Good Wednesday everyone and Happy Groundhog Day. Shadow or not… our furry little friend will be in a rather foul mood when he or she comes out of hibernation and feels the wicked winds howling outside. This is all in response to the massive winter storm that has crippled much of the country and we are only getting winds and crashing temps out of this bad boy. The next week will find us plenty busy tracking two more storms and a possible arctic outbreak.
The weather today is rather wild with gusty winds and cold air moving in. The cold front will be well to our east early this morning as the cold settles in. The temp swing behind this front is dramatic with most areas going through a 20 degree or better plunge in just a few hours. The winds early today can cause some problems as gusts of 40-50mph will be possible.
Track the winds and temps here…

Wind Chill
Much of the day will be filled with a mix of sun and clouds with the threat for a few snow showers or flurries at times. This does not look like a very big deal as most of the backlash snows will be to our north and our winds never really become northwesterly. Whatever is out there will show up here…
Thursday will be a cold day with highs in the 30s under partly sunny skies.
Our next storm system will be getting going across the Gulf of Mexico by Friday and will send clouds our way by the end of the day. This will not be a huge storm… but it should be able to produce a swath of accumulating snows across our region. A weak, lead low should work northward into the eastern Tennessee Valley by Friday night as a stronger low develops and works into the Carolinas early Saturday and then eventually into New England.
The weaker the lead low is… the better the chance most areas see all snow. The stronger this is… the higher the chance areas in the southeast see some light rain mixing in. The GFS precipitation type forecast shows this…
Areas that are all snow can pick up on a few inches of the white stuff and we will figure all that out as we see how this lead low looks. There is an outside shot this can become “threat” worthy if everything falls into place.
A weak system will then dive in here for Sunday with the chance for some light snow or flurries.
The look of the pattern early next week will find a major shot of arctic air crashing southward into the plains states. This happens as energy dives toward the base of the digging trough and is likely to cause a storm to form. The question becomes… do we see a full blown major storm or more of an arctic wave that forms along the front?
The latest GFS likes the arctic wave idea…
That would actually be a healthy snow event for the Ohio Valley, including much of our region.
The Canadian Model has been among the first to sniff out storms in the extended range this winter. It is skipping the arctic wave and going toward the bigger storm idea again for next week…
Regardless of an arctic wave or a bigger storm… most of the models agree on a heck of a shot of arctic air for much of the country coming in soon thereafter. The GFS looks cccccoooolllldddd…
As is usually the case with the GFS… take it with a grain of salt and instead use it as a sign we are going back into another very cold stretch for the next few weeks. ![]()
I will have more updates later today so check back. I leave you with a Groundhog Day public service announcement…
Take care.

