Super Bowl Sunday Starts Snowy For Some

Good Sunday to one and all. It’s Super Bowl Sunday in more ways that one as a swath of snow kicks off what’s likely to become a memorable weather week. The early day snow system is most prominent across the southeast, but the systems ahead look to become much more widespread in our region.

Let’s start with the early day snow and work ahead.  Accumulating snow is causing issues across areas of the south and southeast where some areas should pick up several inches. Farther north and west, much lighter amounts show up with some folks seeing nada. Here are your radars to follow the early day Super Bowl Sunday snows…

The overall setup for the week ahead of us continues to feature an arctic boundary slowing down on top of the region with several waves of low pressure rolling along the front. These are fairly hard to time but we may see a bigger storm system toward the end of the week.
The GFS  continues to produce a consistent overall signal for the week…
That’s rather ugly with rounds of a nasty mix and snow through our region.
The GFS continues to unleash the arctic beast behind that…
Those numbers are nearly 50 degrees colder than normal…
The model then brings additional winter weather makers in here into the following week…
The Canadian model has a similar look, but never brings the core of the brutal cold in here. Instead, it just keeps the boundary around with multiple winter weather systems…
We want the cold to win out or we want it to somehow be warm enough for rain. Anything else can get ugly.
#TeamSpring is now accepting members, btw. 😏
I will have updates later today, so check back. Make it a good one and take care.

Not a fan of the Canadian’s multi-day ice storm over our area.

    Snow update:
Picked up almost an inch of snow in 30 minutes here, have some very intense snow bands moving through right now.

It’s in the single digits below zero early this morning throughout the Chicago Metro Area, with wind chills between 15 and 20 below zero.
This is our first below zero temperature this winter, and the first time it’s been below zero since last Valentine’s Day (which was our only below zero temp last winter).

The area saw about four or five hours of light snow during the afternoon and early evening, but it didn’t accumulate much at all, only around one inch in most areas. It does add to our considerable snowpack though, with O’Hare Airport reporting a foot of snow on the ground. The next snow we get Monday will likely be more significant.

Those low temps the GFS is showing for late next week for Northern IL are absolutely crazy ridiculous! Chicago has never had a temp as cold as 20 below zero during the month of February, but the GFS is showing lows of between 26 and 28 below zero, which would threaten Chicago’s all-time low of 27 below zero. And yeah, that would be nearly 50 degrees below normal! I’m very skeptical that it’s going to get that cold.

    Happy Super Bowl Sunday, everyone!

Both model runs were not great.
If I had to choose I would go with the Canadian.
(less frigid) The truth is probably in between.

If we look objectively like grading tests for how well the models outlook big snow through the years the grade would be an F, but sadly probably close to and A with ice storms. Boo!

    • BubbaG

“an A” . See, I’m as bad as the models out-looking big snow. F!

im always on #teamspring #teamsummer. by the time i got to my late 30’s i began to dislike winter more and more. part of me likes a good ol’ snowstorm but if i had a choice, id choose year round warmth.

    • BubbaG

I prefer normal average temps for each season, since like the season changes (makes me appreciate spring & summer more). That said, no longer a big snow fan and like most folks- no fan of ice.

      • BubbaG

Well, if did not have to shovel I’d be a big snow fan. Given our record of big snow, makes the Cats seem tolerable this season…. Nah, Cats are worse.

        • BengalFan1

Bubba, I will come and personally shovel for you if we can get a big snow.!!!!
