Good Friday everyone and welcome to the weekend. We are starting this day out on another frigid note with temps tanking to below zero in many areas. The good news for all of you lovers of warmer weather is we have it coming your way over the next week. The bad news is it is only temporary as a battle between cold and warm is set to take shape for the end of the month into early March.

In the short term… it’s COLD! Temps this morning will once again bottom out below zero for many areas for the second day in a row. The rest of the state will likely see temps settle into the single digits to start us out today.

Track the cold here…

Current Temps

Partly sunny skies will be with us today as readings warm into the 30s across the board. A bit of a breeze will pick up as well ahead of a weak system diving in from the northwest. This does not have a lot of juice and may fire off a sprinkle or flurry for Saturday. It will keep our temps from warming as we stay in the upper 30s to low 40s with breezy conditions.

The mild air will fight it in for Sunday as westerly winds gust up and bring temps into the 50s for most areas. Sunday is the pick day of the weekend to get outside and shake some of that winter rust off.

It is the middle and end of next week that can see temps REALLY take off. A weak front will move in for Valentine’s Day Monday with a rain or snow shower and temps coming back down a few degrees. After that… the mild air surges in here. By the end of the week… temps should easily warm into the 60s for a few days and if things work out just right… This pattern can flirt with 70.

The GFS Ensembles Temp departure centered on Thursday continue to take on a warmer look…

What happens to the pattern after next week? That’s a good question and i’m glad I asked it. The following week will see colder air in Canada working southward into the northern half of the country. The same GFS Ensembles show the extreme warmth getting knocked out fairly quickly…

The pattern I foresee setting up for the last week of February into early March sees the classic battle between a cold northern half of the country and a warmer southern half. That usually puts us in the battle zone and also produces big storms that can take aim at the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys with rain and snow.

The latest GFS Precipitation forecast for the next few weeks certainly looks the part…

How funny would it be if we all have a serious case of spring fever and get into early March when Old Man Winter decides to finally dump a big snow on us?

My words of wisdom to the old man from this point on this season… go big or go home!

I have a busy day ahead and I am not sure when I can update again. Either way… post the cold low temps from where you live and take care.
