Good afternoon, everyone. That big temp spike we talked about is underway with some areas hitting the low 70s ahead of a strong cold front. This front ushers in gusty winds and much colder air for the weekend as we wait on another system by Saturday night and Sunday.
As the front moves in this evening, winds may gust to 40mph across parts of central and eastern Kentucky. A few gusty showers and thunderstorms will also show up ahead of the front. Here are your radars…
Temps behind this on Saturday range from the mid 30s to mid 40s, depending on where you are. Low level clouds will hang around, too. Another system moves in quickly with rain increasing Saturday evening from southwest to northeast. A swath of snow is likely to show up on the northwestern edge of this, but most of that is north of the Ohio River. Still, a mix of rain and snow will be noted for some.
As colder air wraps in, some light snow will show up into Sunday with flurries into Sunday night. Here’s the NAM…
The future radar from the Hi Res NAM shows the snow chance a little farther south into northern Kentucky…
A clipper may graze the state on Tuesday, but most of the action is likely to stay just to our north and east.
The next storm system brings rain and snow in here for Thursday with the potential for some light snow behind this into Friday. The Canadian continues to have more of a wintry look into next weekend…
The EURO continues to show this system as another fence-rider…
All models not named the GFS are trending colder as they see the blocking setting up.
Ironically, the GFS Ensembles see the blocking very well and show this colder pattern really taking control into week two of the month…
Enjoy the rest of the first day of 2021 and take care.

Thanks Chris for the update. That Nam model really showing an impressive Snowstorm for parts of Indiana and Ohio. I wish that low pressure’s path was through the Tennessee Valley. Well maybe next time ?
Right now the Sun is shinning and humid with a temperature is 70 degrees F. Spring has Sprung for Central and Southern and Western Kentucky ? I hope not yet ! LOL, but it’s getting close.
I don’t know if there will be any Thunderstorms after while, but there may be some gusty winds with the cold front moving through the area as the forecast suggest.
Arctic Air continues to be lock up in Canada for the time being. We don’t want it to get too cold and frigid right and pay a high heating bill later.
The National Weather Service in Indianapolis is saying that it will be mostly rain for the southern third of the forecast area(where I live), but I’m guessing they will be wrong again.
The snow event during mid-December they said an inch or less for the entire forecast area and pretty much everywhere had over an inch and many areas north of me had 3-4”. I guess they only trust the GFS and ECMWF because they show rain with this system and showed next to no snow with the last one. And it looks like they are struggling to see dynamic cooling as per usual.
In the past weather forecasting was much more accurate. Only three day forecast were made with hand drawn weather maps. Forecast would read like this ” Heavy Snow warning in this region” or Light Snow developing tonight.”
Simpler and better times 1950’s and 1960’s.
