Good Thursday everyone. A big thanks for all you guys do for the blog as you are the engine behind what happens here. Your reports help out the entire weather community across the state. The reports coming today will be about the arctic cold temps that have engulfed the region once again. We will take a look at the cold that will lose it’s hold over the next week and have some words about the future of this blog.
Before we get to the cold… let’s look back at the snows of Wednesday. I am more than happy with the forecast we had out with the snowfall as we hit the overall theme of the snows. More importantly… we tracked this white stuff from more than a week away and never jumped ship with the rest of the weather world when the models kept all the snow well to our south. Parts of western and southern Kentucky picked up 4″ or 5″ of new snow. For our friends in the west… this is easily the worst week of the entire winter as many areas picked up 8″ or more of snow since Monday and are now dealing with bitter cold.
Speaking of the cold… it will be with us into Friday as lows can REALLY crash. With a fresh snow cover and clearing skies… temps this morning may head toward 0 in the west and single digits for the rest of the region. You can track the bitter cold courtesy of the good folks at Kentucky Mesonet…
Current Temps
Low Temps
Highs today will stay in the low and mid 20s once again as we see a partly sunny sky return. Thermometer readings will once again head toward the single digits by Friday morning under mainly clear skies. Friday afternoon will see readings rebound toward the freezing mark for many.
A weak system will dive in from the northwest Friday night and Saturday. It will be starved of moisture and should only be able to spit out a flurry or very light snow shower… especially in the east. Temps should be in the upper 30s to near 40 for highs. Winds will be rather gusty over the weekend as a shot of milder air works in for Sunday with temps nearing 50 degrees.
After a little dip on Monday… a case of spring fever will be likely for the middle and end of next week. Temps can hit 60 or better for a couple of days. The flip from the arctic cold of today to the mild weather for next week will be rather stark and the GFS Ensembles temp departure show this very well…
This doesn’t mean winter is over as I fully expect the cold to stage a comeback during the last week of February into early March. The upcoming pattern taking shape should be one that produces more big storms across the country and don’t be surprised if we are tracking snow threats into the first few weeks of March. ![]()
In terms of this little slice of weather heaven we call “the blog”… it continues to grow and this winter has sent it to new heights with more than 5 million hits since December first. It is something I do on my own time and something I am very proud of as it gives folks across the state a place to meet and talk weather.
I have decided to take the dive and invest more time and money into this and develop it into a full blown weather site for Kentucky. The “blog” part of it all will remain the same, but I will be adding pages of all kinds of weather goodies for you guys. The site will undergo a major upgrade in looks and overall quality of performance and I hope to add some help before all is said and done. Some things will stay the same… it will always remain a free site and you will continue to get one dedicated weather dude to post his thoughts and forecasts. Right or wrong… you guys are stuck with me. ![]()
This also means we will be taking on more partners and advertisers to the site. All these changes will be taking place during the next several months and I am looking for a web designer to help a weather dude out. If you are interested… shoot me an email.
Speaking of email… my inbox has blown up over the past few months and I will be answering all those in the coming weeks. If you emailed me and I didn’t get back to you… please accept my apology and keep watching your inbox.
So… we have some exciting times ahead here on the blog. It is going to keep me extra busy… but that’s how we like it. For all the new folks that found us this winter… we don’t stop once the snow ends. This blog goes strong each and every day as we track severe weather, flooding, boring days and even what’s happening in the tropics.
I will have another update coming later today so check back. Have a great Thursday and take care.

Chris, Congrats on the upgrade! Looking forward to seeing what you have in store for us!
kyweathercenter getting an upgrade!! Thanks for your dedication chris!
Looks like good times ahead 🙂
Wow, Chris, it says a lot when you’re willing to invest more time and money into a blog that you already do so much for. I’m very excited to see what the site will look like in a few months from now. I’m very happy to know that there are still individuals that are very passionate about there line of work. Oh, and it doesn’t matter if you’re right or wrong, we will stick with you through anything. If we cared that much we wouldn’t continue to come to a sight thats an amazing weather site that answers all of our questions. I think I can speak for my fellow bloggers, when I say, that we appreciate you and your time beyond what you could ever know. I’m very happy with you’re forecasts, you do a GREAT JOB!!! 🙂
Rock on Mr. CB!!! For those of you with peak interest in severe weather, this spring is going to be a bumpy ride for us. For those that hate severe weather… Well, it’s going to be a bumpy ride;)
Interesting, RS. What makes you say that?
