Good afternoon, everyone. Snow is getting ready to return later this evening and will really kick into high gear overnight into Monday. That’s when low pressure winds up to our east with rounds of snow, moderate to heavy at times, drop in from the north and northwest. This looks like a healthy total snowfall for much of the state.
The future radars from the NAM and Hi Res NAM show this whole setup very well…
Hi Res NAM from 7pm tonight through 7pm Tuesday…
On the above animation, you can see how the snow flexes on a couple of occasions, early Monday then again Monday evening and Monday night. You can also see a connection to Lake Michigan showing up on that late Tuesday. This would keep flurries and snow showers going into Wednesday and the NAM shows this well on this animation that goes through 7am Wednesday…
Here’s my NEW CALL FOR SNOWFALL through Tuesday morning…
Again, that’s through Tuesday morning and not just the first wave coming tonight and Monday. Now, there’s a chance for some areas to hit the over on those totals as the models tend to underestimate setups like this, especially in the east and southeast.
Speaking of the models, here are the latest runs…
Hi Res NAM…

The GFS looks too far east like it’s been with most snow systems this winter…
A Winter Weather Advisory is out for much of the region and there’s a chance the southeast hits Warning level snows, especially in the higher elevations.
The setup later in the week into next weekend continues to be one to watch as arctic air gets involved in the pattern around here. This could lead to a couple big winter weather events from next weekend into the following week…

I will drop by for another update later this evening, so check back. Until then, here are your radars to follow the change to snow in from the northwest…
Enjoy the final hours of the month and take care.
I hate the extreme cold but if that it what it takes to get a decent snowfall for the entire state, I think I am going to have to some compromising.
I’d like to order spring with a side of 65 and sunny hahaha
Here is a preliminary recap of the snowstorm that hit the Chicago Metro area this weekend. 9.5 inches fell at the NWS forecast office in Romeoville 35 miles SW of Chicago, and 6.8 inches fell at Chicago’s O’Hare Airport. http://weather.gov/lot/2021jan3031_snow
The snow compacted down considerably due to its heavy, wet nature. I measured 6 1/4 inches on my driveway in Plainfield before I shoveled, which makes this our biggest snow since February of 2018. I’m about 40 miles SW of Chicago.
The temperature was right around 30 degrees for the duration of the heavy snow last night and this morning. It’s 32 here now.
I hope it’s a dry cold and is short live and if there is any precipitation on the back side I hope it is Snow and not Freezing Rain.
I will not be able to cope with an Ice Storm.
I would have to leave.
A Winter Weather Advisory is out for my county late tonight for an inch of Snow. I hope we have something pleasant to look at tomorrow besides gloomy skies.
I checked the Ventusky Weather Site just now and the Arctic Air at the present is retreating into Siberia.
I’m almost sure that GFS model is completely wrong about an Arctic invasion next weekend.
We will probably have the same weather we had today Gloom.
Do not believe because our winter experts on the board have all said winter is over.
All models are showing chances for winter weather over the next couple of weeks and even the European model is showing extreme cold artic air coming down, not just the GFS. The MJO is showing signs of coming around to the colder regions and models always have a difficult time adjusting to that.
Honestly, what is the NWS in Wilmington waiting on for an advisory for their viewing/advisory area. It is 5:17pm and not even a special weather statement has been issued. I wonder how bad it will be before they do anything?
Yep, you almost have to use your own judgement to determine whether it is safe to drive.
Can’t depend on anyone anymore.
