Good afternoon everyone. Lost in all the fuss about the potential winter storm for early next week was the impressive cold temps from this morning. Readings went well below zero in many locations. Here is a look at some of the arctic cold temps…
Cynthiana: -9
Covington: -8
Owenton: -7
Maysville: -5
Vanceburg: -5
Frankfort: -4
Carrollton: -4
Lexington: -2
Shelbyville: -1
Morehead: -1
Shepherdsville: -1
Harrodsburg: 1
Winchester: 1
Remember those computer model maps from a few weeks ago showing sub zero temps around here for mid January? Not too bad!
Our Winter Storm Threat continues for Tuesday and Wednesday of next week. It’s all about the track of the low in terms of the impact this storm will have on us. The GFS Ensembles did trend westward this afternoon. Keep in mind this is an “average” of different runs, so things get smoothed out…
Earlier runs of the Ensembles were very much wide right. ![]()
Regardless of this storm… the upcoming pattern looks nothing short of amazing for bitter cold and snow chances all the way through February.
Full update coming your way later tonight. Take care.

About my last post…You’re right…..I remember that now. I can’t believe I forgot that.
Models trending toward yet another Kroger-sponsored 1-3 inch snow event for Central KY. Hey!! Old Man Winter…go hard, or go home!!
Does anyone know when the next models come in!!!!!!!
Rolo,
Do you still think us southeastern counties will get a big snow from the maps this evening? What is your input on this? I hope this is the one I would like for Clay to be right in the middle for heavy snow.
I’m in Northern Jessamine. I don’t know what the low temperature was, but I do know that it was -1 when I checked this morning around 6:30am.
Well phooey!!! I wanted frankfort in on this one too….maybe it will happen sometime soon. I hate missing school for 1-3 inches…..
yes…do not forget the Beer!..lol
The NWS out of Louisville must be stumped on this next storm! They have no comments about the upcoming storm. Maybe they have all went on vacation? Chris does most of their work for them anyway :)!!!!!
NAM model is coming out right now….GFS comes out around 11:30 or so…..EURO around 2AM or 2:30
GFS starts running at around 10:30 via noaa.gov
CB is shrewd 🙂 Get the obvious east average result of the models off our minds and talk about the cold temps (was real cold, so warranted).
Anybody else notice the models are a lot more east than they were yesterday, or just my poor map reading?
I think we know where this system is probably heading. At least the bright side is no cabin fever 🙂
Revised KY big snow chances:
Eastern = 40% (more far east)
Middle Eastern = 20%
Central = 10%
Would be nice to see the average of the models trend west to boost these percent chances back up 🙂
Rolo, ive always wondered is rolo your real name?
It’s going east….nothing to see here folks move along. 🙂
WLKY posted that cky will not get much if anything from this storm. They say a dusting at best. 🙁 Is it really true? Any thoughts?
His real name is Bolo. You know, the dude in Enter the Dragon that Bruce Lees beats to to the ground and then jumps on his chest to finish him off. Keeeeyaaaah! 🙂
I guess you have to be a Bruce Lee fan to get that one. Woooochaaa! 🙂
Mine only recorded +4 this morning. Coldest all winter has been +2 twice in December.
Jake
Baby-stating the obvious here-it’s cold out there!
New NAM is a big hit for entire state!!

3-5″ lou.
5-8″ lex.
East ky over a foot!
Are you saying that WLKY means a BIG dusting?
I want a foot in Richmond.lol. I assume we are in the 5-8 with Lex.
I want a foot in Richmond.lol. I assume we are in the 5-8 with Lex?
It must be awesome, CB just did a second tweet about it.
Welcome back NAM!!! 1.25-1.50 precip for Eastern KY!!!
How do I see this link. It is disabled when we click it.
Looks like TN gets slammed
00 Nam Rocks!
I am ecstatic.
I’ll take it!… now if we could just wiggle a smidge more west for some comfort room on that border area. lol…
Just copy and paste that NAM link in a new tab and you’ll see the output.
Is it too early to be excited? I can barely contain myself!! 😀
technically the model shows mid to upper 30’s and rain but it’s clear the model is underdoing dynamical cooling things start as rain but quickly change to snow.
would be nice to see other model support…when do those runs come in tonite?
hate to be the party pooper here but its one run :(, i still think london towards wise,va gets 4-5 inches but thats about all she writing for KY snowwise the Blacksburg/Roanoke,va areas are going to get the 1.5-2.0 qfp totals
As good as Days and GH was in the 80’s, this is better than any soap….I swear!
Lol!
With One Life To Live, I want as many big snowstorms as possible.
LOL that is the truth!
Can’t wait to see what Chris has to say later. HURRY UP!
Based on ????
I think the 00Z NAM looks awesome too. East of I 75… that’s where things may be really interesting by Tuesday.
I trust the nam like i trust my ex-wife,not gonna happen folks,,This thing started out to the east of us and thats where its gonna stay, don’t get your hope up only to be let down…You think chris would be talking about temps if there was gonna be a big storm,,,I don’t think so…Now where do i bye my ticket to the imperial bus train or whatever you call it and my bunk bed…Im ready to hop aboard and forget about winter…
CB NEVER tweets about a single model run.
I think he’s seeing something else, otherwise he wouldn’t mention it yet.
Just my opinion.
Gotcha! Thanks! Oh my….that looks good.
I agree with u!
gosh your such a debbie downer. get out of here dude if all your going to be is negative.
so funny……..the tone has been going down over the past 6 hours..and then wham..one model and spirt is back up for many…stop guessing.stop listening to other weatherdudes. stop trying to figure out your own forecast..and just listen to cb….
bubba…please child!
How about we move the track even further west to include all of Kentucky?
Here’s hoping it continues this westward movement!
this map is sorta just how i see things. my personal opinoin and view of the past 13 years or so this is how low pressure has formed and tracked from the southwestern gulf region. for now clearly only one of these tracks makes sense for now, but to think suddenly a new middle track would form is hard for me to believe.

Oh yea, forget to mention the stars are out,the ground is frozen, temperature’s will get down to 10 degrees tonight and the start of the work week will be gloomy as always as other’s enjoy the great big snowfall..Now who’s selling those ticket’s to Imperial land?
should said child please…just joshin with ya bubba..you r probably correct unfortuntaly..wish we could get a foot odds r we wont though..but hey lets dream
good job cats!!!!
this cracks me up, where u from ohio?
no sorry, Richmond will be in the 2-4 zone per usual. Just ask Bubba
How many times did New Orleans get hit with a hurricane before Katrina. History isn’t necessarily the key to the future.
I had a good feeling the NAM would do this….
CB Tweet..
“The new NAM shows more than a foot of snow southern/eastern ky. Up to 8″ central and 3-6” west. Not saying it’s right…
That is an EXCELLENT point!!
No debbie downer here,,,Wish it would snow 3 feet,,,Just stating the facts, all models had this storm going east and thats where its gonna stay..The truth is the low doesen’t develop until late monday..So who knows whats gonna happen until then..Everybody gets too worked up about a possible big winter storm 4 days out and a few runs of the models…Sunday night and early monday you will know the truth..
00z GFS still out to lunch…has similar track as NAM but entire state above freezing and no moisture. Hmm…i find that hard to buy. Waiting for Canadian to hopefully keep with the westward trend.
As The Nam Turns…so goes The SnowDays Of Our Lives.
(sorry, had to.)
😀
covington,ky park hills to be exact
Funny stuff! I love it! 🙂
Great work dude, u gave nice post to us. Thanks for spending the time to discuss this, I feel strongly about it and love learning more on this topic.