Thanks for the upgrade-the site has become very slow to load here in Georgetown. I would have no problem paying a small annual fee to access the site, or even get your family a gift card for dinner somewhere as a thank you for having this forum. This is the most accurate weather site and always the first stop when I wake up at 2:00 for work.
I agree RS, please elaborate on what you mean, I hate severe weather.
Chris, your blog has become a daily viewing in our home. We are looking forward to upgrade–thanks for all the time you dedicate to the weather and this site.
Chris, your blog has become a daily viewing in our home–for the most accurate forecast avaliable. We are looking forward to upgrade–thanks for all the time you dedicate to the weather and this site.
For better or worse we all keep coming back and we all appreciate what you do. I just hope this summer we aren’t keeping up with extreme heat and humidity like last summer. Ugh. 70’s and 80’s are fine! Lol. Looking forward to a nice intermission of warm weather before winter’s curtain call in March.
Jake
Chris you had me scared at first I thought you were going to say you were closing it.I am so glad you are not.I will work and help you anyway I can please just let me know.I would love it.Thank you again LEGEND lol.
Cool!!! Can’t wait to see the new upgraded site. I have been commenting on your blogs since the blog started at WKYT
I still can’t believe Lexington is still ahead of Tulsa in Snowfall for the season….Crazy how many little systems we have had…..Although I remember a lot of the area did have six inches from one of the events. I can’t remember which one though.
We’re in a La Nina period that could last through spring. La Nina typically bring a greater severe weather threat to the mid west, us. Article written (link below)in 2008 which applies this year 2011.
http://indianaweatheronline.com/blog3/2008/02/what_la_nina_means_for_the_sev.html
According to the Canadian model, we might be looking at a severe weather threat on the backside of this warm up. Way out around 02/22ish/11.
The best is going to get better! I love it how people used to ask me, “What does Chris say?” now they’re hooked and checking for themselves. They have learned what many of us already knew. If you want to know what the weather is going to be, check with Chris. Thanks, Chris, for your dedication to helping us know what’s to come!
thanks, chris, what a big help on days like today!
so how much snow did you all get? i got just a tad over 4 inches in london near laurel lake … roads are still pretty bad right now.
Congrats on upgrading I come to your site two or three times a day. Thanks for all your dedicated work. (thanks to your family too. We seem to have you a lot). Keep up the excellent work.
Thanks Chris for this blog. I noticed how that yesterday, the Weather Channel predicted us to get an inch or less. You nailed it plus. Here in North Corbin we picked up just under 6″. I am new to the blog and am finding it quite nice and accurate. Though I know it is hard to predict Winter Storms, sometimes even miss them. but you handle it good strive. Keep up the good work and I will keep on reading and posting. Great site. I no longer trust weather.com or accuweather.com.
Wanted to send you a quick word of Thanks for your efforts regarding Kentucky Weather. I live and farm in rural Breckinridge County (SW of Louisville) and followed John Belski’s blog for years. With Belski retiring, I was left without a good source for weather updates. Found your site shortly after and am now a regular visitor. Farmers need a dependable, accurate weather source; you do an excellent job in that regard. Best I have followed which includes Tom Wills; and that is saying allot. Thank You.
It is FREEZING cold! Right now it is 5 degrees in Shelbyville. Thank goodness we didn’t ge any snow or it would be close to 0!
Wow. My thermometer here in Nicholasville is still on 4f at 8a. Crazy! If we had gotten a lot of snow it would have been crazy cold.
Jake
Great news Chris! I’ve been coming here for years and am tickled for your coming upgrade. I remember when it was mostly Bernie, Vinnie, Chelle, Crystal, Rolo, Shauna (and some other names that escape me)…we used to hang out in Freaksters in between posts and email your new Posts to vinny when he was at work! 😉 There are certainly lots of new regulars that I enjoy reading now as well!! I’m tickled to have this place and look forward to it’s continued growth. See ya in the blog!!
CB…Thanks for all you do…Your insight on the weather helps me, and I am sure, many others plan our daily and weekly routines. I am in Louisville and I view your site every morning and evening. I don’t even watch the local mets on TV as I am very confident in your forecasting. I also enjoy reading all the posts and seeing what other have to say, good or bad, about the weather and comments. It is sometimes comical…Keep up the great work and good luck.
I will be clicking on adds when they are added to support Bailey.
