Good afternoon, everybody. Our snow maker continues to work toward the and brings accumulating snows for many, with the main focus on areas of southern and southeastern Kentucky. This kicks off a crazy period of harsh winter weather showing up for the week ahead.
A Winter Weather Advisory is out for most of eastern and southeastern Kentucky through early Sunday.
I’m gonna keep the snow map I put out last night…
The midday forecast models are all similar to what I already have out, but the NAM is back to being a semi-BAM…
That’s a little overcooked for my taste, but the Hi Res NAM isn’t too far behind…
The GFS is more concentrated on the southeast…
EURO
You can see all the models do forecast some, at least, 4″ amounts, but vary on where to put the heaviest. That justifies the continuation of the Winter Storm THREAT for the southeast.
Let’s talk about the setup for the week ahead because it’s one I don’t like the looks of. An arctic front is dropping into the region and will then slow down right on top of us. Areas of low pressure work along the boundary, bringing ample amounts of moisture in here. Low-level arctic cold air in an overrunning setup is the prime way we produce ice in our region. This is an increasing signal on the models.
Here’s the GFS from Tuesday through Valentine’s Day…
The Canadian also shows this similar multi-day event…
The GFS continues to unleash brutal cold into our region behind this by Friday into the weekend. The latest run shows this for lows on 3 straight mornings…
Once again, we want no part of anything like that.
I will have another update early this evening, so check back. Until then, make it a good one and take care.
Yuck……!
So excited……I would settle for the NAM
Ewwwww……! 🙁 This isn’t looking particularly great for anyone, is it? Looks like I’ll be hitting the lunch meat/bread/Coke aisles when I go to the grocery tonight. Stocked up well on the TP, thanks/no thanks to Covid -lol! Last year when we moved into our new home, they predicted snow/ice, so I have plenty of (unopened!) ice melt for the deck and porches.
I know I’ve ran it into the ground before here/other places, but undoubtedly, KY is in the absolute WORST AREA EVER to get in on good SNOWSTORMS?! I live in Nelson Co./Bardstown, and this hole here…wow….if it does snow a lot, it’s a guarantee it’ll be 10+miles within us either side, and we end up with the ICE STORM! (I’m not counting 2009, guys…) Christmas week ’04 was perfect example. We had nothing but sleet and Frz.Rn. for 36 hrs. while everyone around us got almost a foot of snow. 🙁 Geez.
when we get a big snow it is big
Winter Weather Advisories are out for the Chicago Metro area until midnight tonight, as the latest area of snow approaches from the west. Since temperatures are only in the low teens here, this will be a light, fluffy snow. 2 to 3 inches of snow is forecast by the time the snow ends later tonight, with isolated higher totals.
The coldest temps of the season occurred this morning, with lows in the low single digits above zero. It’s really going to get cold after the snow ends tonight, as Wind Chill Advisories are in effect for all of Northern IL from midnight through 12 PM Sunday. Low temps will approach 10 below zero, with wind chills between 25 and 30 below zero!
Yet another snow system arrives Monday, with the potential for another 2-4 inches. Looking at the computer models, the potential exists for a significant snowstorm here later next week before a re-enforcing shot of bitter Arctic cold.
Getting a great workout with the snow shoveling, and the one time I had a chance to go in the forest preserve near me last week, it’s beautiful with all the snow and ice-covered lakes and ponds.
Hoping that you guys in Kentucky and surrounding areas can avoid a major ice storm next week and get snow instead!
It sounds beautiful in that near by Forest Reserve you speak of. When it Snowed heavy here back in 2016 the Snow on the trees were like an old fashion Christmas card picture.
Maybe we will get an inch of Snow tonight here in Central Kentucky, but with Chris’s Snowfall Map it doesn’t look like that’s going to happen.
Really afraid of the weather next week.
Welp, we have had an ice storm in KY for every decade that I searched until the 2010’s, so perhaps our luck could be out next week. Another kicker is the models generally tend to do a MUCH better job with ice instead of snow. Boo!
Yeah, you guys in central and northern KY may be in for a doozie….hope you don’t loose power with the coming cold
We will loose power because they didn’t learn anything from the horrific Ice Storm in 2009.
They had plenty of time to upgrade. I ask them why they haven’t bury the electric lines and the answer was ” it would be too expensive.” Money before lives in other words.”
buried
We can all thank the Southeast Ridge for stalling out the cold front and the very warm Gulf of Mexico if we get the Ice Storm next week.
Darn La Nina pattern !
I had a Nursery/Garden Center in South Central Indiana and Southwest Indiana for 40 years and we had many Severe Weather Events, but No power Failures in the dead of Winter which is dangerous.
In the Blizzard of 1978 we never lost power.
Bury your Electric and phone lines Kentucky !
Kentucky sits on top of limestone rock.
To bury cable & electric lines you have to use dynamite.
This is why you only see the majority of buried utility lines in new neighborhoods. No worries about damaging existing structure.a.
The parent material is Dolomite Limestone that forms various soil types throughout the state of Kentucky.
Electric lines are buried 5 feet below the ground. The limestone is a lot deeper. So, it could be achieved and would create jobs, which is very important now.
It would be cheaper in the long run for Utility Companies.
About the only good thing from the 18z GFS is the ice totals went down.Be interesting what models will be showing Monday.
