Good afternoon, folks. The final Saturday of August continues to feature a cold front dropping in from the northwest. This front is bringing a broken line of showers and storms with it across the south, but the focus going forward is on more rain and storms later Sunday and Monday. That’s along the same boundary stalling out right now in the south. Farther down the weather road, some real deal early fall chill continues to show up.

The storms into early this evening will impact the southern half of the state and one or two may be strong or locally severe. Here are your radars to track the action…

Better air slips into the northern half of the state, but doesn’t have enough of a push to kick the front out of here. Instead, rain and thunderstorms developing now in Missouri and Arkansas will work in later Sunday into Monday. The greatest concentration will be across the southern half of the state and this is where local high water issues will be possible. The models are spitting out some hefty totals by Monday afternoon…

Given the fact some areas picked up 2″-3″ rain amounts of Laura, we will have to keep a close eye on that setup. High temps are mainly in the 70s for the final two days of the month and that’s solidly below normal.

The numbers rebound into the first few days of September as more rounds of storms target the region…

This is ahead of a bigger push of fall air arriving by the end of the week into the weekend…

That would be the opening act toward a much bigger blast of chill moving in early the following week. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a model forecast the 540 thickness line into the Ohio Valley in early September, but the GFS has been doing it consistently…

That setup looks like something you see in late fall or winter. That would send our numbers crazy below normal…

We will see just how extreme the chill can get as we get closer. Regardless, the pattern is skewed much cooler than normal through the first half of September. It’s reminding me a bit of September or 2000 with the overall look.

I will have another update tonight, so check back. Until then, have a good one and take care.
