Good Wednesday to one and all. Snow is on the way for much of the state on this Wednesday as a fast moving storm passes by to our south. The setup pretty much remains the same as we talked about in the last post and we will watch the radar trends today to see how far north the flakes can get.
Before the snow moves in… we are starting out today on a frigid note with temps down in the 10-15 degree range for many. Some areas may even bottom out in the single digits in the north and east before clouds roll into town.
Those clouds will carry snow with them by later this afternoon into the evening. The first call map I put out Yesterday still looks good…
I will check the radar trends today and adjust as needed with the final call forecast. Here is how all this goes down…
– Snow will break out from west to east this afternoon into the early evening.
– The best threat for accumulating snows will be across the southern half of the state with lighter amounts in the north.
– There will be a very sharp cutoff to the northern edge of the snow shield. Radar will show us exactly where this “wall” will be setting up.
– This will be a fast moving snow that will be in and out of town in 6-8 hours tops.
– We do need to watch this closely today as the storm was a major overachiever across the plains states Tuesday evening and night. I am not sure I have ever seen heavy snow and -2 degrees… but that happened in parts of Kansas last evening.
– Behind whatever snow falls where you live will be a reenforcing shot of arctic air that can send lows back into the single digits for some Thursday and Friday mornings.
I will get some tracking cams on here with the early afternoon update… until then you can watch the leading edge of the snow streak in from the west…
By the way… much of what you see on that radar will not be hitting the ground until late today. ![]()
Looking farther down the road…
– A clipper type system will dive in from the northwest Friday night and Saturday with some light snow and flurries.
– Sunday should feature a nice bounce back in temps with a stout westerly wind kicking in.
– One more little system brings the threat for a rain or snow shower Monday before a much milder pattern kicks in for a bit for the middle and end of next week…
GFS Ensembles Temp Anomalies Next Friday
This does NOT mean winter is through as I suspect snow and storm threats into March. ![]()
I will have another update and get some snow tracking tools on with the next update so be sure to check back. Have a great Wednesday and take care.

Bring it!
Watching the “wall” should be a lot of fun today! Looking forward to seeing how much we can grt in Adair County later today!
Still in the 2″ – 4″ area. Hope it goes up.
A bummer for Greenup County…again.
Thanks for all you do, Chris. Coming to your blog is the only thing that helps me fight the winter blues. I actually look forward to snow now. LOL Whoda thunkit?! π

NWS in Jackson has added London to the winter weather advisory. Finally!
I know some of you use the RUC models. I’m going to be using it for parts of Oklahoma to see how well it verifies. Hopefully, this will give us some indication of what to expect in our region.
Would love to get snow today but seems like Frankfort won’t get any from this..if it is gonna be cold it should at least snow… oh well maybe we will see something out of this one…
CB is the only met giving anything for London, accuweather says nothing about accumulations, just giving a little snow …. it gets ridiculous how far apart these guys get. also, it is 20 degrees down by laurel lake, didn’t drop to single digits like forecasted.
The following are forecasted snowfall totals for some locations in KY and northern TN using the RUC Model. These are as of 6 a.m. EST. I will try to update a couple of times during the day (if I am not moderated). If you live near a major city, and you are not listed, no snow is forecast.
KJKL β 2.4β, QPF .17β
KLOZ β 3.9β, QPF .26β
KLEX β 1.5β, QPF .12β
KSDF β 0.8β, QPF .07β
KBWG β 3.5 β, QPF .24β
KPAH β 2.9β, QPF .21β
KBNA β 3.2β, QPF .21β
KMEM β 1.7β, QPF .11β
*KTYS — .10β, QPF .01β
*For any of you on the board near Knoxville, totals are low because of the eastern placement of your city. Totals should go up as the event draws closer to your area.
I have an update forecast map over on my blog if anyone is interested.
Hey larkin, your map isn’t loading on my work computer. What do you see for counties just north of Lexington (Bourbon, Scott, Harrison)? Be really curious to see if this thing can move that far north!
larkin … you got a nice website, thanks for the map and keep up the good work !!!!!!
Scott and Bourbon 1-3″, Harrison, 1″.
When do the next models come out?
Thank you!!!!

