Good Sunday afternoon everyone. This next winter storm is massive and will impact much of the country with the city of Chicago likely being the epicenter of a crippling snowstorm with up to 2 feet in many places. This may take on blizzard conditions in some areas and would make for a heck of a storm chase for us snow lovers. Hmmm… it’s not THAT far away. ![]()
Take a look at the latest GFS Snow and ice maps to see how much of the country will be paralyzed by this storm…
This is the biggest storm or the winter for the good old U.S of A. You can see parts of far northern Kentucky getting in on some ice before the rain takes over.
Rain will be heavy at times for much of the state Tuesday into Tuesday night. Temps Wednesday will crash from west to east with a switch to light snow and snow showers.
This pattern for the next few weeks is loaded! We have another storm that will crank up Friday into Saturday and take a track farther south and east of the current one. Yet another storm should develop next week and take a track from the gulf up the east coast. All this happens as bitterly cold air invades much of the country.
Moral of the story… winter has a long way to go before calling it quits and the next 2 weeks can turn wicked!
Enjoy the rest of your Sunday and take care.

I give up. No, really! I GIVE UP! If it’s not going to the North, it’s going to the East, NEITHER of which, IMO, need it. Even the folks in OK expect ice with about 10″ snow on top. It’s so depressing, my Prozac has all but quit working. LOL!
Thanks Chris. You are the most accurate here.
upper 30’s in Nky and mid 60’s in Southern Ky??? what’s up with that??
My folks near Tulsa had a high of 85° yesterday-now under WSW for 1/2″ ice & up to 10″ snow after a bit of rain overnight tonight…50° now in Bardstown.
…just disgusting…I double dog dare winter to lay one on KY ( no ice, of course)
Thats enough to send us snow-lovers over the edge….and I have an interesting question for all of the blog people that feel like chiming in…..have we in East KY seen the worst of Winter 2011 so far or are there more storms to be seen? I know you don’t know for sure but I’m wondering about the odds of a really significant snow for all of us in EKY? Responses are appreciated 🙂
If i was a betting man i would say as far as frozen precip is concerned i would say we have seen the worst
Ok, me & BFF goin north. See ya’ll when we get back. 😀
I posted this under Chris’s last post, but I just wanted to put it up again. 35-40 inches of snow forecast around Chicago including lake effect snows from the next storm.
http://forums.accuweather.com/uploads/post-13697-1296409518.jpg
Middlesboro just hit 70 degrees! Very Nice Day out.
Still some chances if just looking forward, but our track record so far for most folks in Ky has been almost all bark and no bite. We could be in the top ten for snowiest winters, but look how many ankle biters to get there 😉
Still, this event would be a GOOD miss, considering even the best case scenario for a southern shift would mean a bi-anniversary ice storm as bad or worse than 2009.
ARGH! No… double argh. Look at all those 10-20 inch totals and consider that the whole area in that portion of the US has already gotten feet upon feet of snow THIS MONTH! It’s maddening >:X I need to move north just for one winter apparently. My cousin keeps sending photos from Boston of the drifts and plowed piles by her home — 15 feet high, and it’s just… argh. All most of us are asking for is a good snow. Just 10-12 inches, it’s not like we’re asking for something extreme. I’m sure the north would be more than happy to share!
Come on spring! Kentucky has become the land of near misses and always looking forward to the next system. Ahhh the dark side feels so good! Long live the DOME!
our neighbor is in Chicago visiting his mom while she had surgery. He is planning on coming back here Wed. I would say he may not make it back to KY for a little while. LOL Was hoping for some snow out of this storm we shall see. Dont want the ice for anyone! And dont want all of the cold rain. But we cant change the weather we take what we get. Hope everyone has had a good day. Our temps hit 45 deg today.
Thats what I am guessing as well. Oh well, we’ve had our share of snow this year so I can’t complain…..hmmmm, maybe we could squeeze one of the early spring snows in this year….just sayin lol 🙂
Folks, start preparing yourselves for the inevitable. This winter, despite all of the cold air, has not produced a major storm for the region. We’ve gotten nothing but glancing blows while the east coast has seen storm after storm.
