Good Tuesday to one and all. Mother nature is reminding us it’s still winter as we have a blustery Tuesday that may feature a few snowflakes for some. While the winter feel is with us today… it’s a series of spring like storms that will bring a lot of rain and thunderstorms to our region late this week into early next week. That is going to be the main focus of the blog in the coming days.
In the short term… temps will struggle into the upper 30s and low 40s for highs under a mostly cloudy sky today. A weak disturbance is crossing the area and may touch off a rain or snow shower… especially north and east. You can follow along here…
Wednesday looks to be the nicest day of the week as readings warm into the low 50s under partly sunny skies. Make that the day to go out and enjoy as a big storm will be rolling into town on Thursday leading to widespread rain and thunderstorms.
Low pressure will fire up across the southern plains and ride into the western Ohio Valley later Thursday into early Friday. This will pump warm, moist and unstable air in here with waves of rain and storms likely. This setup can put down quite a bit of rain that can lead to high water concerns for some areas. Take a look at the rain totals I am expecting for Thursday and Friday…
Much of that will fall in a 24 hour period and that much rain can lead to some localized flooding problems.
In addition to the heavy rains… the potential for strong or severe thunderstorms will be with us as well. The highest change for severe storms will be across southern and western Kentucky and points south and west from there. That doesn’t mean the rest of the state won’t see severe weather… I’m just pointing out the area that has the best chance.
The atmosphere wants to run in “supercharged” mode for a while and this should lead to another big storm early next week. This is basically going right to the active pattern we have been yapping about for a while and the storm next week may also have heavy rains and severe weather. Here it is on the GFS…
That may end up being a much more wound up storm cutting into the Great Lakes… but you get the idea.
Take a look at the rainfall forecast from the GFS from Thursday through Tuesday…
That is spitting out better than 6″ of rain for much of the region and is certainly something we should be paying attention to as it would produce some high water.
This pattern is coming about as winter tries to take control of the country once again. This time around… we have the increasing seasonal warmth showing up across the southern states. Put these two together and you can get a lot of action where they meet to slug it out and that is right over the Ohio Valley. I expect winter to gradually gain the upper hand into early March and that should give us another accumulating snow or two before winter calls it a season. ![]()
I will update this active pattern as needed so check back. Have a great Tuesday and take care.

You’re right Chris!! That’s a lot of rain on the way!!!
Thanks CB. Haven’t updated my blog yet but recently I listed my concern for potential severe weather across southern and western Kentucky. However, I’m interested in seeing if the models present a possible trend north today as this would shift the axis of severe weather north as well. It’s going to be fun to figure out. Hello spring!
That is a lot of rain. Sad part is by the time it gets cold the moisture will be gone.
We recieved close to an inch of rain here yesterday. It was enough to make the rivers swollen, and with this last rain also hitting heavy to our north and that much rain yet to come, we will certianly see some flooding in this area. Of course this all drains to the Ohio River. I wouldn’t be surprised to see the Ohio even make it out of its banks before it is all said and done. Lets hope this isn’t the Case!
Wow that is a lot of snow being forcast for the state. 1-3 general with 2-4 over most. Should there be WSW being posted soon. Oh! It is rain totals…My bad I am still in winter mode. Can’t get 2-4 inches of snow forecast for Central Ky, but it has no problem raining 2-4 inches. I am sure the rain won’t dodge us like the snow does. Get out your rain gear, but keep the snow gear handy..MARCH WILL BE COLD AND SNOWY!!!
Thank you for such detailed information. I found your site via the Herald-Leader and am subscribing. Again, thanks!
Please tell me that the end of March will be nice!! Our kidlet and grandkidlet will be visiting from Idaho…
While severe wx is certainly possible Thursday in the LEX area, I’m not super confident in it right now because the track of the low looks to be a little too far south to really put us in the warm sector of the system. For now, looks like a heavy rainer to me.
I see your point, and I do expect heavy rainfall, but I do think lexington will at least see some type of severe weather. The ECMWF has shown it for a couple days now….
WELCOME!!! this is the most informative weather blog going. Chris sets the stage, and the many talented, knowledgeable, weather geeks complete the act. Be warned…some of them will try and sway you towards the dark side…look toward the light!
wow…Joe Bastardi SUDDENLY RESIGNED from accuweather Feb.21st…whats up with that???!!!
i heard he is going to TWC.
hey larkin – give us some input, do you think we will have more snow or is spring here??? curious minds want to know!!
i heard it was a resign or be fired deal because Accuweather has caught so much flack over his “Long Range” winter forecast that he blew out of the water. he really said that the east coast would be mild this winter, wow – talk about eating crow!!!!
His long range forecasts surely had a part in it but I tend to think it goes a little further than that. In the past few months, he had made it a point to call out the theory of “GW” in such a way that made it crystal clear exactly where he stood on the issue. Big no-no there…
But no matter what the “behind-the-scenes” reason for it, Joe B will be just fine. 😉
I am terrified of tornadoes and bad storms. I hope it doesn’t get too bad. Would much rather have snow.
Hey guys, I posted an update on my site. Also, tomorrow morning I will be presenting riddlesweather.com to my geology class( My professor asked me to) I should have a live stream. Comment on my site, and let me know if you think the live feed is a good idea!
Hey guys,
I posted ab update on my website. Also, tomorrow morning I will be giving a presentation of riddlesweather.com to my geo 130 class lol. My professor asked me to, but I am thinking I might post a live feed of it. Anyone who thinks it is a good idea, leave a comment on my website.. I am not sold on if the feed would be worth it or not 😉
My thoughts exactly. Its already a touchy subject.
I’m sure he will be alright tho, maybe FOX will give him a spot, he was always doing guest spots on their cable news channel. 🙂
I hear ya. I am fascinated by severe storms, but having been in a few tornados…they terrify me too.
I usually pray alot everyday, but during spring storm season I seem to pray constantly 😉
Thanks, Chris. Hmmm….tomorrow going to be the best day of the week? Maybe I sould call in sick…..JK JK. (I save my sick days for when I really need them. but it IS a thought. 😉 )
Guess I will need to switch from the snow boots to the galoshes, at least for the next week….temps here are not too bad at this point. We are sitting in the mid 40s and the wind is light, so mot much chill..for now.
I must say, my heatpump has enjoyed getting a rest the past few days, as well. Looking forward to the next update. Thanks again, Chris.
Nancy, welcome to the blog! Glad you found it. We are a family here, and Chris is the matriarch of the clan! 😉 ha ha. Seriously, he is the best when it comes to weather statewide. Glad to have you become one of us.
Wx, glad to see your imput on Thursday’s system. I still think we could se some severe stuff out of it, but, then, I am in south central KY, so, that is in the more favored area, according to CB. I don’t think you guys are really out of it either, at least, not at this point. either way, heavy rain for all, and very soggy ground is not a good thing.
I think the lice stream is a great idea! And kudos to your professor for asking you to present it!
Amen to that E-TownKY. I do a lot of praying during severe weather too, lol 🙂
Thanks, Jen. Long time weather junkie, but will probably lurk more than post. We’ll see.
Thank you, Coffeelady. Pleased to have found you all (includes Chris).
🙂
Oh great… I sincerely hope we don’t experience any flooding. I don’t think my galoshes can take any more moisture! Here’s hoping it doesn’t turn severe.
