Good Monday to one and all. Today is the number one day of the year for people to call in sick as a lot of folks spend the day recovering from all the Super Bowl parties. Why am I mentioning that? I have no idea… but it’s a pretty cool thing to know. As far as the weather goes… a shot of snow will be moving across the state today and should leave some accumulations.

A cold front will be working eastward across the region as a wave of low pressure develops along it and rides from east Tennessee into West Virginia by this evening. Temps ahead of the front will spike toward the low 40s in the east with a quick drop toward 30 behind it. Light rain will be noted for much of central and eastern Kentucky into early this afternoon as western parts of the state see wet snow. The cold air will quickly change the rain over to light snow for everyone by early to mid evening.

Accumulations will be greatest in the west as some areas can pick up a slushy 3″ or so out of this. Farther east… accumulations will be lighter with an inch or less for many areas.

Here is how the GFS sees the transition from rain to snow and the snowfall…

That is likely a bit overdone for many areas as we have a wet ground and marginal temps. Either way… a 1″-3″ snow is likely for the western half of the state into parts of north central Ky.

Watch it all unfold here…

Current Temps

A shot of arctic air will then move in for Tuesday with a few flurries lingering. Highs will only make it into the 20s for most areas.

That same arctic air will see a reenforcing shot of high pressure moving southward out of Canada by later Wednesday into Thursday. Most models are now so strong with this northern branch of the jet stream that it basically squashes the storm rolling out of the southwestern states.

There is one model that is trying it’s best to keep the storm alive and it is the NAM. While it is certainly nothing major… but does bring a shot of snow in here from late Wednesday into early Thursday with the greatest concentration across our southern counties…

NAM Snowfall Forecast

Notice those huge totals just to our west that happen before the system gets ripped apart as it moves eastward toward our region. Well… we did ask a few days ago what new way mother nature would find to cause a big snow to miss us this winter. Maybe that’s the answer we were looking for! haha

Looking ahead toward next week we find a much warmer pattern taking control of the country. Temps should take off around here with a 60 possible. Given this is coming in the middle of February… I would imagine some spring fever would be breaking out. Word to the wise… some of us already have it.

Does that mean we are done with winter? Nope… I fully expect more snow chances into March, but the constant cold and snow threats we have had since late November are likely a thing of the past.

I will update the current snow threat coming up later today so be sure to check back. Have a great Monday and take care.