There’s a reason we don’t see a lot of snow around here. We’re in a bad spot. Chicago hasn’t had much, but one storm is going to bring them more than 2 feet. Could you ever imagine one storm lining up for us like that. Of course not.
I don’t doubt Chris that the pattern is loaded for the next few weeks, but it’s been loaded all year and to no avail here. Sure, eastern KY has done well, but that’s due to upsloping. The rest of the state has just been hit with glancing shots. I’m not sure the grass at my house has been covered yet this year.
I’m waving the white flag.
From the NWS in Chicago:
…MAJOR WINTER STORM TO IMPACT THE REGION TUESDAY INTO WEDNESDAY…
.THE FIRST PHASE OF THE UPCOMING WINTER STORM WILL BEGIN MONDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH EARLY TUESDAY MORNING FOR NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND
NORTHWEST INDIANA. SNOWFALL TOTALS FROM THE FIRST PHASE APPEARS TO
BE BETWEEN 2 AND 4 INCHES ACROSS NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA. THE FOCUS TURNS TOWARDS THE LARGER EVENT THAT PUSHES INTO
THE REGION TUESDAY AFTERNOON AND WILL PERSIST THROUGH WEDNESDAY.
A DEVELOPING AREA OF LOW PRESSURE IS EXPECTED TO SLIDE EAST OF THE
ROCKIES INTO EASTERN TEXAS MONDAY NIGHT AND RAPIDLY STRENGTHEN AS
IT SLIDES NORTH TUESDAY. THE PRECISE TRACK OF THE LOW CONTINUES TO
WOBBLE WITH EACH NEW MODEL RUN…HOWEVER RELATIVE CONSISTENCY OF A
TRACK FROM CENTRAL ARKANSAS NORTH TO CENTRAL INDIANA BY WEDNESDAY
MORNING LOOKS TO BE THE MOST PROBABLE TRACK. THIS WOULD PLACE THE
AXIS OF THE HEAVIEST SNOWFALL TO THE NORTHWEST OF THE TRACK OF THE
LOW PRESSURE…OR ACROSS MUCH OF NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND NORTHWEST
INDIANA.
AS THE LOW PRESSURE CONTINUES TO SLIDE NORTH AND STRENGTHEN…NORTHEAST
WINDS OF 20 TO 30 MPH ARE EXPECTED TO DEVELOP AND BRING A FLOW OF
COLD AIR ACROSS LAKE MICHIGAN AIDING IN THE GENERATION OF LAKE
EFFECT SNOW TUESDAY EVENING. WINDS WILL CONTINUE TO RAMP UP WITH
SUSTAINED WINDS TUESDAY EVENING BETWEEN 25 AND 35 MPH WITH GUSTS
UP TO 40 MPH POSSIBLE. NORTHEAST WINDS THEN CONTINUE TO STRENGTHEN
TUESDAY NIGHT INTO EARLY MORNING WEDNESDAY WITH GUSTS UP TO 45 MPH
POSSIBLE. THIS IN COMBINATION WITH THE FALLING SNOWFALL MAY CREATE
BLIZZARD CONDITIONS AND WHITE OUT CONDITIONS. AS THE LOW PRESSURE
CONTINUES TO LIFT NORTH INTO CENTRAL INDIANA WEDNESDAY
MORNING…WINDS WILL BEGIN TO TURN NORTHERLY AND BRING THE LAKE
ENHANCED SNOWFALL TO NORTHWEST INDIANA.
BY LATER WEDNESDAY THE SNOW FROM THE DEPARTING WINTER STORM WILL
BE WINDING DOWN ACROSS THE AREA BUT A BAND OF SIGNIFICANT LAKE
EFFECT SNOW IS EXPECTED IN NORTHWEST INDIANA WHERE SEVERAL
ADDITIONAL INCHES OF SNOW ARE POSSIBLE BEFORE THE LAKE EFFECT
SHIFTS FURTHER OFF TO THE EAST INTO SOUTHWESTERN LOWER MICHIGAN
AND NORTH CENTRAL INDIANA.
