trough in August.
Thanks Chris, heavy rains here in Taylor county early this morning along with some infrequent lightning and thunder.
The area of showers seems to be “training” from north to south as seen presently on the radar.
It seems these troughs have been showing up in our region more frequently this Summer and could like you hinted in this morning’s blog be a signal as to what our Fall and Winter may be.
I noticed on the Ventusky weather site that the temperatures in the interior part of the mainland of Greenland are now below zero.
Test.
We have a PDS Severe Thunderstorm Watch in Iowa, Wisconsin and Illinois for a derecho that can produce winds up to 100MPH. Wow. Won’t want to get in the way of that.
Very dangerous storms are headed toward the Chicago area for later this afternoon, as a formidable line of thunderstorms has developed in Iowa that has produced wind gusts of between 80 and 90 MPH and significant damage! This derecho is racing to the SE at 70 MPH and is predicted to get here in a few hours.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect until 7 PM for all of Northern IL, and all of Northern IL is under a moderate risk of severe weather this afternoon, which is a high level of risk assessment and is very rare in the month of August.
Dew points are currently in the upper 70s and it’s very oppressive out. It’s going to be an interesting afternoon for sure, but hope any damage will be limited.

Illinois Mike, your ears must had been ringing as I was about to comment on this very event and you being in the path! Quad Cities area getting clocked now. NWS Quad Cities reporting near 100 mph gusts. At least you have some time to batten down the hatches. While there is a smaller threat of an isolated tornado or two (Tornado Warning near Dubuque Iowa now), as you touched on it’s the damaging non-tornadic wind risk with the highest chances.
After working this morning at the office (with mask handy), working from home the rest of the day…or trying to if my rambunctious little girl will let me! 🙂
TennMark, I just returned from an 8-mile bike ride and am battening down the hatches for sure! There’s severe thunderstorm warnings for the entire Chicago area for the next hour, and tornado warnings out just to my west. The NWS is categorizing this as a “very dangerous situation” with tornado-like wind speeds.
It’s getting really dark here now, with thunder in the distance. It’s extremely oppressive outside, with a dew point of 76.
I think it’s just a matter of time before a tornado warning is issued for Will County, where I am. That bow line of storms on radar is incredible!
Just as I am typing this, the tornado sirens are going off in here in Plainfield! Skies are dark, but no wind yet or rain.
