Good Tuesday to one and all. It’s a whole new ballgame when it comes to the weather pattern across Kentucky as a very active and colder than normal fall pattern settles in. From frost tonight, to a major storm system later this week, to a winter pattern for early November… We have a lot to talk about.
Let’s start out with what’s happening out there today. Low clouds and isolated showers start the day across areas of central and eastern Kentucky. Here are your radars to follow this out of the state…

Skies become partly cloudy this afternoon with temps mainly 50-55.
This sets the stage for a very cold night ahead for areas with clear skies. Temps can drop to freezing or below for areas with a clear sky, mainly in central and eastern Kentucky. For those with clouds, temps will be held up several degrees. Here are the lows from the NAM fam…
Hi Res NAM
NAM
This brings us to our monster of a storm in the days leading up to Halloween. Here’s a preview of what to expect:
- This is a Wednesday night through Saturday night impact for our region.
- Rounds of rain will be likely during this time with a general 1″-2″ for many, but not all.
- Winds will make for a blustery period with gusts that may reach up to 30mph.
- Temps will be held way down for highs and may stay in the upper 40s to low 50s Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
- Most of this system looks to move away just in time for Halloween on Sunday.
The models continue to be very consistent in how they are handling this storm, but some of the new runs are slower with the departure time early Halloween…

A colder than normal setup continues to look likely in November and this pattern shows up well on the Canadian Ensembles…
I will have another update later today. Make it a good one and take care.

Mike, while you were having the heavy Autumn rains we were experiencing a “blow Torch” and the temperature was well into the seventies. Today it has really cooled off into the low fifties under heavy cloud cover. Tomorrow I hope the Sunshine returns, but I think the wind will pick back up before the next front arrives later this week.
The outlook for the coming Winter is no surprise. I saw this “double dip” La Nina coming on the ENSO blog back in early September.
As it stands now I’m prepared for a milder and wet Winter here in Central Kentucky. UGH !