………………..
WOW !!!! I wonder if we can get in on one of these bands here in southern ky. today..:)
……………….
my luck it will set up in northern Tn…:(…..lol..
The storm doesn’t appear to be diving south as expected (or maybe I’m crazy) It looks like it is going pretty much straigh east right now which could get more of NKY involved.
Even with that much snow, it will last a few days and melt. Still, kids will have fun for while it does last.
Even if it only lasts a short time:
Tis’ better to of had 12″ to 16″ of snow, then none at all.
Us folks in the BSD zone know that π
NWS Lou has moved the WWA up one tier of counties as of 9:27 a.m. New cities added to advisory include E-town, Bardstown and Nicholasville.

The radar seems to be jogging slightly north more in the past hour. Worried about virga but hoping the blue over KY is building the moisture so that when the heavy bands set up it will actually accumulate. Hoping is the key word lol! TO ME it seems like it is definately more north than expected.
It appears that way to me as well. Can’t wait to hear an expert chime in.
YAY! Lets hope it is an overachiever in southern KY as well…we really NEED some snow love, too…
will be looking for updates. Thanks, Chris!
Looks like moisture should make it past i64..Maybe I will get an inch afterall π
Paducah, KY and Cape G., MO both were reporting Lgt Sn @ 9 a.m. EST.
Starting to spit a few snowflakes here in Wayne County, south of Monticello. Probably nothing to get excited about, but I just thought I’d mention it. Anybody else seeing flurries?
here in laurel county the sun is actually trying it’s best to pop out, but to the west toward somerset it is really dark.
I don’t know. The more I look at the Natl. Radar the more it looks like it is going south pretty hard. Will be interesting to see the cut off.
With dewpoint temperatures running around 13, I don’t think the lower levels are as far away from saturation as they could be. It shouldn’t take all that long for the snow to start reaching the ground.
Thanks for sharing the maps and your thoughts! Doing a great job with your website! :o)
Starting to snow very fine flakes here in Grayson Co.
My husband works in Bowling Green and we live in Scottsville. He just called to report that snow has started there in the past few minutes, lightly at first and getting heavier at this time. It hasn’t started snowing in Scottsville yet.
Lex gets the shaft again boys! LOL
I’m not seeing a sink as much as I’m seeing an expansion of moisture in all directions that makes it look to be heading south but at the same time it looks to be going northward as well. I could be wrong.
Hey nice website I like your totals lol.
Here’s the lastest RUC 13Z 24-hour total snowfall map.

Hey Hookie Lau – should I know you? You frequently ask about Paris and Cynthiana. What’s your location?
This is cool from CNN.Give it a second before it shows you totals and then click on radar after that its cool.

Click on Snow Forecast. It gives it to Ky.
http://www.cnn.com/2011/US/02/09/winter.storm/index.html?on.cnn=2
The way events go east, west, north and south of central KY- is downright spooky. Happens every winter since 1998, but still crazy nuts, none the less.
Even Darth and the Dark Force fears the “awesome” power of the Big Snow Dome. Doubt its power at your own peril. True dat π
You would think by looking at the radar paducah and counties south of it would be getting some good snow.
They are getting good snow. My parents just emailed me from Mayfield (just south of Paducah in Graves Co.) and said it’s snowing very heavily. They got 8 inches on Monday and said it’s accumulating fast on parking lots and roads.
Snowing in South Lincoln.
Thxs for the update. The snow gods has been kind to the fine folks out west lately.Hope they receive plenty more.
Snowing very lightly in Burgin ..Mercer county
Brrr cold here in somerset…cloudy. No snow YET π anyone heard if this snow is on track for after 3pm or is it coming in quicker than first thought?
Its snowing lightly in east Lincoln county to.
Reports of 2 feet of snow in parts of Arkansas.Snow ratios almost 20:1..Kinda depressing ain’t it..
NorthWest Marion county has light snowfall. It is beginning to accumulate on the roadways.
Snowing lightly in rockcastle area, hope this is an overacheiver … like other states, bring it on…
Very light snow in Nichvegas.
Tim, where is my fan club at today?? Haha
LOL! Good commercial!
Think this thing may go north? What is your call on Harrison County?
Check Out my blog, I have got a snowfall map on their. The storm the last time I checked was expanding north. But that was few hours ago(I’m on campus)