Awesome future ahead for sure! I for one have to admit that I generally abandon the blog during the warmer months as I am either road biking, mountain biking, surfing or a plethora of other outdoorsy things… I had no idea that the blog was as active in the warm months. Looks like I may have to set up camp for planning purposes on my trips to the various coasts or local trails! Your blog is awesome Bailey! Keep up the awesome work! It keeps us stoked!
Great news CB-thanks very much for your dedication to our/your passion!
TIM! Can’t believe I forgot Tim! And the Ark! LOL
Also..thanks to BUBBAG, ROLO, Lincoln, MS, MITCH and TORNADOLARKIN for there dedication to your site. Without them many of your followers would be left out in the cold, not pun intended, during your down time. They always have usful information.
(sigh of relief)I was worried it was going to be bad news. Instead, it’s great news! Chris, we are so thankful you have stuck with us for so long, and now you’re doing a site upgrade/overhaul. You really are the best Weatherdude ever!!! Let us know ways we can help. 🙂
Great news Chris. This site will be invaluable this spring once severe weather season “springs” upon us. I look forward to the many changes coming. Wish I knew something about web design, because I would be first in line.
I can’t believe this is the snowiest meterological winter since 1977-1978 and we haven’t had one decent event!
Snowiest season overall since 1995-1996. Still need 4.3 inches to move into the Top 10 overall..will we get it??
Dropped to 1 in Lawrenceburg this morning!
I just looked at the 00Z GFS 384 model for today, and that in itself is enough to spark a touch of spring fever. It is amazing after the past two months to see blue splotches of precip over us, and the 10C line just to the north or south. It will be nice to feel the suns warmth for a couple of weeks, and hopefully get some decent moisture into the ground. We are below in precip totals, so this will be a good thing.
I have an update on my thoughts for the future over on my blog if anyone is interested.
Yo Bailey. Hows bout we adds a grammer and speell chekar to teh syite?
where have you been hiding???..I was just asking about you the other day..
Chris..thanks for all you do man !! the blog is apart of our daily routine…Looking forward to the upgrade…alot of us have been with the blog since the very first time at WKYT, and now we get to witness another great move!!!…
………
OH and by the way, I ended up with 5″ of snow here on “SNO GLOBE” mnt…lol..
Great news about the expansion of the blog, Chris! I’ve gotten to the point where yours is the only forecast I really trust. The folks at WKYT do a great job, but when it comes down to really breaking down the forecast and letting us know what to expect, you’re the man. Thanks for everything you do!
I’m here every single day Tim. I just don’t post much anymore…no reason – just laziness!
Thanks for all you do Chris. The students and I use this website as a teaching tool in my social studies classes especially when snow is in the forecast. I’m sure there were a lot of happy kids and teachers today, maybe not as many happy parents!
Another forecast nailed outright by CB for my area. Cannot wait to see the new features on the site.
CB, wonder why it took you so long to branch out. I kind of expected you to get taken by another marker in another state in the north or west, since you are a ratings drawer.
Good move on the site, but please try to keep the site simple. Our central KY winter weather may not get big snows, but your blog and the folks here keep it fun 🙂
Grow, Chris, grow!! I check this site every morning and several times during bad weather … you’re the best! No snow on the Franklin/Woodford Co. line yesterday – but my mother-in-law in Versailles (5 miles away) had a dusting. You were right about the sharp cutoff along I64, as usual!
Chris, A big thanks for all your hard work and such a great and accurate weather blog!!!!! I stumbled upon you last winter when I was checking West Virginia’s weather due to travel plans…..and low and behold I discovered you had a Kentucky weather blog also! You do a fantastic job and we really appreciate you!!!! Keep up the good work and I agree with David….we ought to send you a GIANT gift certificate to thank you for everything you do!
Chris,
Excited to hear about the future of the blog. This is the first site I look at in the morning and last one I look at before going to bed. Congratulations on your success and may you accomplish everything you set out to do in the future.
Chris,
Thanks for your hard work and dedication to this site. You are my #1 go-to guy for weather information and you keep us updated at all hours of the day when there is threat of severe weather. Keep up the great work and know that you really are the best there is in the business.
Agreed on these names, plus yourself and the ones Julie noted above. These posters make a huge difference to the site both as entertainment and in usefulness. The blog would not be the same without y’all.
Chris,
So glad you will continue your blog. I check it numerous times during the day. I am glad you are out there keeping us updated !!!!!
