Good Monday, everyone. We have a wild temperature ride taking place today as a front lifts back to the north. This kicks brings an increasing threat for showers and thunderstorms, but the system behind this may bring severe storms to parts of Kentucky by mid-week.
Let’s kick things off with your Monday forecast then roll forward. Temps will be a work in progress as the numbers climb from southwest to northeast through the evening hours. Areas of the southwestern part of the state may reach 70 at the same time far northern Kentucky stays in the upper 30s this afternoon. Check out this possible late day temp gradient…
Again, those numbers rise through tonight in the north, so highs for the day may happen just before midnight.
Showers and a few thunderstorms will also be noted, with the greatest heavy rain risk in the west. Here are your radars to follow along…
Tuesday looks like a pretty good day as temps spike back up to around 70 for many…
Those numbers should then spike into the 70s for Wednesday…
This is ahead of a potent storm system that has the chance to become a big severe weather maker from the lower Ohio Valley into the deep south as it rolls east. Cooler air with leftover showers follow it up…
Areas from far western Kentucky and south will have the greatest risk for severe storms out of this…
Here’s the current Wednesday Severe Weather Outlook from the Storm Prediction Center…
After the late week chill down, temps rebound quickly into the 60s for the weekend with some really nice weather. From there, 70s show back up early next week as we wait on the next storm to roll in…
Have a great Monday and take care.
You can just about bank on middle Tennessee and southward in Alabama and Mississippi sucking most if not all of the severe weather energy potential away from Kentucky here.
I wouldn’t be unhappy if that happened. 🙂
Well I don’t feel that happiness or unhappiness plays a part in anything meteorological. If severe weather happens, it happens. I’ve always found it mystifying people have accused me in the past of wanting severe weather to happen or being happy it happened just because I like chasing storms.
Storm Chasing is an important part of Meteorology Research. Higher education in Meteorological Science would be required for anyone seeking this most rewarding profession.
Storm chasing/spotting like any other activity unfortunately has seen its share of those who do it for purely financial reasons. Instead of it being about the science and public safety/awareness, they invest money in camera equipment and then computer equipment for video editing and turn around and sell it to the highest bidder. These are the kind of people that will continue chasing even if it means passing up the opportunity to help victims.
Unfortunately there are those who aren’t storm chasers and spotters for the science or for public safety. They do it for financial profit. They invest money in camera and video editing equipment and then sell their product to the highest bidder. They are the type of people that will pass up helping a victim if it meant continuing their chase for more footage.
Best news ever
After four days last week of temperatures in the 60s here in the Chicago area, most of the area is experiencing sleet, freezing rain and snow this afternoon along with a strong east wind gusting close to 40 MPH. In the SW suburbs, heavy sleet is occurring, as it’s bouncing off the windows. The snow and sleet has covered the ground with about half an inch or so. Winter Weather Advisories are in effect for another few hours, as precipitation should be ending soon.
This is our first frozen precipitation event in over three weeks. It’s been very dry in that time frame, with only around a tenth of an inch of rain during that time. With 47 inches of snow so far this season, it’s going to be a challenge to break 50 inches.
I think we have had the last of this Winter. I came in at 10 inches of Snow for the entire season. One inch of that fell on Christmas Eve. I’m hoping now that the Thunderstorm and Tornado season will be a no show and we just get showers off and on through the Summer months.