BETWEEN THE INITIAL LIGHTER SNOW MONDAY INTO TUESDAY MORNING…
THE HEAVY SNOWFALL FROM THE MAJOR WINTER STORM DURING TUESDAY
AFTERNOON THROUGH WEDNESDAY MORNING…AND THE INCREASINGLY INTENSE
LAKE EFFECT SNOW DEVELOPING DURING WEDNESDAY…IN EXCESS OF A FOOT
AND A HALF OR MORE OF SNOW WILL NOT BE UNCOMMON OVER MUCH OF
NORTHERN ILLINOIS AND FAR NORTHWEST INDIANA. SNOWFALL RATES UP TO
3 INCHES PER HOUR WILL BE PROBABLE AT THE HEIGHT OF THE STORM
TUESDAY NIGHT.
THE STORM SYSTEM WILL BE AFFECTING A LARGE PORTION OF THE
SOUTHERN GREAT LAKES…MIDWEST AND OHIO VALLEY REGIONS. ANYONE
WITH TRAVEL PLANS TUESDAY AND WEDNESDAY…INCLUDING THOSE
TRAVELING THROUGH CHICAGO OHARE AND MIDWAY AIRPORTS…SHOULD
CONTINUE TO MONITOR LATER FORECASTS REGARDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF
THIS WINTER STORM..
Well, let me give my perspective from Central KY. I think we all know this part of the Ohio Valley is no place for lovers of snow. I’ve lived here long enough that I no longer get upset when the snow misses us. I personally am leaning towards the idea that the worst of the cold may be behind us, but we may still get surprised by a system or two (“surprised” meaning a 3-4″ snow. I would never predict a foot, much less 6-8″. No upslope here.)
If storms must come our way, let them be rain. I’m ready for Spring.
seriously at this point just screw it. This storm is huge and were going to get rain. bull crap. We get all the 2-4 inch snows and this monster forms and we get screwed. Kentucky is a horrible place to live it you want to get big snows. We are in a bad location. My enthusiasm for this winter and keeping up with this blog is gone.
Sigh, if only it was us.
Winter Storm Watch Monday night and Tuesday for far northern Kentucky. This includes the Covington area. looks like its pushing a little farther south…..
wecan only hope…….
I know nothing about the weather so far as being able to predict things, but I do know that every good storm I can really remember in my 28 years of life (so in the past 18 years or so) occured somewhere between the end of January and early March — including the smaller storm in ’08 that dropped a foot on L-ville and 6-7 inches on Lexington. I also seem to remember an inch or so in April a couple years back (because I went to Keenland that day!) and then by a couple days later it was HOT… and I mean bathing suit hot… lol.
It’s Kentucky… ya never know!
why everytime i try to post does it go to moderation?????????
I would just once like to see a snowfall of 3 in. per hour for a several hour period. Thats what they are expecting near the Chicago area.
Winter Storm Watch Monday night and Tuesday for far northern Kentucky. This includes the Covington area. Looks to me like the models are pushing farther south and a little colder with this storm i maybe wrong………
I’m tired of being dodge by the snowstorms, I am likely heading to Chicago to witness the worst snowstorm they’ve seen in awhile!
Send a copy of this to Tom Skilling at WGN. After reading a few of his facebook posts today this map looks doctored.
Just look at the snow dome take over when the cold air gets here. You can see it right over our area. http://www.nco.ncep.noaa.gov/pmb/nwprod/analysis/namer/nam/18/images/nam_pcp_072m.gif
i dont think i work wednesday and i got the cash so i am doin 74 to indy then up 65 to northern indiana, gonna experience this since its likely a once in a decade storm. i am sure here in nky we’ll get several more 3” snows b4 winters end but dangit this thing is massive?
Any chance of this thing still shifting a little to the south? I know that would cause ice, but I would like the heads up if that possibility is still alive.
Whoever coined the phrase ‘always a bridesmaid never a bride’ must have been a snow lover living in central kentucky
As always, thanks for the updates Chris!
It figures, the monster of the year rears it’s ugly head and it’s to far north 🙁
With all the Ice involved, I’m kind of glad….I wouldn’t wish an ice storm on anyone.