Exciting news Chris! Can’t wait to see the new site and all the upgrades. It’s awesome now so I can only imagine what it will be like with all of the new stuff coming.
Got a little over 3 inches of new snow in Adair County. March snow sounds fun but I’m ready for this little break first. Then we’ll be recharged and ready for some more! 😉
Can’t wait to see what you have in store for us with your upgrade! I am addicted to your blog as it is a part of my daily routine! Miss you at wkyt!
there is no one and i mean no one in the weather know like chris bailey. he goes beyond the call of duty to keep us informed about the weather. he is the only one when it comes to getting it right. i tell everyone if you want to know the weather check out chris bailey sight. i for one greatly appreciate it.
We all get addicted and then…summer comes..GASP. haha
Thanks for the updates, CB, and congratulations on your growing weather community!
I’ve been one of your followers for 5 years now, since your days at WKYT and you
are very accurate in giving us what to expect in the weather.
I especially like your humor, and the way you break things down, it makes it
easier for a weather illiterate like me to understand, so thank you.
I don’t post as much as I used to because some ‘bloggees’ like to use any excuse to pick on someone
but I always read everyone’s posts. Thank you again for a great weather site!
Sooo happy about the update for blog. Mr. C is the “weather King of the World”
thanks Chris…
Thank you so much for all you do. I love checking the weather every morning.
You are the best.
chris: congrats on the upgrade, following your blog since day one, those early days at wkyt-27 and those live updates on 630am.we missed an old school snow this year but those nickel and dime snowfalls have added up to a great winter here in the bluegrass region. now bring on spring…
Hey guys, I updated a few hours ago. Just letting anyone who wants to know, know.
I agree about being a Belski fan. Now I am a regular visitor too. This is the FIRST site I check out for weather events.
Truer words have never been written. I am addicted to the blog from November 1 to March 5, then I hardly check in at all.
Everything you’ll read about La Nina indicates this should have been a mild somewhat snowless Winter. Real world experience has shown different which is why my thoughts were for more cold than average. Chris’ Winter thoughts indicated cold weather and snow too. He nailed it. By contrast, El Nino events (strong ones) have brought mild Winters to us in the recent past.
El Nino also has brought some of our worst severe thunderstorm Spring seasons. 1998 is a prime example. So I expect that La Nina may influence the opposite, and keep a lot of the severe weather focused elsewhere in the country. This Spring shouldn’t be one of our more active severe storm seasons.
Hey girl. Im still here just dont post much…to many newbies have attitude or it goes to moderation lol. good to see ya….. got the frozen twix lol?????
Chris, GREAT news about the blog! That is just wonderful! Did you ever think it would grow to what it is so quickly when you started it back at KYT?
Its grown because you are one of the BEST, if not THE best! Glad to have been one of your original followers!
Weather for the next week looks great, too! Our low here this morning at the house was 5.7, and it was very slick. Main roads look a lot better now.
Congrats, again! Looking forward to seeing how it all progresses!
OH, and I DO read you when the weather is boring, as well! 😉 ha ha!
Have so enjoyed your website as have all my students at the middle school….Thank you so much!
Let the The LEGEND do his thang. You just keep that ole flip flopping going pal. No OLD SCHOOL for u pal.
Hey Julie so good to hear from you.Remember the blog party we planned on having and our menu list?I think Coffee was with us too and Chas.
I thought you were closing it at first too like Crystal! I was worried! Great job Chris! Thanks for the upgrade!
I know, if you ever stop in during the summer..their is only like 5 comments. Unless we have severe weather 😉
Hmmm…well I was thinking there might be more severe weather because we still need more precipitation events to balance things out after a super dry fall, especially up here in nky. January and December, while relatively snowy, were below average precip wise. I guess we’ll see.
I was scared of what you were going to say about the blog too!!! Whew! I’m glad it was GOOD news! I have been right with your blog since WKYT also. I really wish you were back in Lexington. We miss watching you on the news. Thank you for this blog and all the time and hard work. I appreciate everything you do for us Chris.
Hey Chelle! Yes – still got the Twix!! Those were the good ol’ days, huh? What’s for dinner? 🙂
Hey Crystal! Good to see you too! Yes – those were two others I forgot! We had us some good times!!
Love your weather! Congratz on the upgrade. We really appreciate what you do. God Bless.
I check the blog everyday…I’m a big fan…..thanks for all the hardwork and dedication….keep bringing the snow, I’m a teacher that loves snow days!