Thanks Chris.
Ok, I for one am praying for snow next week. Let the snow Gods give us one good one for the year heck I will be happy thru nxt yr if we can get just one good snow…no ice please… thanks chris for all u do to keep us up to date
hi gang stranded in lowell indiana 1-2 feet on the ground here with insanse winds…sleeping in my car at a pilot gas station tonight pics and video to come!!!
I’ve been redesigning http://SpiderSavvy.com all night and all I’ve heard is the wind howling outside. Too bad I don’t have a wind turbine to capture all that energy!
Folks, I hate to be the source of bad news here but don’t expect snow this week or next.
Clarinet man’s forecast:
Tonight through the weekend cold a few flurries possible. Little or NO accumulation.
Next week expect chilly temperatures ….some rain showers… snow not likely…
Possible wintry percipitiation in the north KY.
It’s little windy here but I feel overall blessed. The severe weather south of me. The blizzards/ice storms north of me. I love snow but would pass on this one. Just talked to my friend in Chicago and they lost their power early in the evening and don’t have any heat source. Last I talked to them it was dropping into the 40’s in their house. She said they are having thundersnow there. That I would like to see. I hope we get one more good snow this season but not a blizzard.
Great pic from the movie. Thanks for the updates. Maybe the storm next week gives us something worth talking about.
Flurries in Elizabethtown. COld, 26 degrees, 11 wind chill. Brrrr…. ๐ luv it!
So who was it on this blog that kept saying we were in a warming trend and winter was over? ๐
Chris…Thanks for all you do…Love the PIC. Happy Groundhog Day to all. Will have a shot of Turkey a little later.
Just can’t get to excited over these next two little systems. Both have the potential for a little snow around here, but nothing major. I guess that will be a common theme since the largerst storm to roll across the country in more than a decade just missed us. Cold and windy and it is nice to know that it will stay cold for the forseeable future. THINK SNOW…
u kill BLUEGRASS BUBBA, U the guy who started him and shoulf be allowed to use it everyear/. todd borek was ajoke calling him bluegrass bubba.
im pissed of this morning.
Flurries are falling in Shelbyville. Trees and power lines are down in Louisville and a coal truck was overturned on 64 in Franklin County. Up to 3000 people were without power in Louisville this morning.
***********WOW**************
St Louis only had three inches of snow from this. Just west of them in Columbia MO, they had 17.5 inches. I’ll bet folks in St Louis who wanted a big snow are not very happy right now.
Ahhh. 17.5 inches. I remember it well in 1998 ๐
In the spirit of the day, for those of you who have Encore, Groundhog Day is being shown back-to-back-to-back all day, and through the evening.
GFS seems to be a little more bullish on the storm for Friday into Saturday, (it was until I wrote this anyway), and it looks like a couple to possibly a few inches may fall in central and western KY.
Next weeks storm is interesting, and i’m sure Chris will give more in-depth thoughts on that one later this afternoon.
Have a great (can’t say this often), Groundhog Day and Hump Day!
Amazing how dynamic this storm was. That is the difference between sleet all day, and staying in air cold enough for snow.
REALLY nice snow coming down in ETown!!
A nice surprise! It was my impression we wouldn’t be getting much if anything! ๐
Moderate snow in Bardstown and bitter cold.
wild weather …. i woke up this morning at 5am and it was 47 degrees in London, now 3 hrs later it is 30 and spitting snow …. welcome to KY
Having light snow showers in Northern Rowan County (Morehead) and Flemingsburg..winds very gusty, not sure what the temperature as my thermometer is “missing” ๐
Chris, you are soooo funny and good at what you do…Loved the pic. Which one is the groundhog…ha ha Also, I loved the movie too……
Down to 23 degrees in Elizabethtown- windchill 8! Still snowing, sticking, we have a light dusting but things are getting white! ๐
Cool Groundhog day info:
http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/special-reports/groundhog-day.php
He didn’t see his shadow today, but according to NOAA, it seems Punxutawney Phil hasn’t had a good track record.
Was it WXMan that said we would get our blizzard today–well, we are getting a nice KY blizzard on the Anderson/Mercer line right now.
25.5 degrees, moderate snow, accumulating on pavement and grass.
Nice snow squall here on 127 on the Anderson/Mercer Co. Line. Currently accumulated to a dusting. Still, nice to look at.
moderate/heavy snow here now! Wow! God is so good to me!
Spotty flurries on the commute from Harrodsburg to Nicholasville. Winds are fierce. Got blown around a lot. Also, there was some patchy ice where rain had pooled on the road.
Talk about snow dome, partly cloudy with plenty of sun here in Nichvegas. A few very light flurries every once in awhile.
Riddlesweather.com currently updating yippe!! Also, check out the pics out of Oklahoma they are posted on the Oklahoma tab of the site. Good snow chances in the forecast, maybe ๐
It just THUNDERED here!!!
We were hoping that snow on the radar would come down to KY early this morning on the chat, remember?
Looks like God heard us, LOL.
Thunder or Ft. Knox?
Extremely heavy snow flurries here in SW LEX ๐
U moved?
LOL, ok…so maybe I got a lil too excited, ๐
I think it was probably Ft Knox LOL
I’m such a dork!
Work.
Grass is almost white now.
Ok, sun is trying to come out now. Might be at the end of the fun. Got a really good dusting though! Luv it! ๐
Work.
I hear it too… low rumbles… I do believe it is Ft. Knox. I am in Spencer County.
NAM..trying to pull a DE-JA-VU…of last storm that hit ky…snow out west and east ky under the center of circulation, meaning temps..in the 40’s with light rain/drizzle…yuck…
12Z NAM is looking good for snowfall in central and parts of eeastern KY over the weekend. Total QPF output from 7 p.m. Fri to 1 p.m. Sat is .25″ – .50″. Still more than two days away though.
Here in central Indiana: the ice last night was not as bad as expected. Yesterday evening, it mainly fell as sleet then it turned to freezing rain as the dry slot moved through. Temps got just above freezing, and with the strong winds it actually blew a lot of the ice off of power lines and trees. Still plenty of trees and powerlines down, but things did not get quite as bad as many expected. That is a blessing!!
A lot of places got more sleet and/or ice than expected.
CB, agreed on the chances, but best case as usual will be ankle biters for most KY folks.
I respectfully decline from anymore ankle biters. Bring on Spring! ๐
More of chance for 33/32 pattern, so mix would be a part of the total for most of us.
We will probably get snow this weekend. This is the only weekend that I DON’T want snow so we will probably get it….
The question becomes… do we see a full blown major storm or more of an arctic wave that forms along the front?
most of the models agree on a heck of a shot of arctic air for much of the country coming in soon thereafter.
The key word being “thereafter”..Sounds like rain to me.Personally i hope it rains, tired of washing salt off of vehicles with these drive-by,no good for nothing, wimpy snow fluries.
I love snow and winter. For about two months. Now, I am about ready for some sunshine. My boyfriend and I took a road trip to Florida last weekend. Didnt get to post all the photos/videos yet but you can see some here http://helenbukulmez.com/2011/01/24/road-trip-to-florida-in-january-travel-through-seasons/. It was awesome! Sunshine, you cant get here soon enough.
pretty cool site here, with some pics from the midwest storm. Look at the MOUND of snow with the guy trying to shovel out!!

…………
LOOK OUT BELOW…better get a good snowshovel for the next several yrs..!!!
12Z GFS model doesn’t seem to thrilled about either storm.

I actually read a statistic once that somebody at the NWS put together about the groundhog’s accuracy, but I can’t find it now. It wasn’t good though…something like 20% I’m thinking.
Interesting site. I lack both time and cash or I would hav followed. Nothing in Kentucky but cold rain, wind and the desperate hope of the next storm that fizzles.
Minor accumulation for eastern ky. today?
Ah, yes… that wind is quite strong today. I am watching the weather closely for Saturday, for while I love snow, I have an event Saturday afternoon that I don’t want to have to cancel.
When is this crazy wind gonna ease up?
A good friend of mine lives in Kenosha, WI, which is the bullseye for this blizzard. They have close to 2 feet of snow, 50mph winds and drifts 10 to 15ft! Can you imagine what would happen if a storm like that hit us?
Be nice if he was right but he seems to have a tough enough time predicting tommorrows weather.
Interesting reading, of course it’ll be years before we know if his forecast is correct, sigh.
Strange weather it’s 34 in Pikeville wind howling snow flurries light no accumulation and sun shining at times.
Snow is coming down in Johnson County and the wind is crazy…..will there be any accumulation or will the recent temperature spike prevent any from sticking?

Thanks Mike. Trust me, we lacked both money and time, too. Traveled 16 hours starting on Friday evening and another 16 hours back on Sunday to be back 4:00 am on Monday. Sheesh! Crazy! But, we had to see some sunshine! ๐