Let’s hope the next couple weeks activity brings us all a nice closer for the Winter and we can get our snow fix!
If we don’t get something by the 3rd week in February or so, I’d guess that our chances for a big snow are long gone.
I bet that we won’t miss any school this week. I have bus duty!
yea rest of our winter will be RAIN with ending as snow at end, nothing majior.
Isn’t it amazing that this is pretty set in stone for the folks expecting this snow storm TUESDAY………..If the tables were turned and the potential for this storm was here, there would be so much uncertainty until the storm was actually happening, and even then, who knows…..It’s almost as if with this storm, they know exactly where the low is going to go, two days from now…
I’m telling mom…. Give it back or else…. (Stomping my feet)
Pick me up on the way…I will have my snow gear packed…:)
I share everyone’s dismay at missing the BIG ONE. To make matters worse, I’m guessing the next two storms alluded to by Chris will miss KY to the SOUTH. Wow! This stinks.
i am heading up for this and will email cb some pics! next stop south bend indiana baby!!!!
I So agree with you
Ditto, especially since Greenup Co. is bordering on the ice/rain part of the map.
Riddlesweather.com just posted an update…Check it out! Hey chris you up for a trip to chicago 😉
“Winter has a long way to go before calling it quits and the next 2 weeks can turn wicked!”
It could, but there is a growing consensus in some of the ensembles suggesting that the pattern will revert to a Midwest storm strack set up as the SE ridge sets up. Only time will tell, but the GFS has been forecasting Arctic blasts for the last month…that has verified at all in our part of the country.
Nice! I’ll be heading to the southside of Chicago for the duration of the storm!
Dang! Some of you folks even depress Darth Bubba…. Is there a force even darker?……
The Dark Force cult of the Kentucky Dome Dwellers! YIKES!
Darth has to turn it up a notch just to keep up 😉
Lets all get excited about the next event. The only way we are going to receive a major snow will be from a freakish spring storm. I would be surprise if anything strong forms in Feb.
It really can’t be denied that there is some kind of Dome covering us here when it comes to any significant snow. Still I am glad for a cold rain rather than ice. This storm is being talked up as one that people who experience it as one that will be remembered for a lifetime. Here it will be remembered (if at all) as just another couple of rainy winter days. Somebody wake me up when spring has sprung – we’ve had our chances, all squandered, and it really looks like a major snow will not be happening here again anytime soon – just add another year to our 13 year streak. Our theme song for this year is hereby “What Might Have Been” by Little Texas. Heck it may just as well be our theme for any given winter…
Chris,
I’m on disability and can’t work so if you want to go let me know and we’ll take my 4 wheel drive and head out. Goodness knows I don’t have anything pressing to do.
Should have said that the GFS has not verified at all in our part of the country.
UGHH… I feel like Charlie Brown when Lucy picks up the football just as he starts to kick it! Why, why, why can’t we get in on a big one? Why do we know this far out too that this is going exactly where the models say? We always debate on the exact path until at least 12-ish hours before. Am I just desperate (I agree I don’t want ice)? So close, but yet so far once again I suppose.
Yeah, it seems that predicting snow is a pretty exact science anywhere but here. In Chicago, they are predicting up to 2 feet of snow, three days form now, and give or take an inch or two, that’s what they are going to get. Here, the prediction could be 100% chance of X amount of snow three HOURS from now, and there’d still be at least a 50/50 chance, if not worse odds that it wouldn’t pan out…still never ceases to amaze me!
You people are all nuts……
It’s looking more and more like a rain event for the Bluegrass, but I’m not complaining because an ice storm is NOT something to hope for in this case. I’m ready for spring storm season personally.
that’s what she said
Man Mr. Wind is really cranking here in Versailles!!
Looks life Frankfort is in the ice? Ew, how much??? EW, YUK! Hate ice! Was without power for 10 dang days last time. Guess my friends in Chicago are going to have a fun week!
Update, Update,
The newest forecast is out!!!!!!!!!
Tuesday 60 degrees and rain chances 20%
Wednesday 54 degrees and partly sunny
Thursday 45 degrees and sunny
Get outside and have fun
That green color is the color we’ve seen all winter with our snow storms which pretty much indicates not much at all… lol.
