Good Monday, everyone. It’s the 4th straight day with snow flying for many of us across the Commonwealth as snow showers and squalls work through. This action is putting down light accumulations and causing slick travel early today. Today isn’t the end of it as another light snow maker rolls through here on Tuesday.
A few roads are a little slick this morning, so keep that in mind if you have to be out driving. The snow showers and squalls will decrease as the day wears on. Here are your radars to follow along…
The next system zips in here very quickly late tonight into Tuesday. This doesn’t have much moisture with it, but has a band of light snow across the northern half of the state and a bit of a mix in the south. That’s followed by a few snow showers and flurries into Wednesday…
The extended range continues to be a massive fight with conflicting teleconnections. So far, this fight has resulted in above normal snowfall on the winter across central and eastern Kentucky, but below normal across the west. I guess we can call that a push.
It’s obvious the brutally cold look from many of the models will not be working out this week. Still, we will see pressing cold keeping a storm track just to the south of us at the end of the week. The control run of the EURO Ensembles does have a lot of cold coming for the last week and change of the month…
Looking at the Extended GFS Ensembles through February 20th, we find what looks like a very active storm track with above normal precipitation around here…
The Control Run is even more extreme…
This active storm track in our region is actually a hallmark of a La Nina winter. Can we get a few of those to turn into big snow makers around here? We shall see, but those models think so…
I will have your normal updates later today. Have a good one and take care.
ok ill say it, forcast bust
i meant this with bust, so if we can run mouth on NWS then why cant we call out first alert weather since friday. the standards for FAWD needs to be explained to the masses.
Thanks Chris, A very difficult year for Weather Forecasting.
After next week, those chances for a Major Snowstorm for a three State area really Decrease.
No signs of the Cold and Snowy Winter in Europe and Asia letting up.
I Sure Hope we don’t have too early of a Spring and Plants Freeze in Mid- April. This would be the sixth year if it happens. If this happened this often while I was in the Nursery business it would have been a Short occupation.
La Nina Winters are a ” Snow Lovers Nightmare” in the Southeast.
Schroeder your are correct about the difficult winter to forecast, but isn’t every LaNina winter. I will def take what we are getting over cold and sunny still holding out hope for a “old skool”thumping. The cold in Europe is supposed to relax later this month so maybe it can pore this way instead. We still have the end of month all of Feb and half of March to go, we are WAY overdue and I will continue to be optimistic about it. And a hard freeze in the spring is def not what I want
The Weather Models just Can’t get it right. For instance, I read that one of the Weather models that are used in forecasting our Weather here in the Ohio Valley were forecasting Over 1000 inches of Snow in areas of the Eastern US. WOW !!!!!
Kind of makes you Wonder what the Future of Weather Forecasting will Be ?
Not much snow flew over the past few days, since above 32 air dominated. Seems the total would be an inch as a total, if not for the the warmer air. Good chances perhaps ahead, but seems we as usual are the fence. As long as no ice, OK with that.
Don’t think we are even on the fence anymore.Seems like warmer air keeps funneling more North over the years. Can’t imagine how much above normal we would be this month if not for the -NAO and -AO.EKY is probably about close to normal for snowfall but it’s melted before you can look at it.As for the last week of January, have my doubts.Models have not been kind the last day or so.Looked promising for a while but who knows. When systems keep getting kicked farther down the road we’re usually in trouble.lol
it was coming down pretty good here in pikeville last night around 11pm. woke up this morning to a light dusting. that is the most snow we got over the last few days. im hoping for an early spring but no freeze later into it. when i was younger i loved the cold and snow. part of me still longs for a good old fashioned whopper snow storm, but my heart is forever in spring & summer. i recall many times in february where we had 70+ degree days. those days make me happy 🙂
Hang on a little longer and you may be happy again..
The west can only hope
I have not check on Solar Activity, but that could be the reason for Six Mild Winters in a Row ?
Winters we have had back in the late 1970’s have moved back into Central Canada.
I also Heard and Read that Native Americans believe the Earth’s Tilt has Changed and the Sun’s Shadows are not in the same place as they were years ago. Interesting.
