Good Friday, folks. It’s shaping up to be a busy weather day across the Commonwealth as a potent cold front rolls across the state. This brings the chance for strong storms, gusty winds and a major temperature drop. That takes us back into more of a November feel for much of the upcoming weekend. From there, things get active again with rounds of rain and a big temp fight next week.
Let’s focus on today and roll forward. Temps reach the 70s on a strong southwest flow. Scattered showers and thunderstorms will go up as the day wears on and we’re likely to see a line of showers and storms develop along the front itself. That could spawn some strong or local severe storms across western and central Kentucky. This is where the Storm Prediction Center has a low-end risk for severe weather through Friday evening…
The temp drop coming behind this front is pretty awesome to see and the NAM is showing temps more than 30 degrees colder from Friday afternoon to Saturday afternoon…
WOW!!
Highs go from the 70s to the upper 40s…
The trend behind all this is colder and colder as we get closer and that now goes for Sunday. The models were showing widespread 70s showing up until recently. The NAM now keeps the chilly air holding tough…
That’s something to keep in mind going forward as we head into the setup for next week. It’s a setup likely to bring rounds of rain, some heavy, to our region from Monday through Friday. No, it’s not going to be all the time, but some hefty totals may show up.

We are seeing the cold air pressing in more and more, leading to a colder pattern during this time. I think we see more of that showing up, just like what we are seeing for this weekend. Why? This is some highly anomalous cold across the country and models don’t handle big anomalies very well, especially in a transition season like fall.
I will have another update later today. Until then, here are your tracking tools for the day…
Possible Watch Areas
Have a great Friday and take care.
Yesterday was a beautiful “Indian Summer Day.” Cumulus clouds painted the sky in the afternoon and the temperature top out at 80 degrees.
Autumn color on the forest around my home is not too disappointing this year.
Our low temperature this Autumn so far has been 31 degrees with just a light frost in low lying areas.
With the cold fronts “hanging up” or “dying out,” I wonder if our first hard freeze is going to be late or maybe not at all this month.
Average date of the first hard freeze (25 to 28 degrees) in my county of Taylor is around the 25th of October.
Not looking forward to the cold and wet and gloom this weekend.
Maybe Monday we will be back to Sunny and mild weather again ?