No really though, it’s the .0-.1 inch range… so not a lot at all. Not even as much ice as we got in the snow/ice “minor event” before Christmas and that one didn’t really create any issues (other than traffic and well, someone could spit on the ground here in Lexington and it would throw the drivers off) so nothing new there.
in Lexington… forecast 39 for Wednesday, 29 for Thursday (and those are the highs). Where are you? And of course it lists us as expecting 2+ inches of rain. Yeah… if that temperature would just drop so that would be 2+ inches of liquid precipiation worth of SNOW! yeah right.
Yes it is. Snow not looking good for us.
look how much trouble this storm will cause, and some people will probably lose their lives in this.
Why would you want a storm like this????
Rachel, I am in Lexington also……
I thought if I made a forecast and just the opposite happened it was worth a try.
Hey, I was at Churchill Downs derby week one year and it snowed!!!!!!!!!!
not kidding on this..
I think I’m gonna have to change my screen name…:( I mean REALLY? Storms to the EAST, Storms to the WEST, Storms to the South and NORTH…how can that be?? I don’t want an ice storm but I sure want that Snowfall! and 3 inches of snow per hour..I thought for sure since this was forecasted to miss us, it might actually hit us since all the ones forecast to hit us, actually miss us! I’m not ready to throw the towel in just yet…BUT…it’s in my pitchin hand..so frustrating!
Lol — I thought maybe you were somewhere in SE Kentucky and that was the actual forecast… after today’s temp. differential between the two that wouldn’t have surprised me at all!
And I remember that! I did the AVOL walk downtown on May 1st one year several years back and it snowed. Not for long, but snow none the less!
yes
you need to practice pitching a more optimistic approach….lol
Wed. 24 degrees and a lot of snow
I wonder when the flood watches and warnings will start being posted..I mean 2 inches of rain in that short of time period, with already saturated/wet ground…could cause some major problems for a lot folks..that’s not good..snow is good 🙂
HAHA…Ya think?? Maybe..now what are you saying about wednesday and lot of snow..I didn’t see that in any forecast?? Did I optimistic eyes/outlook miss that?? haha
Not me! I will take the bet and think we will have a 6 plus inch snow event in Central KY yet before the winter is over!
Winter Warlock
1989 was the year it snowed.
I Want To Create A Law That Would Require All Schools In The U.S. To Teach Weather Terms In Schools. Because It Is Very Inportant It Can Even Save Your Life!!!!!! The Local Meteorologist’s Need To Stress This!!!
That has got to be some kind of record for Advisorys, Watches, and Warnings. That one huge area.
http://www.weather.gov/
Well folks, lets just look forward to the weekend and what could be a snowstorm? Wait, have I heard this before? haha
I emailed WGN about the map attached to this post, and it is/was legit at the time. It was a computer generated map for the Chicago area.
It looks like over half the country!!!!
Im gunna go on ahead and crawl in a hole, and cry. hahah just kidding.. kindA? LOL
And your point is?
Believe me, there’s plenty of salt in my wounds.
That’s okay! As the commercial sings, “I love the rain”.
All we ask for in ky is a couple of snows 8 to 12 inches every winter ..an yet we are denied year after year…Why OH gods of the southern and northern snow makers have you denied us of our thirst…Why have you brought this wrath upon us…What sacrificial lamb can we give you to appease our misery..Can we give you the evil one from the dark side who goes by the name BubbaG to do as you please..Why do we have to die a thousand deaths every winter..Why,,,Why,,,,Why…
OMG. I am soooo sick of ky winters. They suck horribly. Just cold enough to make it uncomfortable all winter long, but not cold enough to get any good snows. I am seriously thinking of moving to get away from this pathetic weather. If I am going to have to bve cold, I want a big snow on the ground to go with it. KY=zero. One big chance after another, but never any capitalization.
WHAT STORM!??!???!!…sunshine and low 70’s in southern ky..today…B)
Sean, I and many others have felt just like you but we keep coming back. It’s an addiction.
