Good Thursday everyone and thanks for dropping by the blog on such a fine weather day. As we enjoy the warmest air since November… the return of winter is lurking for next week. Did you really think the warm stuff was here to stay?

Before we get to the wintry part of the program… it’s all about the warm weather of now. Highs will reach the upper 60s to low 70s across the state making for one heck of a weather day. Partly sunny skies will be with us today as winds begin to gust up. Track the warm temps here…

Current Temps

A cold front will swing in from the west on Friday and this will bring an increase in clouds and wind and should also bring  a few showers our way. High temps will range from the upper 50s to low 60s. Cooler air moves in for the weekend with readings near 50 Saturday and in the low and middle 50s Sunday with some showers trying to work back in.

This brings us to next week and the increasing prospect for winter’s return to our part of the world. An arctic high pressure will be pressing southward into the country by late Sunday into Monday. This happens as low pressure develops across the plains states. The southward push of arctic air should force this low to head southeastward across the lower Ohio Valley and Tennessee Valley Monday and into the Carolinas by Tuesday. The European Model has been leading the way in showing this…

A track like that would include a band of snow and ice on the northern side of the low and the GFS is on board with just such an event…

What does that mean in terms of any snow or ice around here? Well… if we ask that particular run of the GFS to show us what it thinks will fall. It has this to say…

Again… that is only one run of one computer model and I am only showing it for entertainment purposes. The scenario of a farther southward tracking low does have a lot of model support right now. The GFS Ensembles are heading in this direction as well…

Add the Canadian Model to the mix…

We warned you old man winter wasn’t through with us just yet. At least this gives us something to track until it decides to deliver a big snow to some other part of the country.

The overall weather pattern continues to head back into a very wintry look for the country for next week into early March. I have been harping on this big buildup of arctic cold in Canada and that is likely to try to overwhelm the weather across the central and eastern parts of the country during this time. Take a look at the European Model down the road…

Here is the GFS for the exact same time…

Now that we have something to track… we will get back to updating things as needed through the day so check back. Enjoy the warm air of today… it won’t be along much longer. Have a good Thursday and take care.
