Good Friday, folks. We’ve made it to the end of the week and we have a half and half weather weekend kicking off. The first part looks good, but the second part is when things get active. A strong low pressure will roll toward the state during this time and will bring a lot of rain with it. That may cause some issues as we kick off a very busy setup.
Before we get into that, let’s harken back to 5 years ago when a shutdown snowstorm was raging across the state: 2016 Snowstorm . That was the third major snowstorm within a year across Kentucky in what was one of the more extreme winter weather patterns in recorded history. Many seem to conveniently forget about this period when talking about how “it never snows around here”. 😜
The weather is much calmer out there today and that continues into Saturday, so get out and take advantage of it.
A strong storm system will then roll our way from late Sunday through early Tuesday and this will likely bring heavy rain to much of the state. Watch how the low moves right over us…
The potential for several inches of rain is there and this could cause some issues before all is said and done. The GFS has some big time totals…
Most of that falls Sunday night and Monday.
The Canadian is a little farther north…
That matches up well with the EURO placement, but amounts are a little lighter…
The Icon also has a swath of significant rainfall and is farthest south…
The next system follows that up by late Wednesday and Thursday of next week and has a better chance to produce winter weather…
This is a very active setup that’s likely to carry us through the rest of winter and into spring. Looking way down the road at the European Weeklies through the first week of March, we can see this active setup. Look at the above normal precipitation numbers…
The Control Run is even wetter…
This is a pattern that will likely threaten our region with heavy rains AND heavy snows during this time. The track of the low on individual systems will determine how that plays out.
Another update will come your way later today. Have a good one and take care.
I think 2016 was the last time I shoveled my driveway.
Remembering that Snowstorm in 2016, but I had to ask my Brother this morning, how much Snow did we get ? And he replied around 15 inches and we were Snow Bound and could not find anyone in Taylor County to clear our long rural driveway. We both went out and shoveled our way, but could not make it to the end. Fortunately, our Good Neighbor came to our rescue and said to us ” Boys throw down those Snow shovels, I have to clear my Daughter’s driveway and I’ll be back to clear your’s shortly.” He came back with his tractor and got the job done within the hour. Now that Folks is a Good Neighbor.
Thanks Chris for the update. We are beginning to enter the coldest period in our Winter Season and we are talking about Heavy Rains for the Ohio Valley.
The Winter to date has been a Bust, Duh ! With February being the month for Snowstorms in Kentucky and it’s been five years since our last Major Snowstorm here in Central Kentucky. One kind of Wonders if this Snow Drought will end next month or not ?
The Weather Forecasting this Winter has Been the least accurate as I have ever seen in my entire Lifetime in my opinion, and I take every Weather Forecast with a “Huge Grain of Salt” from this day going forward.
Those Weather Models presented this morning and every morning never Pan Out. I bet that the predicted Heavy Rains will “Dry up in a Dry Slot” and we could use the Rain here in Central Kentucky as we are now Abnormally Dry for the Year.
Who knows what Weather Type we will have this Spring ? Maybe we will find out on February Second. LOL
The weather is what it is. Before 2016, we went around 17 years without a big one and then had three big ones in less than a year. Now we have gone five years with even less than before that, but a lot of folks had a very nice white Christmas. As far as trends, our sense of time in meteorological history is but a itty-bitty blink in time. Just keep the ice away!
WOW ! Seventeen Years without a Major Snowstorm. I would consider that Snow Free ? Didn’t use to be that way as far as I can remember.
good model trends today so far, lets hope they keep trending south
If they do, it will be the exception not the norm.