Three words.”I GIVE UP”..
I don’t want anyone to have to go through an ice storm & 2’+ is a little much snow for me, but really is it to much to ask for more than 2-4″??? This winter storm is going to be in the record books & of course, we are left out, again! This really is depressing. I know everybody jokes about their being a snow dome, but something has to be going on. Big snows ALL around us, yet we couldn’t buy a big snow. What gives?? How come if a big snow looks like it’s going to hit us, were guessing right up to the last minute what it’s going to do, yet this monster was predicted 3 days out & know exactly where it’s gonna go & nothing changes? I’m just so sick of seeing storm after storm pass us up. Seems like every time we have all the ingredients for a major storm, we still end up with just the usual 2-4″. Really disheartening. BTW, love this blog & appreciate everyone’s opinion on here! Keep up the good work guys & Chris, your the best weather guy around!
I agree, this breaks my heart. I don’t want to see any lose of life or people lose their power, I just wish we could get snow. Why is it so much to ask for more then 2-4″ of backlash snows??? Really, something’s going on in Kentucky.Everytime were in the game for one, it ALWAYS end’s up passing us up. I really think people should start looking into what’s going on & see how all these snowstorms keep missing us. I don’t get it! BTW, read the blog everyday & enjoy everyone’s opinion on here =-) Keep up the good work guys & Chris, your the BEST weather dude around!
I keep getting sent to moderation, so I’ll try it this way…I agree 100% with you! Something has to be going on in Kentucjy for all these snowstorms to keep missing us everytime!
Sorry for the typo, meant to say *Kentucky*
Chris, at some point and time you have to address the blog and the central kentucky dome phenomenon. It’s not our imagination. Yes, we got snow snow this year but the big one continues to evade your old stomping grounds. North,East, South have all gotten their share of multi inch snows. We get ankle biters, to quote our fearless leader of the dome, Darth Bubba. give us your thoughts on this. Meanwhile I’m going to Nashville to find a country singer who can write a heartbreak song about Central Kentucky always being 7 days away from the big one.
00z GFS just went WACKO!!! lol. but probably not right!
This weekend snowstorm will be the same as what we have seen all winter a miss I’m am so sick of this winter I’m ready for spring all this mud does is get my boots dirty……
WACKO how????
I keep loggin on every now and then to see if anything has changed..you know how it ALWAYS changes for Kentucky..haha..yeah, it’s hard to believe like half the U.S. has some major watches and warnings and here we sit..”watching” …YEAH! haha. Gawd, i really do need to change my screen name..I’ve gone to “dark side” ..well almost…
nobody wants to see anyone lose there lives.its just the frusrtation year after year after year that we basically get nothing in ky..Coupled with that and the models teasing us until 12 hrs before you actually know whats going to happen is really a strain on the mind. Then to top it off you see 2 feet of snow for your next door neighbor, its just frustating.
I think you are making this up.
Hey, just wanted to say I really enjoy your site, great site…very informative and enjoyable..keep up the great work! 🙂
This pattern for the next few weeks is loaded! We have another storm that will crank up Friday into Saturday and take a track farther south and east of the current one. Yet another storm should develop next week and take a track from the gulf up the east coast. All this happens as bitterly cold air invades much of the country.
Ugh Chris,Think you forget to mention everywhere but ‘KY’.
00z GFS seems pretty consistent with previous model runs on track and QPF. I can’t see thermal profiles but I don’t see anything surprising personally.
What makes you think that whatever we want or wish in any way affects where or how the weather will develop. Just because we wish for a storm or not does not mean we’re wanting or making it happen for anyone.
Misery, I feel your pain. Everywhere but Kentucky is 100% correct.
test
This is the first time in a while ive been able to post on here lol, but maybe this weekends system will give us some snow, but if it dont theres still plenty of winter left and the bigest snow i can remeber in eastern ky, was in march of 1993, we still got time to get a old school storm here
Yeah this thing is massive! I’m heading up there Tuesday AM straight shot up I-64 and hoping for a new record for Chicago!
Yeah I’m heading up there Tuesday Morning straight shot up I-65, hoping for a record breaker in Chicago!
