Good Thursday afternoon gang. If looks could thrill… today would be an awesome weather day. Looking outside and seeing blue skies and sunshine lures you outside to be smacked around by the arctic cold temps in place. Readings this morning went below zero in many areas and tonight is going to be another cold one.
Take a look at the morning lows and where your temp stands now…
Low Temps
Current Temps
Paducah set a record low this morning of -4 degrees shattering the old record of 2 set back in 1979.
The NWS in Paducah has a nice write up on just how cold and snowy this winter has been in the western part of the state…
At Paducah, the average temperature from December 1 to February 9 was 31.3 degrees. This ranks as the 9th coldest such period on record. Records at Paducah date back to 1937. The coldest such period was 27.3 in 1977, followed by 28.5 in 1978.
At Paducah, the snowfall so far this season has been 18.9 inches. This ranks as the 5th snowiest such period. The snowiest such period on record was 26.0 inches in 1984-1985. The mean snowfall for an entire winter at Paducah is only 9.6 inches, and about 9 inches was received from Feb. 7-9 this year.
As we mentioned last evening… Lexington has now moved into the top ten snowiest winters on record. The 27.4″ of snow ranks 9th all time. Through January… the average winter temp for Lexington was on pace for a top 5 coldest on record. We shall see where it ends up.Thanks for all the kind remarks earlier about the blog upgrade that will be taking place in the months ahead. Feel free to tell me some things you would like to see added to the site. I have some cool ideas to get schools more involved with what we do and may try to get some of those going before the upgrade. Teachers… this can get your class some blog time.
I will have another update coming later today and we will focus on the frigid Friday morning ahead and a look at the warmer temps coming for next week. Oh… and how winter isn’t done yet.
Take care.
second !!!
WHOO HOO! Winter isn’t done!!
i wish he would have elaborated on that … i keep hearing conflicting theories; one will say we get snow in march, two more says winter is over and an early spring is coming … does anybody really know? it is a take it day by day kinda thing.
you are lame, that is about the dumbest thing typed on here …. 🙁
all i can tell you is listen to what chris says. if he says winter isn’t over, than it’s not over.chris is da man.

Awesome news Chris. I am excited about all the changes to the blog coming. Thanks for doing all this for us weather luvers, I am amazed at all you do here…and now a new site? Wow.
I am a newbie to the site this year, and have enjoyed being a part of this blog, meeting all the different, unique and genuinely friendly people from all over Kentucky that frequent the blog every day. Everyone is so helpful and there are so many insights and opinions on all the ins and outs of the weather, and everyone shares their knowledge. Its like a big weather family and its so great that people actually get to know one another here. I am looking forward to more snowstorms, severe weather and even the boring days ahead here on “The Blog”– as well as reading your thoughts and quirks. Keep up the good work, and thank you again for allowing me to be a part of your blog & weather family.
Oh yeah– E-Town was COLD this morning, whew!! LOVE IT! 🙂
You have to see this Time Lapse video.

Hey Chris! You know I would love to see a graphic for the storms during spring showing wind directions. We usually only see that when a met breaks in, but this way we’d be ahead of the game and know quicker of a possible tornado.
I agree with Beverly, Chris. Storm graphics would be nice.
I also think Beverly has a great suggestion. As a survivor of the 1974 tornado outbreak, I would appreciate any tools that will help everyone be better prepared for severe weather.
Chris,
It would really be nice to see you do the weather as if you were on the local news…the good ol’ days!!!
So Nowata, OK, east of Ponca City established a new record low for the state when their mesonet site recorded -31°F this morning! Chilly!
Chryea a snow go type thing for schools would be cool for blog, advsing of delays and cancalations.
may a KENTUCKYWEATHER CENTER APP for phones to if is not to costly, I be glad to donate some funds to the blog for upgrades.
oh tim calm downman, nothing rong with that. u know that could be a teenager and u being a A HOLE real real proffesional.
An app would be cool!
Get a sense humor, goodness – have some fun. Trying for second and getting first is something to be celebrated.
I hate making comparisons because this blog is really the best in the state. However, I was a regular participant in Belski’s Blog and appreciated his various contests offered to the readers. Made it really fun.
It wouldn’t have to be expensive gifts, perhaps just a hint of recognition is all. But I think some weather contest on this site would draw quite a bit of added enthusiasm.
Thanks for you hard work Chris!!! I am excited to see what is to come for this blog!!!!! I am also adding a forecast section to my blog for anyone who is interested or reads it.
Would love to get my 3rd graders involved with your weather blog. 🙂
The way some people act on here, I thought your third graders were already participating. All in good fun, correct.
I would like to see a like and dislike button. Then we dont gave to post and get sent to moderation time out lol!!!
Just want to say, I really enjoy getting the emails and updates. Can’t wait to see what “enhancements” you may have in the future on this blog. I’m with Aimee that it would be great to see you as if you were still doing the local weather. Thanks for all you do. Don’t write much but I sure read a lot!!
I’m a teacher! It would be so cool to have space for data collection/analysis, keeping logs, a link to a wiki, a place for the students to communicate and collaborate. Anyone up for this?
I would donate as well to the blog.. anyone else?
I don’t post much, but I read the blog, several times a day, I think You have a really good idea there. It would help the younger kids to learn some of things that go along with meteorology, and by letting them get together and collaborate would make it fun for them. The more followers we can get to visit the blog would help Chris get some more sponsors. Who knows maybe the kids can get their parents to become big weather fans, if they aren’t already:)
I tell you winter will not be over until after Easter! The old timers that I grew up around always said that it wouldn’t stay warm until then. I have noticed that is usually the way it is and Easter isn’t until the 24th of April this year.
and by the way this isnt me…I have a sense of humor…B)….:)
that was pretty cool …car completely disappeared…lol..
I’m excited already. I’ll have middle school students forecasting in no time! It would be cool to be able to connect with mets about science fair projects also or have an ‘ask the expert’ section- Lincoln?….where are you?
southern ky going below zero again tonight in spots.
Chris, thanks so much for your thorough and professional job on this blog during this long winter in Kentucky. I’m excited to read of your plans for the blog and look forward to seeing what the future beholds for you. I am a 5th grade teacher and would love to use your blog in my classroom as an interactive tool of sorts. Feel free to email me and let me know what your thoughts on school involvement may be.
