Good Tuesday afternoon everyone. Our winter storm is moving in a bit quicker than I thought as light rain is breaking out across much of southern and western Kentucky. In the overall scheme of things… I have no significant changes to my line of thinking. I’m not sure if thats a good or bad thing.

As of early this afternoon… a Winter Storm Watch is out for much of central and eastern Kentucky tonight and Wednesday…

Some thoughts…

– Light rain will continue to move in across much of the region into the evening hours. Rain will begin to transition to heavy, wet snow across western Kentucky during the evening.

– As the storm to our south begins to deepen and work to our east… dynamic cooling will begin to kick in and that is what will lead to the switch to snow. Storms like these end up creating their own cold air on the north and northwest side of the track.

– The switch to snow will work from southwest to northeast later tonight into early Wednesday. Across southeastern Kentucky… the transition will also take place from top down. That simply means it will start snowing in the highest elevations with a fairly quick drop in the snow level Wednesday morning.

– The heaviest snow will fall in western Kentucky this evening into the wee hours of the morning. Central Kentucky and south central Ky will see the heaviest period of snow late night and Wednesday morning. Eastern and southeastern Kentucky will see the heaviest snows Wednesday morning and early afternoon.

– Temps will hover around freezing for this entire event meaning this will be a VERY wet snow. Areas that pick up on 5″ or more will be fair game to see some tree and power issues arise.

– I see the NWS in Jackson is getting “cold feet” (pun intended ). My suggestion is don’t… there should be a a nice swath of 4″ or more of snow through their forecast area on Wednesday.

With all that said… here is the updated snow forecast…

I left the northern areas a bit more open ended as pinpointing exactly where the sharp cutoff to the heaviest round of snow will be is impossible. There is likely to be a VERY sharp cutoff on the northern and northwestern edge of the snow. If you are a snow lover… I hope that cutoff isn’t across your neighbor’s yard.

I will get some tracking tools on later today… for now, you can follow the light rain into town…

More updates as needed so check back. Take care.
